Daily Show Toss Recap – Klassic
Posted by: | CommentsBefore we go, let’s check in with our good friend Stephen Colbert of The Colbert Report…
Happy weekend, Zoners! Oh, I was so hoping we’d get a new Toss this week; I was holding out great hopes for Thursday’s show. Alas, no luck this week. So let’s go to the vault! Here’s a great one from 2006:
6/15/2006: Daily/Colbert – Mad Magazine: Stephen points out Mad Magazine’s lampooning of the Daily Show, but takes issue with their blasting his meaningless non-sequiturs.
Does anyone have this issue of Mad Magazine? I haven’t read that magazine since I was a kid (in fact, I’m surprised to learn they were still publishing it as recently as 2006, and indeed that it’s still being published on a quarterly basis). I love this Toss because it’s so meta, referencing a Toss within a Toss, and then parodying a parody of itself. My mind nearly folds into itself just describing it. Yahtzee! What do you all think of this Klassic?

Greetings, Zoners! I hope everyone has enjoyed this week’s Vancouverage as much as I have. I’ve never found myself enjoying the Olympics this much; as a member of the Colbert Nation and a (tiny) contributor to the US Speedskating team, I feel like I actually have a stake in the games for a change. Of course, with Stephen’s special coverage of the games, we didn’t get a Toss this week. But never fear, there’s always plenty more on The Daily Show’s website. Today, as we dig into the archives, we find Stephen rocking out to Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall.”
1/30/2007, Daily/Colbert – Tyson: Neil deGrasse Tyson gave Stephen two free tickets to Laser Floyd.
I adore that screen capture.
I’m with Jon; I wish they’d kept the cameras rolling to see how long Stephen would go! I’m sure he would have done the whole song. Since Friend of the Show Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s PBS special The Pluto Files begins next week (premiere is Tuesday, March 2nd), I thought this might be an apt time to give it another quick little plug.
Incidentally, for the full effect of the “Laser Floyd” reference, be sure to also watch Jon’s Intro for that night. For the uninitiated, the Hayden Planetarium is home to the big time laser show that all the kids in the Tri-State area head to, also referenced in Fountains of Wayne’s excellent song “Laser Show.” In high school, I had a lot of friends who spent a lot of time at Laser Floyd. As a nerdygirl, this is a Toss that’s near and dear to my heart.

Daily Show Toss Recap – week of 2/8/2010
Posted by: | CommentsBefore we go, let’s check in with our good friend Stephen Colbert of The Colbert Report…
I hereby proclaim the week of February 8th as Official Toss Week of ‘010, because this week we got not just one, but two glorious Tosses! Makes up for the long dry spell from early December to January, doesn’t it? Lots to cover this week, so let’s jump right in with Wednesday’s:
2/10/2010, Daily/Colbert – High-Definition Ski Mask: In high definition, Stephen mistakes Jon’s face for a ski mask made from an elephant’s scrotum.
Awesome! This is my favorite Toss in a good long while. I’ve mentioned before that I’m a sucker for watching the boys crack each other up. There’s no way that “elephant scrotum” joke was planned, judging by Jon’s reaction. “It looks good on you, though!”
But wait, there’s more! Here’s Thursday’s Toss:
2/11/2010, Daily/Colbert – Olympics Excitement: Stephen wants to share his excitement about going to the Olympics with his fans, not Jon’s.
Here Jon wants to promote Stephen’s stint at the Olympics, but Stephen would prefer to share it with his audience, not Jon’s. Although I love Stephen’s little “Here comes my Shooowwww!” at the end, my favorite part is when he says “That’s something I wanted to promote to my fans, not yours” through his clenched teeth.
How did everyone like this week’s Tosses?

Greetings, fellow Zoners and Toss Fans! No new Toss this week, but that affords us an opportunity to dig into the wonderful treasure trove of archives over at The Daily Show’s website. Here’s a popular fave:
July 13, 2006: Daily/Colbert – Pirate Suit: Though Stephen Colbert wears a pirate suit for his children, his marriage is still in trouble.
Arrrr, I’m a sucker for watching the boys crack each other up! Stephen’s absolutely adorkable in his pirate costume, too. This one is a big fan favorite, and for good reason, I think! Your thoughts, Zoners?

Daily Show Toss Recap – Week of 1/25/10

Greetings and happy Friday, Zoners! I feel spoiled — two Tosses in two weeks! When is the last time we saw that?
Daily/Colbert – Stephen Watches Every Episode: Stephen’s favorite part of the show was the thing when Jon told those jokes about the news and stuff.
May I make a tiny confession? What with the Australian Open this week, and the State of the Union and ensuing analysis and commentary, I haven’t actually watched The Daily Show or The Colbert Report this week. As a result, this Toss made me feel a little guilty! I feel a little bit like Stephen — caught having to admit that I haven’t watched. I will catch up this weekend via Hulu (what did we do before the internet?). I’m sorry that I missed this great Toss, though — I just love the look on Stephen’s face when Jon asks “What was your favorite part?” and Stephen knows he’s caught. So busted!

Zoners and Toss Fans, rejoice! Our long national nightmare is now over! Sure, the Democrats’ super majority might be gone, the chance at health care reform seems to be slipping away, and the Supreme Court may have just granted corporations pretty much the ability to simply buy elections, BUT! We finally got a new Toss, the first Toss of 2010. Let’s take solace in the little things, shall we? Now, for your viewing pleasure, the first Toss of ‘010!
January 19, 2010; Daily/Colbert – GFF’s: Stephen would like to know if he and Jon aren’t good friends anymore.
My analysis? Worth the wait! To me there is little on earth funnier than Stephen’s fake tears, which he holds back admirably here — but they are both clearly suppressing giggles too. I was surprised they made it through this one without cracking up. If anyone’s heading to Great Adventure this weekend, keep an eye out for Jon and Stephen!

Greetings, Zoners! It has now been five weeks since our last new Toss from The Daily Show. To help us through this very dark time, I’ve dug up the following Klassic Toss from June 2008, to help tides us over:
June 18, 2008; Daily/Colbert – Crossword Puzzle: Stephen solves the New York Times crossword puzzle with the word he coined.
This one gives me a good giggle, because they are clearly as excited as little boys that Stephen’s word made it to the Puzzle. Has anyone seen the film Wordplay? It’s a documentary about crossword puzzles and the people who enjoy them (it’s way more interesting than that makes it sound, trust me), and Jon is one of the celebrities interviewed about his obsession with Will Shortz and the Times Crossword. It’s fun; I recommend it.
I am jonesing to see the first High Definition Toss of the year, but until we get one I’ll just keep the Klassics coming.

Greetings, Toss fans! How’s everyone enjoying high definition Daily Show and Colbert Report? The widescreen goodness has been the highlight of my television week, I don’t mind telling you. No new Toss this week so I pulled one up from last year around this time. Let’s get in our Wayback Machine and recall this gem from January 2009:
Daily/Colbert – New Year’s Resolutions: Stephen’s resolution is to not make any resolutions.
I wonder if Jon achieved his 2009 goal of getting rid of his gonorrhea once and for all? Hope that tincture of mercury came in handy. How about you, Zoners? Anyone make any resolutions for 2010? Hope everyone is having a good New Year so far.
