Stephen Colbert is not making money off of Twitter
Posted by: | Comments
I’ve gotten multiple messages today about a story that is circulating about Stephen Colbert making money off of Twitter. The story, reported by such mainstream news outlets as the New York Post, and by blogs such as MediaBistro, goes a little something like this: Stephen Colbert is on the Twitter ad service Ad.ly, and is being paid to promote products in his tweets. He is one of many “Publishers” who is paid to promote products within his Twitter feed.
There’s only one problem with this widely reported story – they’ve got the wrong Stephen.
Back in the summer of 2008, we wrote a story that basically said that, at the time, there was no official Twitter feed for Stephen Colbert. This was confirmed by our sources at Comedy Central. At the time, there were two major fake Stephens – @StephenColbert (currently at 382,677 followers) and @StephenTColbert (currently at 97,597 followers). The controversy about @stephentcolbert actually got so big that he “came out” as a fake in a blog post that said, in part:
While perusing twitter, (I do have a personal account, but it is highly unlikely that a living soul will ever come across it), I found that someone was posting under the name of “StephenColbert”, the host of my favourite television program. The account consisted of a number of quotes from the show and had not been updated in quite a few months. Finding my own life extremely boring, certainly not “twitterable”, I thought it would be humourous to create another Colbert account, this one updated with some regularity and more than just quotes, but I ended posting quotes anyway due to the lack of my personal creativity. I began to notice that while twittering back and forth with people some of them reacted as if I was the real-deal. I thought that if they enjoyed thinking that they were actually interacting with Colbert, why deny them that small pleasure, as I assumed the majority of people that followed the account knew it was all done in jest. I also had a lot of fun doing it.
The account eventually made the front page of Digg, and @stephentcolbert admitted to the fraud and went on. Or so it seemed.
Now @stephentcolbert is one of the Ad.ly “Publishers”, making money off of tweeting to people, most of who are under the assumption that Stephen Colbert is actually tweeting this information. A person is making money, possibly significant, from tweets made on this fake Stephen account.
Stephen Colbert (and Viacom lawyers) have always been very gentle on fan sites, even fan sites that claim to be Stephen himself. So I doubt that this person will be hounded by anyone legal to call them on their fraud. However, for those many people who have send e-mails and twitters of concern to the site, let me make this very clear.
1) Stephen Colbert’s official Twitter site is @stephenathome.
This is the only verified Twitter account affiliated with Stephen Colbert. Any other that you may stumble across is NOT Stephen Colbert.
2) Stephen Colbert is not affiliated with Ad.ly.
The person who Ad.ly is using to say that Stephen Colbert is one of their “publishers” is NOT Stephen Colbert. It is a fake account who has admitted to its fakeness and is now reaping financial benefits from duping Stephen Colbert fans.
This also means that Stephen is not making some money on the side through his tweets. The official Twitter account continues to simply be an Easter Egg for the hard core “C-Section” fans.

Lil Jon responds to his mention on the ‘Colbert Report’
Posted by: | CommentsStephen Colbert mentioned Lil Jon on Monday night’s episode of the ‘Colbert Report’. Apparently Lil Jon got wind of it and expressed his pleasure about the situation on his Twitter feed.
Also? I love that Lil Jon’s Twitter background of him as a puppet (from Crank Yankers, maybe?). If you missed the segment, here it is in glorious HD.

For a long while, a group of us have been maintaining the @colberttix Twitter feed. The problem with doing this feed, however, is that it took a lot of searching, and hoping we had good timing, and we knew we were missing a lot of ticket availability windows out there. But we did the best we could.
This week, however, ColbertNation.com user spiffomatic64 came up with a most brilliant tool. Spiff has created a script to tweet both the availability of tickets as well as announcing when those tickets are gone. I’ve been watching it all day, for both the ‘Daily Show’ and ‘Colbert Report’ ticket availability, and it definitely works as advertised.
So if you’re wanting tickets, and you’re a Twitterer, go follow @DailyTix – NOW! You won’t be sorry – never miss an open ticket window again! We’ve already got Zoners who are following and getting tickets.
Also, for all of you Twitterers, don’t forget you can follow both the No Fact Zone feed as well as my rantings about my daily life at @dbferguson.

Stephen Colbert in the Zeitgeist – December 3, 2009
Posted by: | Comments
Greetings, gang! I was thinking, as I was getting the material for this post ready, that it feels like I haven’t done a zeitgeist post in ages. And then I realized… I haven’t done a zeitgeist post in ages. Last week was pretty quiet once the dust settled from Stephen’s trip to Lake Placid. This week has been a little slow, too, but it sure is good to have the joy machine back, isn’t it? Break weeks are good for getting caught up on other things, but I do miss that brilliant smile on my TV screen every night. Here’s the news, such as it is, that’s been piling up for the past week and a half, your zeitgeist for December 3rd.
Giving thanks
- Thanks a Lot: Pop Culture’s Finest Moments of 2009 – Wired’s “Underwire” blog: In the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday here in the U.S., Scott Thill takes the opportunity to express his thanks for the past year’s best moments in pop culture. First on his list? Stephen Colbert. (Click on the link to the article for some bonus eye candy.)
“Stephen Colbert’s hyper-real genius – Is there a braver comedian, or journalist, on television? Stephen Colbert’s nightly merge of news, hilarity, social commentary, wit and shameless plugs for everything from his painting in the Smithsonian to his marketable man-seed have fully turned the pop-culture’s self-obsessed mirror upon itself. In 2009, he successfully invaded Iraq, the International Space Station, the iPhone, and much more… Colbert is Earth’s most relevant living cultural critic, and deserves his own network.”
Name dropping from a comedy legend
- A.V. Club interviews Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner: This is just a quick mention, but given the source I couldn’t help but think “how cool!” In this great interview, Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner discuss the origin of their classic 2000-Year-Old Man routine and the dynamic of their comedy partnership. It’s an excellent example of the straight-guy/funny-guy dynamic, where the straight guy does all the set-ups and the funny guy gets all the laughs and often all of the credit. Mel Brooks cites Stephen as an example of someone who handles the set-up role very well: “Right from the beginning, I wanted the laughs. I wasn’t going to waste a minute setting things up. But Carl loved that job. I think today, Stephen Colbert does that beautifully. He plays that kind of naïve far-right Republican, and he plays it so earnestly and so naïvely, just the way Carl would play it with me and the 2,000-Year-Old Man.” The difference with Stephen, of course, is that he does his own set-up, then gets to deliver the punch line as well.
Evelyn McGee-Colbert
- I previously mentioned this in a zeitgeist post back in August: one of the producers of the comedy Circumcise Me, currently playing off-Broadway at the Bleecker Street Theatre, is the lovely Evelyn McGee-Colbert. The play is written and performed by Yisrael Campbell, a former Catholic who mines some comedy gold out of his spiritual journey to Orthodox Judaism. The posters for the show include this quote from Stephen: “Yisrael Campbell is the funniest Roman Catholic Orthodox Jewish comedian in the world. Hurry and see him before he turns Buddhist.” If you’re in New York and interested in seeing the show, tickets are available through January 17th; click the link to the play for more info.
I Am America (And So Can You!)
- Want an autographed copy of IAAASCY? The ArtPride New Jersey Foundation is having an online auction to raise money for the arts in NJ. The autographed book is one of the items up for grabs, and the bidding so far is quite reasonable. The estimated value of the item? “Priceless.” (Heh.) The auction is open now and ends on December 11. You can view the relevant information and place a bid on the book here.
Better Know a Lobby
- Hah! Monday’s “Better Know a Lobby” guest, Joseph Cirincione, posted this admission on Twitter the day after his appearance: “Stephen Colbert does the best imitation of a nuclear explosion I have ever seen.”
