‘Fat Shame’ and a Fat Baby

Posted by: Ms Interpreted | Comments (17)

During a badly needed break at work today, I decided to take a peek at which Colbert Report was shown on the rerun last night, and I saw that it was the one featuring Amy Farrell and the discussion Stephen and Amy had on weightism. I’m glad I did, because I forgot to post it at the time, but there was actually a follow up Q&A with Prof. Farrell in the Sentinel Online (h/t Jennie), and there’s some fun stuff in it:

5 Questions: Dickinson professor talks interview on ‘Colbert Report’
By Naomi Creason, Sentinel Reporter, October 16, 2009

When Amy Farrell contributed to “The Fat Studies Reader,” she didn’t anticipate showing up on prime-time television to talk about national issues.

. . .

Question: What question were you not expecting?

Farrell: “I wasn’t expecting what he started off with — ‘Let’s get our cards down on the table. I’m fat, you’re fat.’ I wasn’t expecting it at all. I just started laughing. You just never know where he’s going to go.

“That day, I don’t think I’ve ever been more insulted in my life. But it was very fun to be there.”

. . .

Read the full interview here

I quite liked that Colbert Report interview for two reasons. First, I liked it because it acknowledged the weight problem that America is struggling with, but it also talked about a person’s overall health as being more than just a measure of weight.

The second reason I liked it was that it made me think of this Exit 57 sketch, in which a hilariously cruel Stephen proves that he can be quite the fierce defender of at least one “little butterball”:

thumb_6degreesHello, boys and girls, and welcome to another edition of “funny people out there giving us lots to blog about”!

Let’s start with the Jon Stewart bit, shall we? Most of us know Jon as the host of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, but you’d be wrong if you thought that meant he had any real power or clout. Don’t believe me? Watch the clip below featuring Daily Show execs Josh Lieb and Rory Albanese. It’s an advertisement for Josh’s new book (I Am a Genius of Unspeakable Evil and I Want to Be Your Class President), but it’s also quite a revelation, where Jon’s duties are concerned.

Sounds like a great book, Mr. Lieb!

There’s a lot more to cover, both about Jon and others, so click past the fold to see more.

Second City Utterback - 1991Okay, this is kind of awesome. Second City has posted an excerpt of “Talkin’ ‘Bout The Balkans” featuring Fran Adams, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Paul Dinello, David Razowsky, Ruth Rudnick and Amy Sedaris on its website (“Celebrating 50 Years of Funny”)! The video quality isn’t great, the audio is muddy, and the camera is far away (and doesn’t follow the performers), but it’s still a lot of fun; you should definitely watch.

While you’re on the site, check out some of the other photos, videos and more from Second City’s history — there’s some great stuff in there.

second_city_unscripted2Howdy, everyone. I’m sure you all read Ann’s entry about the new book on Second City when she posted it last week, but I thought I’d point out a few more tidbits that have since turned up online and that make The Second City Unscripted: Revolution and Revelation at the World-Famous Comedy Theater (by Mike Thomas) an even more attractive addition to your reading list. Today’s quotes come to us courtesy of former Second City student Mandy Stadtmiller.

From The New York Post:

The Second City unscripted
Comedy troupe bred talent — and total depravity

. . .

[L]ater success stories such as Tina Fey and Stephen Colbert show what happens when the manic performing energy is channeled almost purely into the art itself.

Because Colbert improvised so much on stage, he said he found himself doing it in real life, too. When some gorgeous woman at a club seemed unapproachable, Colbert pretended he was simply making up a new scene where he played a modeling scout.

“I said, ‘I bet like this [snaps fingers], I could get that girl to talk to me,’ ” Colbert recalls. “I said . . . ‘I just want to talk to you about your look.’ She came over and gave me the time. And I walked back over and said, ‘There, I did it.’ . . . In sweatpants. And I don’t have the greatest physique.”

Better yet, Ms. Stadtmiller posted some more quotes on her blog. Some of them have already been excerpted here, and longtime fans of Stephen Colbert, Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello will recognize at least some others, but it’s definitely worth a read. If you must skip ahead, start with this block quote from Paul:

“I came from a blue-collar Chicago background, and Stephen [Colbert] had come from the South. And he got formal acting training at Northwestern, and I was just a drunk idiot. I think he thought I was a bit of a philistine, and I thought he was a bit of a dandy. His hair was in a pompadour, and he had, like, a red turtleneck on, and he held his chin in his hand. Rested his chin on top of his knuckles. And he was very dry. And I had never really followed any rules, nor did I really want to hear about the rules. I always sort of screwed around. I think Farley and I were closer, but oddly enough, Colbert and I hit it off more.”

Don’t forget to stick around for an anecdote about Steve Carell that sounds like a precursor to The 40 Year-Old Virgin. Reading it and imagining Paul’s voice relating the story is thoroughly hilarious.

Thanks to Zoner Conner who tipped me off to a video just recently posted on YouTube, featuring a VERY young Stephen Colbert, Paul Dinello and Paul’s dog Cagney in the park on a beautiful sunny day. This originally aired on WTTW Channel 11 Chicago in 1990. Stephen and Paul show up at the 0:46 mark. You’ll never guess what they’re thinking about while they sunbathe.

I couldn’t resist revisiting these segments after Stephen mentioned his museum in his interview with Mayor Fetterman last night. They’re so much fun (I miss you, Tad!), I thought I’d re-embed and/or link them here for everyone:

Alabama Miracle – Helen Keller Museum: Tad the building manager travels to Colbert County to found The Stephen Colbert Museum & Gift Shop.

Watch the rest of this saga after the jump.
