Archive for Rory Albanese

Am I the only one completely baffled by the fact that January has gone by in the blink of an eye and that we’re already steam rolling straight through February? February of course, can mean only one thing – Vancouver!! But while Stephen is off polishing his skates in preparation for the Winter Olympics his friends will be back in the good old US of A working on their latest new projects.

Hey, kids! The Paley Center has posted clips from last year’s talk with The Daily Show writers and, if you’ve got the time, they’re funny and illuminating viewing. Watch Miles Kahn, Wyatt Cenac, John Oliver, Rob Kutner, Steve Bodow, DJ Javerbaum, Rory Albanese, JR Havlan, Adam Lowitt and more. I can’t embed the clips, but click on the links or image below to go to the Paley Center’s YouTube channel (where you can also find clips from the hilarious 2002 Daily Show writers’ Paley Center chat). You’ll be glad you did, really!

thumb_6degreesHello, boys and girls, and welcome to another edition of “funny people out there giving us lots to blog about”!

Let’s start with the Jon Stewart bit, shall we? Most of us know Jon as the host of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, but you’d be wrong if you thought that meant he had any real power or clout. Don’t believe me? Watch the clip below featuring Daily Show execs Josh Lieb and Rory Albanese. It’s an advertisement for Josh’s new book (I Am a Genius of Unspeakable Evil and I Want to Be Your Class President), but it’s also quite a revelation, where Jon’s duties are concerned.

Sounds like a great book, Mr. Lieb!

There’s a lot more to cover, both about Jon and others, so click past the fold to see more.

Ahhh, Zoners! I got to see John Oliver performing a while ago at Comix! Our friends over at the Daily Show really are an entertaining bunch. Hopefully some of this info will allow you to have similarly joyful experiences!

Wyatt Cenac (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) and Larry Wilmore (Contributor, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

  • Wyatt and Larry will be appearing a the comedy club Comix in NYC on Friday, August 21, and Saturday, August 22 at 8 PM and 10:30 PM on both nights. For more information and to purchase tickets, you can go here. I was able to see Wyatt when I went to TDS & Friends last year, and I assure you that he is marvelous. I’m sure, based on Larry’s appearances on TDS, it’s not hard to imagine his stand-up being wonderful as well. If you can get to this show, count me as jealous!
  • For those on the west coast hoping to catch Wyatt sometime, you should know that he’ll be appearing at the Bumbershoot 2009 in Seattle on Saturday, September 5th from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM and Sunday, September 6th from 7:15 to 8:15, both at the Comedy Stage North . Also performing with him during that time will be Tommy Johnagin and Maria Bamford. To see the entire comedy line up for the festival and easily click to a page about tickets, you can go here.
  • Also pertaining to Wyatt, here is a piece form Variety which gives a brief overview of how he ended up with his current success. I am always amazed with how quickly he went from being in serious trouble to being a full-fledged correspondent at TDS! (h/t: MsI)

Samantha Bee (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)

  • Sam Bee will be appearing in one of the three rotating five-member casts of Love, Loss, and What I Wore, a show which will be running in the off-Broadway Westlake Theatre this fall. Although it isn’t current possible to know when she will appear, and perhaps it never will be, it sounds like there are a lot of other great people in the show as well. The most comprehensive information for now is at Broadway.com, and the show will eventually have a site here.

Jason Jones (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)

  • All of you who have been watching the show lately will surely remember Jason Jones’s trip to Alaska, where he attended Sarah Palin’s resignation speech and gave the media a serious talking-to. Twitter user orbitaldiamonds was also in present, and she has posted some pictures of Jason there in her blog. They are spread over two posts, here and here. (h/t: Jenny)

John Oliver (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) and Rory Albanese (Executive Producer, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)

  • Exciting news for both John and Rory, as they have have signed a blind script deal with Paramount. As we’re all part of this blindness (we don’t know what’s being written until it’s finished) there’s not much more to say about that besides to hope that it turns out well! This article, which has quotes from both John and Rory about the deal, also says that the two will also form a production venture. (h/t: MsI)
  • You’ll also remember that a previous Six Degrees post mentioned that John would be appearing int he new NBC series Community. The pilot for this how is now available to be viewed if you become a “fan” of the show on Facebook. Here is the Facebook page where info for becoming a fan and watching the pilot can be found. I haven’t done either of those things yet, but if you have, you should compare impressions in the comments!

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

  • I’m sure some of you have already seen this piece in the New Yorker: Why Neoconservative Pundits Love Jon Stewart. Whether or not you agree with the perspective they share, it’s always interesting to hear from the perspective of people who decide it’s worth it to appear on The Daily Show.

Man, it seems that the folks at The Daily Show and The Colbert Report (current and alumni) have all come back from hiatus hell bent on wearing me out!! I’m not complaining, I love that they all have so much going on, but keeping tabs on them all is quite the exercise. Soooo … away we go!

Rachel Axler (writer, The Daily Show)

  • Congratulations to Rachel Axler and the rest of the Daily Show’s writing team for their Emmy nomination! They work hard for their show, and I hope they’re all celebrating the nom.

Sadly, a glance over the list of nominated writers reminds me, once again, that there’s a dearth of female writers on the shows in their category (Variety, Music or Comedy Program), and that number is dropping still further. According to Videogum, Rachel will be leaving The Daily Show soon, leaving TDS with … zero women writers. I know they’ll pick the best possible talent to try to fill Rachel’s shoes, but I must admit that I’m rather fervently hoping that their new hire is a woman. Still, it’s got to be exciting for Rachel to be heading for a spot on the writing staff of the spinoff from The Office, and we wish her well.

Laura Krafft and Peter Grosz (former and current writers, respectively, The Colbert Report)

  • Speaking of former (female!) writers, New Yorkers can catch Laura Krafft performing this weekend with Peter Grosz and the hilarious David Rakoff at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in “Three-Piece!” this Saturday. The UCBT website describes the show as an “improvised monologue in three parts”; check out ticketing information here.

Rob and Nate Corddry (former correspondents, The Daily Show)

Rob Kutner, John Oliver, Wyatt Cenac, Rob Riggle, Rory Albanese, Adam Lowitt (writers, correspondents and producers, The Daily Show)

  • For fun with some of the writers and correspondents who are still with The Daily Show, pop by the “Tell Your Friends” shows at the Lolita Bar. Rob Kutner will be appearing there on Monday, July 21st and both John Oliver and Wyatt Cenac will be on hand for the July 28th show. Further information can be found here.
  • Rory Albanese (a.k.a. The Bugle’s “American”) hosts another installment of “An Evening with ‘The Daily Show’ & Friends” at Comix on July 21st. He’ll be joined by John Oliver, Rob Riggle, Wyatt Cenac, Adam Lowitt and more! Get further info on the show here.
  • Here’s another one for Wyatt: a “Weezy and The Swish” podcast from earlier this month. I don’t know why, but his passive-agressive tone as regards the hosts (who talked too much, IMO) really cracked me up. Good stuff!

Samantha Bee (correspondent, The Daily Show)

  • For further proof that The Daily Show is rewarding not only for those who leave but for those who stay, as well, check out Sam Bee’s quote in Canada’s National Post: “I’m going to be the old battle-axe. They may have to pry my cold dead hands off the microphone.” Nice to hear that she’s going to be sticking around!

As always, please check with the venues themselves to confirm the lineups, and feel free to add updates and corrections in the comments.
