‘Selected Shorts: A Touch of Magic’ a finalist for 2010 Audie

Congratulations to the folks at Symphony Space and the authors and cast responsible for the stories on the Selected Shorts: A Touch of Magic collection, which was announced yesterday as one of the finalists for the 2010 Audie in the “Audiobook Adaptation” category! As regulars here know, the collection features some oustanding performances of several wonderful stories, including Stephen Colbert reading the Ray Bradbury short story “The Veldt”.

As with the last time I blogged about this collection, I can only urge people to purchase this excellent selection of recordings; it really is worth every penny, and it does not appear to be available online. (Supporting Symphony Space by buying a copy is also just a very cool move, IMO.) If you’re new to the world of Stephen Colbert readings — or if you just feel like revisiting another great performance — here’s a link to his reading of the hilarious T. Coraghessan Boyle story “The Lie”.

‘Icehole Lager’ beer to debut in Canada

If you’re going to be in the Vancouver area this next month or so, you might have the opportunity to check out a very unique brew.
In response to Stephen Colbert calling Canadians a bunch of syrup suckers and iceholes for not letting the U.S. Olympic Speedskating team practice on the ice oval, Vancouver’s R&B microbrewery has created a very special lager. Barry Benson, co-owner of R&B Brewing Co. says “We are proud syrup-sucking Canadian iceholes. In celebration of our icehole-ish behaviour we have decided to get even rather than get mad. Canadians can wreak their revenge against Stephen Colbert in a truly Canadian way and have a beer.”

Greetings, Zoners! I hope you’re all enjoying your weekend. It’s been very quiet out in the world of Colbert news; I don’t know if that’s because of what’s happening with those other late night guys, or if everyone has just decided to be lazy. But I do have a few items to share with you, so here’s your somewhat abbreviated zeitgeist for January 17th.
HD upgrade
- NEP Studios Upgrades Studios for Colbert Report and Daily Show to HD – EarthTimes.org: NEP Studios, the largest Studio Facility provider in Manhattan, did the studio upgrade for both TDS and TCR. This article discusses a bit about how that was done while the shows were still on air and taping in standard definition. It was a six-month process that ended with both shows making their debut in HD on January 4th.
Who’s “Honoring” Stephen Now
- Who’s honoring Stephen now: the Mormons – Salt Lake Tribune: The Mormon blog bycommonconsent.com named Stephen Colbert as its “Gentile of the Year,” the non-Mormon with the biggest impact — positive or negative — on Mormonism during 2009: “His coverage of the SLC Main Street Plaza ‘trespassing’ arrest of Derek Jones and Matt Aune, including a star turn by BYU law professor John Fee, reminded us all that sometimes truth can be stranger than fiction.”
