I love it when random Stephen Colbert footage from years ago pops up on “the internets”. Today’s installment comes from someone who was evidently with MediaBureau.com, talking to Stephen outside of the Republican National Convention in 2000.

Note: I would love a Mr. Noblet mug. Seriously.

Nice! Props to DB for pointing out that Rolling Stone, in addition to releasing a Q&A teaser and cover shot, also did a walkthrough of Stephen’s pre-Report days.

Before Stephen Colbert was a beloved political satirist and Peabody-winning grizzly bear detractor, he was an actor and comedian shuffling his way through various sketch shows and under-the-radar cameos. His stoic deadpan and occasional bouts of bluster were already present in the roles he would take on before The Colbert Report premiered in 2005, revealing an actor with Hartman-esque range aching for a breakout role. Rolling Stone takes a look back at the pre-fame Colbert with some classic clips waiting to be dredged up for his next Green Screen Challenge.

Nice job, Rolling Stone. You missed a few clips (that one from Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn is hard to get hold of, and I suppose Bewitched should have been included if The Great New Wonderful was), but this is pretty comprehensive. I kind of wish they’d linked Stephen’s “real newsman” Good Morning America report, though — it’s so funny watching him trying to be serious.

Okay, kiddos, we’ve only got 20 minutes until the television premiere of the ‘Strangers With Candy’ movie, at 11p EST on Comedy Central. And No Fact Zone has set up a chat room for everyone to come and chat as they watch the movie. We can talk about Chuck Noblet’s adorkable outfits, the goofiness of Geoffrey in a towel, the shininess of Onyx Blackman’s head, and of course, the fabulous Jerri Blank.

Since all of you Colbert fans have no “Colbert Report” to watch this week, I highly suggest you get caught up on “Strangers With Candy” on Hulu, which is features the entire series on their site. But make sure you also set your TiVo to record the movie version of the television show, being featured on Comedy Central on Saturday, June 13 at 11:00 p.m. Here’s a little bit about the movie, from the Comedy Central press page:

NEW YORK, May 26, 2009 — COMEDY CENTRAL brings viewers the Network Television Premiere of the hit film based on COMEDY CENTRAL’s cult classic series, “Strangers with Candy,” starring Amy Sedaris, Stephen Colbert, Matthew Broderick and Paul Dinello, Saturday, June 13 at 11:00 p.m.

In this prequel to the COMEDY CENTRAL television series, Jerri Blank (Sedaris) returns home after 32 years of drugs, prostitution and prison. It’s up to Blank to pull her father out of his stress-induced coma by going back to high school and winning the science fair – but even though it’s her second time around, life as a teenager hasn’t gotten any easier. Get ready for a quirky and twisted comedy like no other!

Yay! Now the entire 30-season run of Comedy Central’s “Strangers With Candy” is available for Hulu! You now officially have no excuse for not watching! Unless you’re not in the US and are blocked from the videos, of course.

Here’s the final episode from the series, featuring Winona Ryder as the Fran, the coolest kid in school, and Paul Rudd as Brent, the aloof cool guy.

Big thanks to all who sent me e-mails about this!

If you’re in the Chicago area, I highly recommend you make yourself over to the iO Chicago Theater for Tim Meadow’s improv show ‘Uncle’s Brother’ tomorrow. ‘Strangers With Candy’ principal Greg Holliman (Onyx Blackman) will be a featured performer on the stage, which makes this a must-see show. Greg and Tim have been friends since their days in the touring company of the famed Second City comedy troupe in Chicago. The show plays on Sunday, March 1st at 10:30 PM in the Del Close Theater – tickets are $10.

If you’re not able to make it to the show but are jonesing for some Meadows and Hollimon, enjoy their performances in ‘Let Freedom Ring’, from Season 1 of ‘Strangers With Candy’.

For those of you who have already blown through Season 1 of ‘Strangers With Candy’ on Hulu.com, now you have Season 2 on Hulu to view and enjoy! I’m a huge fan of Season 2, as it contains my very favorite episodes, ‘Hit and Run’, and ‘The Blank Stare [Parts 1 and 2]‘. I’ve embedded ‘Hit and Run’ for your enjoyment – it was the first show of ‘Strangers With Candy’ that I ever saw, and it’s still my favorite to this day. Chuck pretty much openly weeps the entire episode, and the flip that Jerri sports is my very favorite Jerri hair ever.

Strangers With CandyIf you’re a serious Stephen Colbert fan (and who among us isn’t, really?), you need to familiarize yourself with some of his earlier work. “Strangers With Candy” is a series he created in the late 1990’s with his cohorts from Second City, Paul Dinello, Amy Sedaris and Mitch Rouse. Their parody of those wonderful After School Specials in the 80’s ran for three seasons, and the 30 episodes were instant comedy classics. The humor doesn’t get much darker than this, and the laughs are long and plentiful.

If you haven’t had a chance to watch the DVD’s of the series (the entire series of which is available in a unique but frustrating parody of the After School Special DVD packaging), you now have a chance to see Season 1 on the internet. Hulu has just made the first season of ‘Strangers With Candy’ available online! From the wonderful “Bogie Nights” with its cringeworthy makeout scene to the laying down the foundation of Chuck and Geoffrey’s “friendship” in “A Burden’s Burden”, each one of this season’s shows brings a funny and unique perspective to the Flatpoint High gang.

For your viewing enjoyment, here’s my favorite episode from Season 1, Dreams on the Rocks. I really feel it is one of the best parodies of the After School Special genre. Stephen says in the commentary on the DVD that there were story lines and scenes in this episode that were virtually lifted from a real After School special, like when Jeri’s friend tells her about his “hysterical” parents who drink too much. I also think the all-white cast of “Raisin in the Sun” is quite amusing.
