Six Degrees: Kiss Me I’m Irish Edition.

Posted by: Katt | Comments (10)

Ok, so I lied. I’m not actually Irish, I’m Australian but you can still kiss me and we drink just as much … if not more. I hope you’ve all recovered from good ol’ St. Patty’s Day and the festivities that ensured. Mine was a rather dismal day, I didn’t touch a drop of drink, there were no celebrations at Uni and I only wore green by accident. So if you’re like me and have had a boring day/week I hope the activities of Stephen’s friends and colleagues puts a smile on your dial.

Amy Sedaris

  • You can pre-order your copy of Amy’s new book “Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People” from Amazon which is due for release on 2 November, 2010.

    Product Description:
America’s most delightfully unconventional hostess and the bestselling author of I Like You delivers a new book that will forever change the world of crafting. According to Amy Sedaris, it’s often been said that ugly people craft and attractive people have sex. In her new book, SIMPLE TIMES, she sets the record straight. Demonstrating that crafting is one of life’s more pleasurable and constructive leisure activities, Sedaris shows that anyone with a couple of hours to kill and access to pipe cleaners can join the elite society of crafters.

Here’s some awesome news for all you comedy fans in Chicago: the new list of confirmed attendees for the 50th Anniversary festivities now includes fan favorites Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell!

Old school Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert - Second City photos

From the Chicago Tribune:

Second City confirms Colbert, Carell, Belushi, Wendt, Dratch, Garlin, Vardalos, many others
Second City is later today releasing the line-up for its big 50th-anniversary mainstage show at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12. Entitled “The Second City Alumnae: For One Night Only,” the show will be staged in both of Second City’s theaters.

Here’s the latest line-up of names. It’s quite a list:

Scott Adsit, Jim Belushi, Danny Breen, Frank Caeti, Larry Joe Campbell, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Dan Castellaneta, Kevin Dorff, Robin Duke, Brian Gallivan, Martin Garcia, Jeff Garlin, Ian Gomez, Peter Grosz, Mike Hagerty, Isabella Hoffman, Bruce Jarchow, Fred Kaz, Tim Kazurinsky, Keegan Michael Key, Richard Kind, Robert Klein, David Koechner, Mina Kolb, Bob Martin, Jack McBrayer, Susan Messing, Colin Mochrie, Maribeth Monroe, Jane Morris, Bob Odenkirk, David Pasquesi, Harold Ramis, David Rasche, Horatio Sanz, Jim Staahl, Betty Thomas, Nia Vardalos, George Wendt, Fred Willard.

This is only a partial list of performers for what’s certainly going to be one of the toughest tickets of the year in Chicago. Tickets, which are $125, go on sale Thursday.

There is only one show open to the public–the late-night slot is going to be a private, alumnae-performing-for-alumnae event. But there are numerous panels and other events open to the public.

. . .

Colbert, a recent addition to the weekend, will now appear at the recently announced panel dedicated to his show. (Dec. 12 at 10 a.m).

It’s great to see so many familiar names in there! Steve Carell, Peter Grosz, David Pasquesi … if you’re in Chicago on that day, this definitely sounds like the place to be.

Keep your eyes on the Second City site for more information.

EDITED TO ADD: Here’s a little more information on the panel discussion. Fellow Colbert Report writers and Second City alumni Peter Gwinn and Tom Purcell will also be participating!

The best darned hour on TV
You’re not going to want to miss this one, New Yorkers! Writers and correspondents from The Daily Show and The Colbert Report will once again be teaming up to provide an evening of improv for the Del Close Marathon.

The Daily Show/Colbert Report Improv Jam

What:
Your favorite writers and correspondents from The Daily Show w/Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report join together for a one-time-only improv show.

Who:
Peter Gwinn, Ed Helms, Laura Krafft, Rob Riggle, more!!

Where and When:
Sat 8:30 pm at FIT Kate Murphy Ampitheatre (Buy tickets)

Very nice! I wonder who the “more” will be? John Oliver and Wyatt Cenac both have improv backgrounds, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see (Peter Grosz does, too, but I think he’ll still be at the DC Comedyfest at that point). But hey, look at that list already, what’s not to like?

I hope at least a few people here get to go! (Why, oh why, did that have to be during the weekend I’m moving?)

From WNYC (New York Public Radio):

Writers’ Guild Leadership Backs Contract Deal
WNYC Newsroom

NEW YORK, NY February 10, 2008 —Writers for New York-based television shows could be back to work by Wednesday. Leaders of the Writers Guild of America decided today to recommend a proposed three-year contract to union members and ask them to approve a quick end to the walkout, which has dragged on for more than three months.

REPORTER: Membership meetings will be held Tuesday in New York and Los Angeles. The agreement sets flat fees and residuals for material streamed or downloaded on the Internet, a central demand of the union. By year 3 of the contract, writers would earn 2 percent of the revenues earned from TV clips played online. According to Colbert Report writer Peter Guinn [sic], that’s a big improvement over existing terms, which don’t provide any such earnings.

GWINN: We’re talking about stuff on the Internet, that’s a lot easier to track. By the time the next contract rolls around, we’ll have a much better understanding of people’s viewing habits. So maybe that number’s unfair but we’ll know better in 3 years when the next contract comes up.

Oh, that crazy “McLaughin’ Group“! From the New York Times:

Comedy Stop: Cold Turkey Wednesday
By The McLaughin’ Group

The first 24 post-Super-Tuesday hours are the hardest.

. . .

11:00 a.m.: I’ve got the shakes. The kind that can only be calmed by Anderson Cooper explaining a pie chart. Why doesn’t that come in a patch?

11:25 a.m.: Accidentally call wife “Hillary.” Slapped across face.

11:40 p.m.: Order “The Passion of the Christ” from Netflix in order to court evangelical vote.

12:15 p.m.: Accidentally call wife “Mitt.” Hit over the head with chair. I don’t blame her.

1:00 p.m.: Make it up to wife with surprise “red and blue foods” lunch: beets and some moldy leftover I found in the back of the fridge.

3:13 p.m.: Spent two solid hours at HotOrNot.com just for something to vote on. Hair of the dog.

. . .

8:00 p.m.: Read daughter bedtime story. Dr. Seuss’s “One Fish, Two Fish, Red State, Blue State.” Why is she crying?

9:30 p.m.: Walt Conroy calls. Wants my vote for president of the Neighborhood Watch Association. Not without Ted Kennedy’s endorsement, pal.

11:15 p.m.: Attempt role play with wife in bed. She refuses to be Chris Matthews. My Matthews Meter is at an all-time low.

11:35 p.m.: Finally admit I need help. I dial 911, but the numerals remind me of failed Giuliani campaign. The sobs come fast and hard.

. . .

Full day’s schedule available here

Since I failed to notice the McLaughin’ Group’s suggested alternatives for “Super Tuesday”, here’s a link to that one, too: Comedy Stop: Super Tuesday? It’s All About the Name. I think my fave might be, “Tuesday in the Park with George: All balloting takes place in a beautiful park, while Mandy Patinkin sings about his ambivalence.”

Funny stuff, guys! We hope to see you all back with the show very soon …

Thought I’d try to post a few notices and/or reminders of some upcoming shows involving Daily Show and Colbert Report personnel, just in case anyone lives in the general vicinity and is looking for some entertainment.

Upright Citizens Brigade Theater

  • Ben Karlin presents Things I’ve Learned From Women Who’ve Dumped Me…LIVE! on February 7th, 13th, 21st and 28th. The shows feature some highly cool guests like David Rees, Fountains of Wayne, Will Forte and John Oliver (just to name a few). Advance tickets have already sold out, but there will be standby lines at each performance. More information here — I wonder who the “surprise guests” will be!
  • Let’s Have a Ball, featuring Colbert Report writers Peter Gwinn and Laura Krafft, is running again on Saturday nights in February. Ticket information is here.
  • ASSSSCAT 3000 continues to run on Sunday evenings, and the show features an ever-changing performer lineup that has included stalwarts of Saturday Night Live, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, etc. Vice Magazine did a cool interview with Amy Poehler, John Lutz, and Jack McBrayer recently (and you’ll see a familiar face in one of the photos on the first page, if you know your Colbert writers); read it here. If this sounds like your cuppa (and why wouldn’t it?), ticket info for ASSSSCAT 3000 is here.

Comix

  • Emmy winning Daily Show Producer Rory Albanese presents Friends, Acquaintances and Colleagues on February 25th. The current lineup features Elliott Kalan (producer, The Daily Show), Rich Blomquist (writer, The Daily Show), Rob Riggle (correspondent, The Daily Show) and more. Ticket info is here.
  • Sweet Comix Valentine, the show set for February 14th (duh), lists Colbert Report warm-up comedian Pete Dominick as one of the evening’s performers. Read more here.

Shows at other venues

  • Strike Night at Crash Mansion is still going on, with a new show scheduled for Monday, February 11th. Past performances have featured some of our faves from Comedy Central, so it’s a fair bet that the show is going to be pants-peeingly funny. I haven’t found who’s scheduled for that evening, but calling (212) 777-7447 for tickets would be a good idea; the shows have a tendency to sell out. Or you can try the Crash Mansion website here.
  • John Oliver has been driving me crazy lately by his evident inability to update his gig list, but a flurry of his upcoming appearances found their way into my inbox recently. Which is good for any of you who can make it to one of these, because John is utterly brilliant live. Trust me on this one.
    • Saturday, February 9th: John brings “his unique British humor to the UMass Dartmouth Main Auditorium stage”. The show (which also features Daily Show producer Rory Albanese) starts at 7:30 pm; there’s more information available here.
    • Tuesday, February 12th: Prepare for “An intimate encounter with intelligent and alternative comedy” at the Cornelia Street Cafe (NYC). John headlines the show, which will also feature Liam McEneaney, Bryan Tucker, Keith Farnan, Lee Camp and Steve Rosso. More info here.
    • Monday, February 18th: John takes the stage at the Loretto-Hilton Center to perform for the students and community at Webster University (St. Louis, MO). Ticket info is here, and seriously? You get in FREE with a Webster ID? Man, that’s almost criminal!

I can’t make it to any of these (sigh — how ’bout you do a show in DC some evening, guys?), so somebody out there had better find this information useful. Have a great time!

Edited to add: evilsouffle just pointed me to another upcoming John Oliver gig; he’ll be in Charlottesville to perform at UVA on February 15th (click here for details). Thanks for the heads up!
