Six Degrees: Vancouver Edition.

G’day Zoners, I hope you’ve all been enjoying the Winter Olympics. I for one have become obsessed with all things ice related – Speed Skating, Figure Skating, Curling and Ice Hockey. A great obsession to have smack bang in the middle of an Australian summer. I of course blame Stephen for my new found love of winter sports. For those of you able to tear yourselves away from all things ice and snow, Stephen’s friends have some exciting upcoming projects for you to check out.

Conan O’Brien

  • Exciting news for all Coco fans, courtesy of The New York Times:

Representatives of Mr. O’Brien, the former host of “The Tonight Show” on NBC, confirmed Friday that plans are in the works to book what is being called “a revue” starring Mr. O’Brien in theaters in major cities from California to New York, and perhaps parts further east and west–and maybe north.

After exploring the degree of interest with some locations, Mr. O’Brien’s team has received “enormous interest from all over,” said one of his representatives, who asked not to be identified because the plans are not yet ready to announce. “We’ve heard from the U.K., Scandinavia, Australia, Toronto, everywhere; it’s been incredible.”

Ugh, the snow and wind continue to swirl here in my neck of the woods (darn you, unnamed grocery store, for continually canceling my deliveries!), and I’m having weird flashbacks to my childhood in the Upper Midwest. In an attempt to keep my mind in the present, how about some updates on some of our friends at The Daily Show and Colbert Report?

Our friends over at PBS have released another teaser ad for Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Pluto Files, which will feature any number of our favorite people (like Stephen Colbert!) when it airs. Here’s a fun snippet with Brian Williams and some guy with a little cable show, Jon Stewart.

Mr. Stewart is keeping himself busy, performing stand-up gig in Vegas over the Super Bowl weekend. The Las Vegas Review Journal featured a pretty cool article on Jon to coincide with the gig, and it’s definitely worth a read. The story he told about bombing while opening for Sheena Easton (“[S]he poked her head in my dressing room and said (he mimics her Scottish accent), ‘Don’t worry, Jon. Tomorrow is another day.’”) … ouch!

Am I the only one completely baffled by the fact that January has gone by in the blink of an eye and that we’re already steam rolling straight through February? February of course, can mean only one thing – Vancouver!! But while Stephen is off polishing his skates in preparation for the Winter Olympics his friends will be back in the good old US of A working on their latest new projects.

Six Degrees: Daily Show Edition

Posted by: Tiger | Comments (1)

thumb_6degrees From comedy shows to music, the Daily Show correspondents are all over these days!

John Oliver (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)

  • I know I have been making time to watch John Oliver’s New York Stand-up Show at 11 PM EST, Fridays on Comedy Central, but apparently Rob Riggle isn’t particularly interested. For two weeks in a row, he has found ways to avoid supporting John’s new show:

As Rob is so eager to mention, it seems he will be on Comedy Central Presents in a couple of months, and we’ll be sure to let you know more about that.
    (h/t: MsInterpreted)

  • Here is an interesting opportunity to see John Oliver from before he was on The Daily Show. The last acting credit John has in IMDb before The Love Guru was as a car salesman on a British medical sitcom called Green Wing. So far as I can tell, he only appeared in a few clips only one minute into the first episode of the first season called “Caroline’s First Day.” You can see it all of yourself (if you’re in the US), as the entire series is now on Hulu. I have not watched the entire episode myself, but it looks like it could be a good show.
  • John recently appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Demetri Martin (Former Contributor, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)

  • Important Things with Demetri Martin is coming back for a second season, which is good new for many of you, I’m sure. While I didn’t watch the every show, all the clips I was able to catch were excellent! Although the shows won’t be airing for a while, there may still be tickets available for tapings in San Francisco in mid-February. Follow the link and if you do reserve tickets, let others know it’s possible in the comments.

John Hodgman (Contributor, The Daily Show with John Stewart)

  • If you’re in the Bay Area and you can’t see Demetri Martin’s show, you also have John Hodgman coming to you soon! He will be at the SF Sketchfest 2010 at 2 PM on January 30th at Cobb’s, where he will be conversing with Dave Eggers. To find out more about John’s appearance and the rest of the festival, which will have a long of other great comedians, check out this article.

Wyatt Cenac (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)

  • Although it’s too late to see the show, there was a great interview with him in preparation for that gig. There’s talk of the movie Wyatt starred in, Medicine for Melancholy and the way The Daily Show approaches cable news. He also mentions the field producers, of whom I’m far more aware since I started following Miles Kahn on Twitter. (h/t: MsInterpreted)

Aasif Mandvi (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)

  • The National, an English-language paper from Abu Dhabi, UAE, has a great article about Aasif. It discusses the film Today’s Special, which is based on his one-man show Sakina’s Restaurant. Given the setting of the film, there is much discussion of food in culture, particularly Indian culture. Aasif also talks about being involved with The Daily Show while also acting in films.

Ed Helms (Former Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)

  • Comedy Central Insider has some great YouTube videos of this great former correspondent showing off in way we’re not used to: on musical instruments. You can watch him playing the banjo while singing along, or playing the piano while chatting along. These are far more authentic uses of instrumental props than when Colbert and Dinello sang with the bassoons. (h/t: MsInterpreted.)

Hey, kids! The Paley Center has posted clips from last year’s talk with The Daily Show writers and, if you’ve got the time, they’re funny and illuminating viewing. Watch Miles Kahn, Wyatt Cenac, John Oliver, Rob Kutner, Steve Bodow, DJ Javerbaum, Rory Albanese, JR Havlan, Adam Lowitt and more. I can’t embed the clips, but click on the links or image below to go to the Paley Center’s YouTube channel (where you can also find clips from the hilarious 2002 Daily Show writers’ Paley Center chat). Six Degrees: Daily Show Edition

Posted by: Tiger | Comments (2)

thumb_6degrees The break week is a perfect time to see what’s up with the folks over at the Daily Show! The interview with Wyatt is pretty decent replacement for an evening of Daily Show viewing, or you might be able to plan an opportunity to see one of the correspondents live.

Wyatt Cenac (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)

  • Wyatt was the guest on episode 23 of the podcast WTF with Marc Maron. It’s available for download from that site, and also on iTunes. His interview begins during the 17th minute and continues for almost a half hour. Wyatt is so excellent at telling stories, and he also has some great analyses of television. It’s a very long interview, but you won’t want it to end, because there are tons of insights and silly moments. It has my recommendation!
  • There’s also an upcoming opportunity to see Wyatt performing live at Penn State, as a part of the College Humor Live tour. It’s December 5, 10:00 PM, at the Paul Robeson Cultural Center’s Heritage Hall. It’s also free of charge. You can read the student newspaper’s article for further information here. It seems like it could be aimed toward a very specific audience, and me telling you I’d go if I were able isn’t a great endorsement, and I’m a real life college student myself.

John Oliver (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)

  • John will be appearing, as part of an excellent comedy line-up, in the show “Tell Your Friends! We’ll Kick Cancer’s Butt!” 8:00 PM, December 8, at Comix. There is a Facebook page for the event here and you can buy tickets at the Comix website. Another familiar Daily Show personality Kristen Schaal is also part of the show. It sounds like great fun, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is unfortunately ever a worthy cause.

John Hodgman (Contributor, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)

  • The San Francisco website 7×7 has a very cool interview with John that coincided with his appearance there earlier this month. He discusses Twitter, meeting fans, and has some pretty amusing responses to other questions. (h/t wren)

Samantha Bee (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)

  • Around the time Sam was appearing on the It’s Satire! panel in Connecticut, The Hartford Courant had an article about her Daily Show work. It includes plenty of quotes from Sam, many of which focus on her part in field pieces and interviews for The Daily Show.

Amy Sedaris (Bonus person, because she’s cool!)

  • Amy will be guest-starring on the CBS show The New Adventures of Old Christine on December 9. She will play a woman who Christine treated poorly when they were in junior high. I’ve never watched Old Christine, but I’m so curious I might jump in for an episode to see Amy.

Six Degrees: Daily Show Edition

thumb_6degrees Once again, our favorite fearless interviewers are out and about, sharing their talent in a variety of venues. Check out what they’ve done, or possibly find an opportunity to see one of them for yourself! (Emphatic h/t to MsI and DB throughout.)

Samantha Bee (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)

  • Since the last time I’ve mentioned it in Six Degrees, Sam’s recently finished her role in the off-Broadway show <em>Love, Loss, and What I Wore</em>. She was interviewed twice as a result of her involvement with that show. In <a title="Samantha Bee: A Bee-autiful Life" target="_blank" href="http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/theatre/article/707647--samantha-bee-a-bee-autiful-life">this interview</a>, you can learn a lot about her experiences growing up, long before she was being funny on <em>The Daily Show</em>. For a rather amusing discussion of clothing, among other reflections, you can check out <a title="What's Up, Samantha Bee? The Daily Show Correspondent Finds Love Off-B'way" target="_blank" href="http://www.broadway.com/buzz/whats-up-samantha-bee-daily-show-correspondents-finds-love-offbway/">this interview</a>.
  • If you didn’t see the show in New York, another way you can see Sam is at The Connecticut Forum’s “It’s Satire!” show November 14th, 8:00 PM at The Bushnell Theater in Hartford. You can find ticket information at their website. David Javerbaum, who you’ll remember as co-lyricist of A Colbert Christmas, as well as former Executive Producer of The Daily Show, will also be appearing.
  • Whether you’re able to attend “It’s Satire!” or not, you can enjoy this interview by TWoP user shamskygirl. There’s discussion here of both process and gender in comedy, and Sam has some very insightful answers.

Larry Wilmore (Contributer, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)

  • Larry’s book I’d Rather We Got Casinos: And Other Black Thoughts was released in January, but if you’re in Miami, you still have a chance to hear about it from the man himself. Larry is one of the many authors who will be appearing at the Miami Book Fair, which will take place November 8-15. You can find out all about the fair at its website, and although it’s not immediately obvious when Larry will be there, you can probably find most other information about the fair, and possibly more specific information will be available there soon.
