Jonathan Coulton is WristSTRONG

Posted by: DB | Comments (6)

Tonight’s Episode Guide is going to be a little late. Because your dear webmaster was busy WristSTRONGing Jonathan Coulton at the Granada theater in Dallas, TX. (And hanging out a bit with Paul and Storm as well – very nice boys!)

Envy my exciting life.

WristSTRONG cake

Posted by: DB | Comments (10)

Sometimes my feed readers pop up something that’s a little old, like this, but it’s so cool I just had to post it.

From the Sugarmama NYC blog (7/14/2008):

WristSTRONG cake

I was lucky enough to be called to make a cake to celebrate the 1st anniversary of Stephen Colbert breaking his wrist, bringing awareness to Hollywood’s exploitation on wrist violence. I didn’t get to meet Stephen, but I did get to sit in his chair!

Check out SugarMama’s blog to see a pic of Stephen with the cake!

Video game designer Richard Garriott will soon become a tourist. . . in space. He’s nearly completed his training and plans to spend 10 days in orbit. Read the full TIME magazine article online for more information on Garriott’s lifelong history with space flight and NASA, his thoughts on the spaceflight preparation, and the one thing he really wants to do in zero gravity.

Garriott on the DNA idea and NASA astronaut Garrett Reisman:

One of your most important missions is preserving the DNA of Stephen Colbert for the future population of the human race. How did that come up?
I’m a big fan of the show, and when I was at a gaming [convention], one of my fans came up to me and gave me one of his WristStrong bracelets. I have of course worn it through my training, and we’ve been editing together a pitch because I thought basically, here was my ticket to get onto the show. And midway through my training, Garrett Reisman, a NASA astronaut who is also a fan of the show, called in from space, to show that he had this on his wrist. In space. And totally scooped me.

So we’d been sending photographs and video to the Colbert show during my training and we’d really gotten no response. Up until Operation Immortality, which originated purely as a promotion for [science fiction computer game] Tabula Rasa, thinking of it as a way I could tie my space game into my space flight. We wanted originally just to send some of the player data and player votes on the greatest accomplishments in humanity, and we thought it’d be cool to send some of their DNA.

Best of luck to you, Mr. Garriott!

Okay, this is one of those stories about Stephen and The Report that just makes me smile. I mean, how could I not? Stephen Colbert and WristSTRONG, gifts that keep on giving … and giving … and giving!

Stephen Colbert is my friend

A Stephen Colbert fan gets a gift
I am a huge fan of Stephen Colbert. Even bought his book, went to a signing, went to a taping of his TV show last year. I love him! He’s brilliant. Gaspar and I watch The Colbert Report every night.

On his show, he wears a red Wrist Strong bracelet – long story, he broke his wrist on the show and thought there should be a cause to champion his condition, made the bracelet to raise “wrist awareness” – hilarity ensued. The idea when you wear one of Colbert’s bracelets is to give it to someone more famous than you if you get to meet them. Astronaut Garrett Reisman recently wore his into space. He did a live remote from space on The Colbert Report, showed his bracelet, spun it around it in anti-gravity and talked about the mission

. . .

Now what does this have to do with my awesome autographed photo? About a week after Garrett Reisman appeared on The Colbert Report I’m at work and receive a phone call …

I love both this story and the reason behind it (Stephen’s WristSTRONG excitement). Truly, there’s only one word for it: awwwwww!

Thanks to Zoner Nukaleu, who shared these stories with me recently:

I have a Wristwatch update from my neck of the woods. I just recently gave WS Bracelets to two people.

My parents are good friends with Ronnie Milsap’s road manager and lead guitarist, Jamie Brantley. We went to a Milsap concert in Davenport, Iowa on the third, and we met with Jamie backstage. I had one for him and did the official pass-off. He looked down to it, saying, “What kind of strong am I?…..I’m WRISTSTRONG?!?!?” followed by a triumphant and dramatic raise of his left arm. Jamie wore it “for the world to see” during the show. He said he would try to get Ronnie to wear it, but I’m not holding my breath, because Ronnie is a major Righty.

Jamie and Ronnie:

Jamie and the bracelet on stage:

On the fourth we went to a Bryan Adams concert in St. Louis (squee!). I had one prepared with a note attached briefly explaining what it was. It was a tiny venue and I was only a few steps from the stage, so I ran up and handed it to him. He didn’t put the bracelet on or read the actual contents of the note to the audience (but rather teased and read it as if I was asking to come backstage after the show…don’t flatter yourself, Bryan), but he hung it on the corner of the music stand.
