Archive for Pete Dominick

Howdy, cats and kittens. Since you’ve requested it, and we like to accommodate people (when we can), here’s a quick roundup of the activities of some of Stephen’s friends and colleagues.

  • I’m sure none of us saw it because we were busy watching Stephen and R.E.M., but TDS alum and Second City co-hort Steve Carell was on Leno last night. If you want to catch up with his interview, you can watch it here.
  • We already blogged about Jon Stewart’s being honored by the USO; here’s a little more on the awards ceremony.
  • Daily Show Resident Expert (and general funnyman) John Hodgman continues his association with McSweeney’s, this time penning the introduction to The McSweeney’s Joke Book of Book Jokes. You can also catch “Hodgie” in a featurette included on the DVD of Judd Apatow’s Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.
  • Daily Show writer Josh Lieb has sold his book I Am a Genius of Unspeakable Evil and I Want to Be Your Class President to Warner Bros. The Hollywood Reporter has a few more details on the upcoming adaptation here.
  • Colbert Report scribe Laura Krafft continues to perform in the “Let’s Have a Ball” shows at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater. The show runs on Saturdays; dates and ticket information are here.
  • Rory Albanese (producer, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) is hosting another “Friends, Acquaintances and Colleagues” gig at Comix on April 10th. The guest list this time includes a couple of familiar names: John Hodgman and Pete Dominick!
  • Correspondent extraordinaire (and recent Colbert Report stowaway) John Oliver has quite a bit going on. As an initial matter, I want to give him all sorts of virtual lovin’ because he’s finally updated his gig list; you can access it from here for some upcoming gigs. Thanks, man! There are a few more odds and ends to add, though:
    • John is also scheduled to perform in “Tell Your Friends” at the Lolita Bar on April 14th (thanks for the tip, Scorpioprodigy!). Info on the show is here.
    • You can also catch John performing at the AIDS Walk NY Benefit on May 16th; ticket info is here. You know how we adore guys who support good causes … !
    • This one’s a couple of weeks old, but I don’t think I blogged it here at the time: John did a radio interview prior to his Denver shows (it’s the first 15-20 minutes); it’s every bit as amusing as you’d expect.

You may have seen some of these already (especially if you regularly check out the Comedy Central Insider), but these links should all be reasonably current. As ever, we ask you to remember to please confirm any appearances with the venues; this info was gathered from general ‘net postings, not from the individuals, themselves. Additional corrections or tips are welcome in the comments; please do check them out, should I be unable to keep the post updated.

If you’ve read this far, here’s a little bonus. I’m not going to make a habit of blogging about Stephen’s former guests, but because I really loved his appearance and because the Martin Luther King, Jr. retrospectives are timely, here’s a lovely John Legend performance of the classic U2 tribute to Dr. King, “Pride (In the Name of Love)” — hope you have the time to give it a listen!

Heroes GBL85 and dtrainpdx posted links to the interview here and here already; I haven’t been able to test the links because my work computer doesn’t have the right software (oops), but having caught the interview during the broadcast, I will say that it’s worth a listen. Thanks, heroes!

Warning: the language you are about to hear includes words that this blog would spell with asterisks and other symbols. In other words, there’s some “adult” language in the interview, so plan your listening options accordingly.

Okay, bearing in mind that I just finished listening to this not long ago, here are a few of my impressions (if anyone cares):

  • It always cracks me up when Stephen (not “Stephen”) lets his dirty mind come out of his mouth. And the fact that he (a) obviously has quite the dirty mind but (b) just as obviously isn’t *totally* comfortable sharing that aloud makes for an hilarious juxtaposition.
  • It was interesting hearing him talk about the strike, and I think it’s very cool that Allison can tell when Stephen agrees with “Stephen”.
  • How fascinating to hear that the line between Stephen and “Stephen” was blurring during the Presidential campaign! In retrospect, I can kind of see that, judging by some of the footage of his activities in South Carolina from that period.
  • The part of the interview that struck me most was when he was once again discussing why he doesn’t want his children to watch his show (i.e. because he doesn’t want them to confuse his off-camera emotional sincerity with his performance-based ’sincerity’). Not actually knowing Stephen in real life, I can only state my opinion: out of character Stephen is worlds away from “Stephen”. As much as I enjoy “Stephen”, it’s the out of character guy that makes the show so compelling. I was talking to Lisa See once (after she’d been on the BookExpo panel with him), and we agreed perfectly — each of us having only spoken with Stephen for a matter of minutes — that he was one of the kindest human beings we’d ever met. Again, it’s just my opinion, but I don’t think anyone would mistake the character for the man.

Thanks to everyone involved (Stephen, Pete and our download gurus) for bringing us this great interview!

Thought I’d try to post a few notices and/or reminders of some upcoming shows involving Daily Show and Colbert Report personnel, just in case anyone lives in the general vicinity and is looking for some entertainment.

Upright Citizens Brigade Theater

  • Ben Karlin presents Things I’ve Learned From Women Who’ve Dumped Me…LIVE! on February 7th, 13th, 21st and 28th. The shows feature some highly cool guests like David Rees, Fountains of Wayne, Will Forte and John Oliver (just to name a few). Advance tickets have already sold out, but there will be standby lines at each performance. More information here — I wonder who the “surprise guests” will be!
  • Let’s Have a Ball, featuring Colbert Report writers Peter Gwinn and Laura Krafft, is running again on Saturday nights in February. Ticket information is here.
  • ASSSSCAT 3000 continues to run on Sunday evenings, and the show features an ever-changing performer lineup that has included stalwarts of Saturday Night Live, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, etc. Vice Magazine did a cool interview with Amy Poehler, John Lutz, and Jack McBrayer recently (and you’ll see a familiar face in one of the photos on the first page, if you know your Colbert writers); read it here. If this sounds like your cuppa (and why wouldn’t it?), ticket info for ASSSSCAT 3000 is here.

Comix

  • Emmy winning Daily Show Producer Rory Albanese presents Friends, Acquaintances and Colleagues on February 25th. The current lineup features Elliott Kalan (producer, The Daily Show), Rich Blomquist (writer, The Daily Show), Rob Riggle (correspondent, The Daily Show) and more. Ticket info is here.
  • Sweet Comix Valentine, the show set for February 14th (duh), lists Colbert Report warm-up comedian Pete Dominick as one of the evening’s performers. Read more here.

Shows at other venues

  • Strike Night at Crash Mansion is still going on, with a new show scheduled for Monday, February 11th. Past performances have featured some of our faves from Comedy Central, so it’s a fair bet that the show is going to be pants-peeingly funny. I haven’t found who’s scheduled for that evening, but calling (212) 777-7447 for tickets would be a good idea; the shows have a tendency to sell out. Or you can try the Crash Mansion website here.
  • John Oliver has been driving me crazy lately by his evident inability to update his gig list, but a flurry of his upcoming appearances found their way into my inbox recently. Which is good for any of you who can make it to one of these, because John is utterly brilliant live. Trust me on this one.
    • Saturday, February 9th: John brings “his unique British humor to the UMass Dartmouth Main Auditorium stage”. The show (which also features Daily Show producer Rory Albanese) starts at 7:30 pm; there’s more information available here.
    • Tuesday, February 12th: Prepare for “An intimate encounter with intelligent and alternative comedy” at the Cornelia Street Cafe (NYC). John headlines the show, which will also feature Liam McEneaney, Bryan Tucker, Keith Farnan, Lee Camp and Steve Rosso. More info here.
    • Monday, February 18th: John takes the stage at the Loretto-Hilton Center to perform for the students and community at Webster University (St. Louis, MO). Ticket info is here, and seriously? You get in FREE with a Webster ID? Man, that’s almost criminal!

I can’t make it to any of these (sigh — how ’bout you do a show in DC some evening, guys?), so somebody out there had better find this information useful. Have a great time!

Edited to add: evilsouffle just pointed me to another upcoming John Oliver gig; he’ll be in Charlottesville to perform at UVA on February 15th (click here for details). Thanks for the heads up!
