Stephen Colbert at the Time 100 - 2006

‘Tis the season for the Time 100 votes, and for the third year in a row, Stephen Colbert has been nominated in the voting segment of the Time 100 awards.

However, this year, it’s already turning out to be a very interesting contest. In the running, along with the normal assortment of celebrities, politicos, and philanthropists is a gentleman by the name of “moot“. “moot” is the founder of an image website called 4chan. Now most bloggers, most smart bloggers anyway, speak of 4chan the way that Stephen Colbert speaks of Muslims – 4chan is a great and true website, as revealed to “moot”, blessings and peace be upon him. Their community is strong, scary, and most of all deserves all the respect a webmaster who does not want her site hacked can muster.

“moot” is already in the lead with votes, placing #1 and garnering over 100,000 more votes than his nearest competitor, Jon Stewart.

moot

I have no doubt that at some point in the near future, Stephen will sic the nation on the Time 100 site, but until then, we’ll give him our unsolicited support. And seriously, 4chan mob, please don’t hurt us. We only wish to praise Stephen Colbert and delight in the happiness of our fearless leader. Thank you.

‘Cause if you didn’t know it, you must be living under a rock or something. Seems like everywhere I look today, people are talking about that HILARIOUS dance-off. This is by no means comprehensive, but here’s a round-up of some of the reactions I’ve seen. Several people out there commented on Stephen’s dancing (and quite positively, which shouldn’t surprise anyone here):

  • Huffington PostDance-Off! Colbert, Rain Duel Over Time 100 Ranking: “Last night, Stephen Colbert complained that Korean pop star Rain bested him on the Time.com poll of the world’s most influential people (Rain was #2 while Colbert came in third). So at the end of the show, they did what most movers and shakers do to settle the score: they staged a dance-off.”
  • POPSEOUL!Rain’s Dance Showdown on Stephen Colbert: “Even though Rain won the dance-off and catapulted Colbert to the ground by breaking the DDR machine with his magic feet, in the end, it was Colbert who won this dance battle. Considering that he’s a mock political pundit by trade, Colbert’s dancing was, by far, more impressive and original as opposed to Rain’s recycled one.”
  • ShenYuePopRain-COL DANCE OFF IS HAPPENING!: One commenter said, “Man, just when I thought it was over, Rain shows up. He danced pretty well and Colbert was not bad either …”
  • Kotaku.comColbert V Rain: DDR: “Colbert is many things, but a graciously loser isn’t one of them. After going off on Miyamoto for swiping the top spot in Time’s 100 most influential people list (and calling Donkey Kong a game about hate crime), he settles on the person he’s rally mad at. No, not himself: RAIN!!!”

[Editor's note: Most of the commenters were more forgiving; here's one example: "The most surprising thing is that Colbert (or, as distinguished Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton would say, kohl-BURT) can, y'know, REALLY dance. You wouldn't think that a forty-something married white man from South Carolina would have moves, but the man has moves."]

  • JavabeansRain and Colbert: The dance(Dance Revolution)-off: “Rain did show off some dance moves before the Dance Dance Revolution portion, and although I don’t think he showed himself to his best advantage (he dances more impressively in his music videos, imo), he acquitted himself reasonably well … Plus, the burden of the humor (and the brunt of the joke) was borne by Colbert himself, who countered Rain’s flashy moves with his own laughably dorky ones (but performed with complete gravitas, of course).” [Editor's note: There are some great comments on this one, I think.]

And if you want more than that, our loyal reader Daniel left this link to a Hong Kong “Cloud” forum earlier. I can’t read all of it, of course, but I got a huge kick out of all the emoticons. He and mrtigger001 kindly noted that there are at least a couple of compliments to Stephen, even on the Rain forum. Unfortunately, I can’t remember *where* I read it (and that’s driving me nuts), but my favorite comment on this whole episode so far extolled Stephen’s dancing … and simultaneously compared his moves to those of “Mr. Bean“! I’m not a huge Mr. Bean fan, but that totally cracked me, up for some reason.

All in all, great job, Stephen, Rain and everyone involved. And, just for old times’ sake, let’s have another look at the video that started it all: He’s Singin’ In Korean:

Preparing for a dance-off? Or a cuddle-off?The gauntlet has been thrown and the trash-talking begun, fans have blogged about it and TIME Magazine wrote about it, but when will the much-anticipated day arrive? I’m talking, of course, about the day that the footage from Rain’s visit to The Colbert Report is finally revealed.

While all we have to report remains in the “unsubstantiated rumor” category, it may be that we’ll finally get to see Rain on Monday’s Colbert Report. Again, these are rumors (and we all know that Stephen’s hard to predict) but, personally, I can’t think of a funnier thing to showcase on Monday … which, unless I’m missing something, will also be the show used to mark Stephen’s entry onto the UK scene!

Tips of the hat to Jennie and crh1s!

Straight from the horse’s mouth: here’s what TIME magazine had to say about its poll results.

From TIME (emphasis added, internal links omitted):

Colbert, Rain Not Most Influential
Wednesday, Apr. 30, 2008
By CARYN BROOKS

The second annual TIME 100 poll pitted more than 200 scientists, intellectuals, corporate titans, heads of state, cable TV hosts and Korean pop singers against each other in a competition to determine one thing: who is the world’s most influential person?

Despite aggressive campaigning on Larry King Live, Today and his own show, the voters have spoken — and the winner is not Stephen Colbert. The falsely outraged host will reportedly address this slight on his eponymous pretend cable news program later this evening.

If there’s any consolation for Colbert, it’s that his arch nemesis, peach-cheeked South Korean pop star Rain, didn’t win either.

. . .

Ooh, dare we hope that the reference to Stephen addressing the results on tonight’s show might, just perhaps, be a hint on the great Stephen/Rain meeting? At any rate, thanks to the good folks at TIME, Inc. for putting together this interesting (and occasionally infuriating) contest.

It’s official, ladies and gentlemen. The polls are closed and the vote-rigging has ended. From TIME:

Your TIME 100

TIME asked who you thought should be on the list of the 100 most influential people of the year. Over 200 candidates were given a rating of 1 to 100. And your #1 choice? Shigeru Miyamoto! The video game designer had almost 2 million votes, over 300,000 more than runner-up, Rain. After a tight race at the top, Stephen Colbert came in third place with close to 900,000 votes.

See the full list here

And now Stephen will have to yell both, “Raaaaaaainnn!” and “Miiiiyamoooooto!”

Thanks for the tip, Melissa!

Some of you who have been following the Time 100 race for the Most Influential Person may notice that Stephen has been fluctuating between first and third place, with Shigeru Miyamoto (Nintendo guru) and Rain. Gawker did some research and found out how exactly that was happening:

This year, three extreme cult followings have made Shigeru Miyamoto, Stephen Colbert and Rain the “most influential” people in the world. Joyce Kim, CEO of the Korean-American site Soompi, explained to me how three communities are battling it out to crown a winner.

So last year Rain won — because the community members on my site all voted. Now we’re voting for him again. He is the biggest guy in Asia, like Michael Jackson and JT rolled up into one. Mega mega star in Asia. But people here don’t know him because he doesn’t sing in English.

Stephen Colbert got all pissed that he came in #2 last year, and he did this really funny skit with a Korean music video. He was literally singing in Korean. And this year, when the voting started again, he did a show last week saying “Go vote for me, so I can beat my arch rival Rain.” So his ColbertNation.com fans got on it.

Then Digg.com starting voting for Miyamoto — the creator of Mario, Donkey Kong etc. at Nintendo — and put him on #1.

You win by ranking, not number of votes. So you see how Rain has the most votes. It’s because the Colbert folks are organizing in their forums to vote him down.

Thanks for that explanation, Gawker. Now, we here at NFZ have always advocated a fair fight, and Stephen clearly stated that he wanted people to vote for him, NOT that he wanted people to vote Rain or anyone else down. I think that’s important to remember.

And isn’t it all for fun anyway? What are your thoughts? And let’s play nice, children, in our comments here.
