‘Love Guru’ wins three Razzie awards
Posted by: | Comments
‘The Love Guru’, a 2008 movie featuring Stephen Colbert as a drugged-out sportscaster and Jim Gaffigan as his ever-tortured sidekick, has made one final splash onto the scene – as a three-time Razzie winner. The Razzies are a set of awards given out the night before the Oscars that nominate the worst of the worst of the movies of the previous year, in a tongue and cheek fashion of course.
‘The Love Guru’ took home the Golden Raspberry award for Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay, and Worst Actor. While not the winningest movie ever – that would go to 2003’s Gigli who won in the top five categories at the Razzies (Worst Picture, Actor, Actress, Director and Screenplay) – it definitely shows a special talent to be grabbing three of the five top honors. While the sting of a Razzie may hurt for some, this award is something this blog can take in stride, as Stephen was mentioned in multiple reviews as the funniest thing about the entire movie.
If you’d like to watch the best part of the DVD, feel free to enjoy this hilarious montage of outtakes by Stephen and Jim Gaffigan (WARNING: Video is NSFW). I think most of the jokes will make sense even if you haven’t seen the movie. And sadly, many of the jokes in this video are actually quite a bit funnier than what actually made it into the movie.

I’ve included a video review of the two movies, and the pluses and minuses of each movie. No new Stephen footage, but some good bits with “Get Smart”.

The reviews for ‘The Love Guru’ come in – ” … but Stephen Colbert is hilarious!”
Posted by: | Comments
We’ve been waiting anxiously here at No Fact Zone for the reviews to come out for The Love Guru, opening this Friday, June 20th. And the reviews are, quite honestly, what we were kind of expecting. But many of the reviews we’ve read have a common theme.
The only actor who really scores is news talk show/comic Stephen Colbert, who plays a drug-addled, sex-addicted hockey broadcaster. He is absolutely hysterical.
He’s written a nice bit for Stephen Colbert as a drug-addled Pat O’Brien-type announcer. So all of that is good and suggests that with “The Love Guru” out of his system, Myers could return to form.
One Sentence: Stephen Colbert was the only thing good in this movie. … The only thing that was even remotly amusing was Stephen Colbert, and I bet he either wrote, or changed his lines himself.
The only bits I really enjoyed in ‘The Love Guru’, besides some B-side riffing by Stephen Colbert, were the gonzo musical numbers, a form that Myers arguably understands better than anyone actually directing musicals today.
Also faring surprisingly well in a tiny supporting role is Stephen Colbert, although it would have been funnier if one of the teams had a bear for a mascot so that Colbert could riff on the film’s pro-bear agenda. Colbert delivers some of the best lines in the movie as a drug addicted play by play announcer who never censors the words that come out of his mouth when he’s high.
Then, being Québécois myself, I found Justin Timberlake to be particularly hilarious, and I was also tickled by the supporting performances of Stephen Colbert, The Daily Show’s John Oliver and Verne Troyer, even though it feels like the latter is doing leftover Mini-Me material.

We don’t get many chances to see Stephen on the big screen, so I know I’ll be going on Friday night!

Preview: Stephen Colbert in “The Love Guru”
Posted by: | CommentsThanks to Zoner Fleur for tipping me off to this preview of the new Mike Myers movie “The Love Guru”, playing in theaters on June 20th. Stephen Colbert has a cameo as a hockey announcer, and can be seen oh so briefly in this clip.
Here’s an early review of Stephen’s performance, courtesy of Ain’t It Cool News (via Fanhouse):
The supporting cast basically add up to a list of extended cameos, but when it comes to the previous Myers flicks, the cameos most often were the bits that I laughed at the most. Notably, The Maple Leafs announcers are played by Jim Jim Gaffigan and Stephen Colbert, and they brought down the house. I could have watched an entire movie with Colbert’s cracked out announcer baiting Jim Gaffigan, but hopefully there’s more footage that will be released on DVD.

Stephen Colbert as a hockey announcer?
Posted by: | CommentsWell, this came as a bit of a surprise to me. Entertainment Weekly has an item posted talking about the upcoming Mike Myers movie, The Love Guru, scenes from which recently screened at ShoWest. I didn’t think the trailers for this movie looked particularly funny, but I was planning on seeing it regardless, as I know John Oliver has a role in it and I’ve liked everything that he’s been involved with (of the stuff I’ve seen/read/heard, anyway).
But here’s the part of the EW.com item that surprised me (emphasis mine):
Mike Myers, Jessica Alba introduce ‘The Love Guru’ at ShoWest
Mar 12, 2008, 04:59 PM | by Joshua RichMike Myers and (a very pregnant) Jessica Alba made a surprise appearance at ShoWest in Las Vegas on Tuesday night to present clips from their summer comedy The Love Guru. After some cutesy banter in which Myers claimed to be Alba’s baby daddy, the pair introduced four scenes from the film, which appears to be a return to the live-action shtick that Myers perfected before he turned into a jolly green animated ogre several years ago … (Also popping up: Stephen Colbert as a hockey announcer and erstwhile “Mini-Me” Verne Troyer.)
. . .
Well, I think that now I really need to make sure I see this film. I mean, Stephen’s in it? As a hockey announcer? I only wish it could be for an OHL game featuring the Saginaw Spirit and his namesake, Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle!
