G’day Zoners, I hope you’ve all been enjoying the Winter Olympics. I for one have become obsessed with all things ice related – Speed Skating, Figure Skating, Curling and Ice Hockey. A great obsession to have smack bang in the middle of an Australian summer. I of course blame Stephen for my new found love of winter sports. For those of you able to tear yourselves away from all things ice and snow, Stephen’s friends have some exciting upcoming projects for you to check out.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson

Conan O’Brien

  • Exciting news for all Coco fans, courtesy of The New York Times:

Representatives of Mr. O’Brien, the former host of “The Tonight Show” on NBC, confirmed Friday that plans are in the works to book what is being called “a revue” starring Mr. O’Brien in theaters in major cities from California to New York, and perhaps parts further east and west–and maybe north.

After exploring the degree of interest with some locations, Mr. O’Brien’s team has received “enormous interest from all over,” said one of his representatives, who asked not to be identified because the plans are not yet ready to announce. “We’ve heard from the U.K., Scandinavia, Australia, Toronto, everywhere; it’s been incredible.”

Ugh, the snow and wind continue to swirl here in my neck of the woods (darn you, unnamed grocery store, for continually canceling my deliveries!), and I’m having weird flashbacks to my childhood in the Upper Midwest. In an attempt to keep my mind in the present, how about some updates on some of our friends at The Daily Show and Colbert Report?

Our friends over at PBS have released another teaser ad for Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Pluto Files, which will feature any number of our favorite people (like Stephen Colbert!) when it airs. Here’s a fun snippet with Brian Williams and some guy with a little cable show, Jon Stewart.

Mr. Stewart is keeping himself busy, performing stand-up gig in Vegas over the Super Bowl weekend. The Las Vegas Review Journal featured a pretty cool article on Jon to coincide with the gig, and it’s definitely worth a read. The story he told about bombing while opening for Sheena Easton (“[S]he poked her head in my dressing room and said (he mimics her Scottish accent), ‘Don’t worry, Jon. Tomorrow is another day.’”) … ouch!

Am I the only one completely baffled by the fact that January has gone by in the blink of an eye and that we’re already steam rolling straight through February? February of course, can mean only one thing – Vancouver!! But while Stephen is off polishing his skates in preparation for the Winter Olympics his friends will be back in the good old US of A working on their latest new projects.

Six Degrees: Daily Show Edition

Posted by: Tiger | Comments (8)

thumb_6degrees Although we haven’t seen them on The Daily Show for a while, there are some good opportunities here to catch up with all our favorite hosts and correspondents. And while we’re at it, we’ve got some things to anticipate in the future!

Jon Stewart (Host, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)

  • You probably all know by now that Jon had the privilege of introducing Bruce Springsteen at the most recent Kennedy Center Honors event, but this footage of the event is probably new to the Zoners here. From Crooks and Liars:

Read more about Rob Riggle, Samantha Bee and Jason Jones, Aasif Mandvi and John Oliver after the fold.

Good day Zoners! As always, the folks from the Daily Show are being funny and/or informative in so many other venues besides the familiar half-hour television show!

John Oliver (Correspondent, The Daily Show)

  • This Saturday, John headed out for some gigs in the southern and western parts of the United States. I do not know about the availability of tickets, but I note that he’ll be going multiple shows in a single night in some places, as well as staying for two or three nights in a row for others. Check out John’s MySpace page for time and location information regarding the shows that still remain. I hope some of you will be able to attend, because I am sure the shows will be great fun! Also, sometime this week, John will be a guest on the Regular Guys, which is the morning show for Atlanta Rock 100.5 FM. If you’re in the area but can’t get to show, you can at least turn on your radio!

Wyatt Cenac (Correspondent, The Daily Show) and Adam Lowitt (Producer, The Daily Show)

  • On June 1, Wyatt and Adam will be appearing in the regular stand-up show Tell Your Friends! in New York City. The link in the previous sentence will take you to Tell Your Friends!’s MySpace page, where you can get information regarding the location and information.

Jon Stewart (Host, The Daily Show) and Lewis Black (contributor, The Daily Show)

  • Although it won’t be on television for a while, it’s worth being excited about “The Naturalized,” a show about immigration that Jon is producing. It will appear on the History Channel later this year, and it will be two hours long! Lewis Black will also be working with the History Channel, as he does “Surviving the Holidays with Lewis Black,” which will air around the 2009 holiday season. Further information about both of these shows can be found here.

Rob Riggle (Former correspondent, The Daily Show)

  • Rob Riggle was recently featured in an episode of “Gary Unmarried” (Season 1, Episode 19), where he plays Gary’s half brother Mitch, who causes all sorts of hilarious havoc when he returns from serving his country in Iraq. You can watch the episode at CBS’s Site for Gary Unmarried here. (h/t Lisa)

Hello my dear Zoners! Let’s take a moment to see what those folks filling the half hour before the Report are up to. They have most certainly not been lazy sloths as of late!

Jon Stewart (host, The Daily Show)

  • Jon recently attended a bone marrow drive in Tribeca held in support of a 4-year-old boy who has leukemia. You can read an article and watch a video about it from news station WPIX here. It is heartening that so many people showed up to the drive, and although I have not yet joined the bone marrow registry myself, I’ll still plug it as something everyone should do. For more information about it, you can visit the National Marrow Donor Program website.

John Oliver (correspondent, The Daily Show)

  • In what seems to be quite exciting news, John has a role in a new NBC comedy called Community. It is about people studying at a community college, and from what I can infer from the video below, John seems to play some type of mentor or employee. But rather than taking my word for it, watch the video for yourself!

What do you think? Will you watch? I know some people seem to be fans of the other actors as well, so perhaps that makes it even more appealing for you. I will probably give it a shot, but I do not have a strong history of actually sticking with shows. I would be pleasantly surprised if I liked it enough to keep watching though!

Aasif Mandvi (correspondent, The Daily Show)

  • You probably remember hearing about the upcoming film The Proposal from its appearance in Monday’s Movies That Are Destroying America. However, if you can deal with the illegal immigrant angle that was so upsetting to Stephen, you can go see the film and spot Aasif in the role of Bob Thurber. I am not sure what the nature of this part will be, but if you are already interested, this could be just one more reason to head to the theater.

Rob Riggle (former correspondent, The Daily Show)

  • Rob guest-starred on the show Gary Unmarried on Wednesday night. He plays Gary’s half brother Mitch who is home from Afghanistan. It’s probably for the US only, but the full episode is online here on the CBS website.

Wyatt Cenac (correspondent, The Daily Show)

  • This isn’t a world I’m very familiar with, but it looks as though Wyatt has written a portion of a comic book. It is called Marvel Assistant-Sized Spectacular #2 The story he wrote is called “Citizen Cage.” I have been too intimidated by the local comic book shop to even look for Colbert materials, but if you enjoy the media, this could be worth looking into.

I’ve got to ease myself back into this blogging game; I’m sure there are any number of stories and blurbs that I’ve missed since I began my holiday break, so I’m going to have to ask you all to be patient with me as I try to catch up on the various gigs and goings on. Here are a few events and items that you might find interesting; as ever, please leave your additions and updates in the comments. Thanks!

Aasif Mandvi

  • Aasif will be hosting the Stand Up for Peace event (featuring comedians Dean Obeidallah, Scott Blakeman, Maysoon Zaid, Seth Herzog, and Jessi Klein) on January 6th at the Gotham Comedy Club. Click here for more details.

Rob Riggle

Laura Krafft

  • Catch one of our favorite writers of yesteryear (Laura Krafft!) performing in “Three Piece” at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater on Thursday, January 15th, and in the recurring “Let’s Have a Ball” show on Saturday nights.

Peter Grosz

  • New York City’s UCBT hosts another Colbert Report alumnus (Peter Grosz) in “2 Square“. See this improv show on Monday, January 19th and 26th.

John Oliver (and others!)

  • John will be appearing at the release party for Eugene Mirman’s The Will To Whatevs: A Guide To Modern Life on February 10th … and he’ll be joined by fellow Daily Show members John Hodgman and Kristen Schaal. Have I mentioned lately that I wish I lived in NYC?
  • If you’re not already listening to John’s delightful weekly podcast (The Bugle, with Andy Zaltzman), then I’m going to have to take this moment to be horribly disappointed in you, as I’ve mentioned it several times over in these Six Degrees posts. I’m giving the podcast another plug today because John mentioned Stephen in the last episode of The Bugle (approx. 15:45 minutes into the episode), in a reference to The Love Guru that made me giggle like a preteen girl.

Andy quoted George W. Bush as saying, “What matters to me is that I didn’t compromise my soul to be a popular guy,” which caused John and Andy to speculate on what they have compromised their respective souls for … I think I may leave it at that and have you go listen for yourselves. You can download the podcast for free on iTunes (the episode in question is “Episode 57 – Hats off to Obama, shoes off for Bush”), or you can go through the Times Online page. I’d recommend the link even for those of you who normally listen via iTunes, since the linked page includes an utterly magnificent photo of John “throwing shapes” at Andy’s wedding to the dulcet strains of “The Voice”. Heaven help us! (P.S. Congratulations on successfully acting as midwife for the birth of your son, Andy!)

Amy Sedaris

  • The always delightful Amy Sedaris had an author event at a Borders bookstore in New York on December 16th, and there’s some footage of it on YouTube for all of us to enjoy. Here’s Part One (of two):

And here’s the link to the second part. Thanks for the tip, Jennie!
