Stephen Colbert to appear in “The Pluto Files” on PBS
Posted by: | CommentsHere’s something that looks like fun for all of us space geeks! On March 2nd, PBS is scheduled to air The Pluto Files, hosted by rockstar astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and based on his book of the same name. From the program description on the show’s web site:
The Pluto Files
Premiere broadcast on PBS: March 2, 2010
. . .From Boston to California, Tyson’s spirited journey explores the history of Pluto — from the time of its discovery to its fall from planethood. Along the way, Tyson meets a fascinating cast of characters, from scientists who argue over Pluto’s status to die-hard “Plutophiles” — regardless of where they stand they have one thing in common: strong opinions about Pluto. “The Pluto Files” also includes special appearances by Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, Diane Sawyer, and Brian Williams, who share their affection for the former planet. “I’m sorry, I thought planets might be one of the constants in life,” Colbert jests. “But scientists just love change more than anything else. I’m sorry that’s not change I can believe in.”
. . .
There’s a preview of the program posted on PBS’ web site which I can’t embed here, but you can catch a glimpse of Dr. Tyson being interviewed on both The Daily Show and the Report. There’s also a promo video up on YouTube, in which Jon Stewart calls Dr. Tyson a “galactic despot” and Brian Williams gets in a little dig at Stewart and Colbert. This is going to be so entertaining!

A Mother’s Day special, featuring Stephen Colbert’s much-loved mother
Posted by: | CommentsJennie finds the coolest stuff to share with us. This is just one of the sweetest examples of a mother-son relationship I’ve come across in a long time. First, here’s a video of Stephen’s mom, Lorna Colbert, talking about her son for an upcoming Mother’s Day show (airing May 8th on South Carolina ETV’s The Big Picture):
Then our reader Jennifer also sent us info about the show (emphasis in original):
ETV’s “The Big Picture” Presents Special Mother’s Day-Themed Program
Thursday, May 8 at 7 p.m.
Gabfest Features Moms of Famous South Carolinians Gov. Mark Sanford, Kristin “Sex and the City” Davis, Stephen “The Colbert Report” Colbert and Richard “NE Patriots” SeymourColumbia SC…While ETV’s “The Big Picture” is primarily known for the heft of the topics it takes on–everything from a group sit-down with former governors to the first joint interview with Senators Graham and DeMint– the show decided to make a “serious” attitude adjustment in honor of Mother’s Day.
The reasoning went like this: What better way to spotlight Mother’s Day than to bring together–for the first time–the moms of some of South Carolina’s most celebrated offspring. What resulted is a behind-the-scenes look at four current or former residents of the Palmetto State–Gov. Mark Sanford, Stephen Colbert, Kristin Davis and Richard Seymour–and the mothers who raised them.
. . .
The program is full of surprising tidbits and fun, including a special Mother’s Day greeting from Stephen Colbert straight from the set of his popular show. Deborah Seymour says she was once told by doctors that her four-time Super Bowl playing son would never participate in sports; Dorothy Davis reveals how daughter Kristin strongly advised her against watching the first few episodes of “Sex and the City” when it hit the airwaves; Margaret Peyton offers anecdotal evidence about her son’s childhood piggybank that suggests the governor has long been fiscally conservative; and Lorna Colbert says her famous political-satirist son Stephen, won’t even tell her whether he really is a Democrat or a Republican.
. . .
Finally, if you go here, you can watch more from Stephen’s mom (video opens on the main page), Stephen’s video to his mom (video opens at the “Video” link), and some photos provided by his mom (including one of Stephen, Paul Dinello and Amy Sedaris from their Second City days). What riches!
Thanks very much for the tips, Jennie and Jennifer, and a huge nod of appreciation to Stephen, South Carolina’s ETV, and most of all, Lorna Colbert!

Here’s a reminder of what happened during the last benefit:

Take Two: ‘Meet the Press’ offers a web extra with the real Stephen Colbert
Posted by: | CommentsHope you all remembered to watch “Stephen” on Meet the Press this morning – Tim Russert really went after him for a lot of his statements in I Am America (And So Can You!). My own take was that Stephen looked unsure of whether to respond as himself or as “Stephen”, but he more or less stayed in character. [Editor's note: As I noted previously, Russert interviewed him at his book signing at GWU this past Friday. Stephen stated that he enjoyed Russert's interview there much more than he had enjoyed the one at the Meet the Press studio.] If you DID miss it, you’ll have another chance to watch it later today/tomorrow: Meet the Press re-airs at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT and again at 2 a.m. ET/11 p.m. PT.
In the meantime, here’s the brief “web extra” from MSNBC.com. It won’t break any new ground for most of the fans, but it’s extra Stephen, which I’d say NFZ’s readers are going to be happy about (click on the image to open the MSNBC video):
EDITED TO ADD: If you can’t wait until 6 p.m. for the rebroadcast, Crooks and Liars has the clip posted here already.

TiVo Alert! Stephen Colbert to appear on ‘Meet the Press’ this Sunday
Posted by: | CommentsOur good friend Rachel Sklar over at HuffPo has the scoop: Stephen Colbert continues his media blitz this Sunday with Tim Russert (as played by a pumpkin):
Stephen Colbert On “Meet The Press” This Sunday
Huffington Post | Rachel Sklar | October 17, 2007 06:57 PMNBC has confirmed that Stephen Colbert will appear on this week’s “Meet The Press” with Tim Russert to discuss his book, I Am America (And So Can You!), which he seems to be threatening to promote by running for president. Also appearing with Colbert will apparently be other comics including Jay Leno, Mark Russell and Steve Bridges — yes, that Steve Bridges, the President Bush impersonator whom Colbert last appeared with at that infamous White House Correspondents Dinner. We’re not entirely sure what’s planned, but we’re always pleased when politics, media and comedy intersect. One small nit, though: Why no funny women? Amy Poehler who does a mean Hillary? Kirsten Wiig as Pelosi? We’re just saying. (We know, so out of character!) Okay, see you Sunday. P.S. If you want to sleep in, go ahead — we hear it’ll be at the end of the show.
Sweet! Even better news (for me, anyway), the Meet the Press page contains this nugget of information:
New time for Meet the Press re-broadcast
Please note that effective last Sunday, Meet the Press is re-broadcast on MSNBC-TV Sunday night at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT and again at 2 a.m. ET/11 p.m. PT.
UPDATE AND CORRECTION: Stephen will be the ONLY comedian appearing on this Sunday’s Meet the Press. Sorry for the confusion, folks, but props to the folks over at “Eat the Press” for catching their error quickly. (And props to Jennie, too, for passing along the info!)
