Hey, remember The Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation, who welcomed Stephen to Philly in such fine style? Stephen filmed a video on their behalf for National Tourism Week:

Lessons from Philadelphia

A few more parting thoughts from Philly, courtesy of Philadelphia Weekly:

What the Primary Taught Us
by Tim Whitaker

Hillary lived in Scranton as a little girl … as a little girl … as a little girl … as a little girl.

When describing Philadelphia politics, the out-of-town media will always mention the time Santa Claus was hit by a snowball at an Eagles game.

The same out-of-town media will also note with derision that “street money” is one of Philadelphia’s oldest political traditions.

It’s clear now, thanks to Colbert, that the Ben Franklin creep has become our unofficial mascot.

. . .

All it took was watching Larry King interview Stephen Colbert to know the CNN host is now officially one can short of a six-pack.

. . .

The “Ben Franklin creep”? Ouch! The linked article also chimes in on some of Stephen’s other Pennsylvanian guests, but I’ll admit it, the real reason I blogged this article is because I wanted an excuse to use this photo that Jennie sent me earlier; it totally cracks me up:

Thanks, Jennie!

Sounds like someone in Philly is just a little bit sick of the cheesesteak angle on Phildelphia stories. From Philadelphia Weekly:

Comedy Show On (No Way!) Cheesesteaks

Stephen Colbert - TCR screencap from Philadelphia WeeklyHey, guess what? A comedy show came to Philadelphia for a week, and while it was here filmed a little bit about cheesesteaks. Yes, I”m pretty shocked as well, since nobody who ever comes to Philadelphia ever mentions cheesesteaks.

. . .

Despite all that, it’s still pretty funny.

Full post and video available here

I can kind of sympathize with the poster’s perspective; I’m sure the stereotypes do get old. That said, I’m also glad he conceded that the segment was actually funny. Otherwise, I would have suspected that he was just retaliating after discovering that Stephen only considered Philly a one-week stand.

Just a few words from Senator Clinton, from People’s “Monsters and Critics”:

Hillary Clinton talks about the road to Pennsylvania
By M&C People Apr 21, 2008, 3:26 GMT

. . .

Clinton spoke of her appearance on “The Colbert Report.” “It was fun…When you’re in a serious campaign, you’re talking about what you’re doing for the economy and Iraq. It’s usually pretty sober so it’s fun to take a break and do something silly and that was for me, a lot of laughs.”

Clinton told Extra that even though John Edwards was backstage, there was no political talk, she explained, “We just caught up with each other. I’ve known John for a long time..He looks great. Elizabeth [Edwards, wife] is doing well.”

I know we’re all eagerly awaiting the full Episode Guide from this exceptional show, but I just *had* to get this segment posted before much more time had passed. John Edwards hit his segment out of the park last night, and I’ve got nothing but love for it. So without further ado, The EdWØRDs:

The Ed Words – Valued Voter: In considering who gets his vote, John Edwards is concerned about more than receiving several jet skis for his family — he’d also like to be a spy.

Ha ha! I get no end of amusement out of this taping account from last night’s show. The author’s self-confessed cooler-than-thou “been there, done that” attitude is no match for Stephen Colbert’s love-junkie demand for constant adulation. Ha ha ha!

From the Philadelphia City Paper:

They Made Me Clap For Colbert!
By Patrick O’Rourke

The predominant feeling I noticed as the Wednesday taping of The Colbert Report approached wasn’t my enthusiasm, but the jealousy of those around me who hadn’t scurried to their computers within five minutes of the announcement that the show would be coming to Philadelphia. Jaded as I am, hopping to immediately for the tickets was so out of character, I convinced myself that I did it so I could take real fans to see the show. Me? I’m too cool to care.

. . .

When comic Joe [sic] Dominick warmed up the room, his line about Stephen feeding off the crowd didn’t faze me. If I sit on my hands, it won’t make a bit of difference. I’m just here to observe all of the sheeple following the stage manager’s choreography. “I’m going to count down from 10,” he said. “When I get to 3, I’ll start waving this paper in a circle. That’s when we need you to get loud.” Whatever.

Somewhere around 5 my resolve waned. At 4 I took a deep breath, and on 3 I yelled like the giddiest Hannah Montana fan. Screeched is more like it. I clapped till my hands hurt, and laughed louder on retakes than I did the first time I heard the joke. When I got home, I watched the broadcast with remote in hand. “Look, honey,” I said to my wife, freezing the picture. “See the guy in the red shirt… see that shapeless lump next to him? That’s me!” I played back Ralph Archbold’s introduction twice so I could hear my corny cries of “Huzzah!” as the applause died down.

So now you know I’m completely in the tank for Colbert.

. . .

Indeed, sir. Do jump in, the water’s fine.

EDITED TO ADD: Showing himself to be a true it-getter, the author of this article expresses his apologies to Pete Dominick for erroneously calling him “Joe” (see comments). Nicely played!

We’re going to be spoiled if this keeps up. TV Squad’s Annie Wu joins our very own mrtigger001 in posting fabulous taping reports from Stephen’s delightful Philadelphia road trip. The following is her account from Monday’s show:

The Colbert Report in Philadelphia: Annie’s adventure – VIDEOS
Posted Apr 17th 2008 1:26PM by Annie Wu

Back on the night that Stephen Colbert announced that he’d be hitting Philadelphia, taking the show on the road for the first time, I had decided to go to bed early and just catch the rerun in the morning. My friend called me just as I began to doze off and immediately told me that she had gotten tickets for us to see Colbert in Philadelphia. I had no idea what the hell she was talking about, so when I hung up, I just shrugged it off as a late-night half-dream. The next morning, I watched the episode and it finally made sense: We were about to go on another Colbert Report adventure.

Just another photo from Stephen Colbert’s venture into the City of Brotherly Love Crunch:

There’s a story at HotelChatter.com with a bit more; it’s another account of the party we mentioned here (and here) yesterday, courtesy of the good folks at The Greater Philadelphia Marketing Tourism Corporation.

Stephen’s been generous with his time this week, that’s for certain. It’s a little overwhelming just trying to blog all these radio and other show-related appearances; I can’t imagine living them all!
