Klassic Kolbert: OMG! Space!

Posted by: Ms Interpreted | Comments (7)

Good morning, everyone. I meant to post this yesterday for the anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, but real life sort of sandbagged me and I didn’t have time to get it on the site. I trust you’ll forgive me when you start watching these clips of Stephen Colbert interviewing astronauts and basically geeking out over the space program, though; his excitement is infectious and, I think, a perfect way to celebrate some of NASA’s greatest men and women.

I’m really torn as to which of the following clips is my favorite, but I’ll start with this interview with Jim Lovell.

Jim Lovell

The Colbert Report Mon – Thurs 11:30pm / 10:30c
Jim Lovell
www.colbertnation.com
Colbert Report Full Episodes Political Humor Jeff Goldblum

If you guys haven’t watched In the Shadow of the Moon yet, I highly recommend it. It’s very funny and informative, and it really gives you a sense of just who these individuals were, these remarkable astronauts who traveled behind the moon.

I’ve posted more clips after the fold; click through to watch some of Stephen’s other NASA-related antics and odes to the space program.

zeitgeist2Greetings, Zoners! What did you all think about NASA’s name game on Tuesday’s show? I know many people thought that NASA should’ve honored the results of the vote and named Node 3 “Colbert,” but most folks seem to be content with the results. I think NASA came up with a good compromise. They chose a name for the node that honors the history of space exploration, and at the same time rewarded Stephen for all of the attention he’s brought to the ISS and the space program by naming their new high-tech treadmill after him. I think he was very pleased about it. I definitely saw a flash of that gleeful smile of his when Sunita Williams announced how the name “Colbert” would get into space. Kudos to the folks at NASA for coming up with a name with such an impressive acronym!

Everybody and their uncle covered this story — even Scientific American had to add their $.02 — so I thought I’d highlight a few of the most interesting news stories to appear on the Interwebs the past couple of days.

  • NASA names treadmill after Colbert – Associated Press

“Bill Gerstenmaier, NASA’s associate administrator for space operations, said, ‘We have invited Stephen to Florida for the launch of COLBERT and to Houston to try out a version of the treadmill that astronauts train on.’”

  • Station Module Named ‘Tranquility’ to honor Apollo 11 – NASA.gov

“‘We selected ‘Tranquility’ because it ties it to exploration and the moon, and symbolizes the spirit of international cooperation embodied by the space station.’”

  • “COLBERT” goes up into space – CliqueClack TV

“Trust me, the name ‘COLBERT’ will be uttered so often on NASA TV your head will spin — and on top of that, the treadmill is so important for keeping the astronauts healthy that it will always be more important than the ‘box’ that is Node three — around Colbert.”

  • COLBERT treadmill? NASA tips visor to Colbert Nation’s vote – Christian Science Monitor, Discoveries blog

“The gravitas of the International Space Station is safe… The treadmill shall henceforth be known as the Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill… It was a politic end to a corner the agency painted itself into by opening the contest to ‘write-in’ names.” (The editor’s note at the end of the article is good for a laugh.)

Here are a couple of articles on Orbitec, the Wisconsin company providing the software for the COLBERT training system.

  • Madison space company helps build Colbert Treadmill – WKOWTV.com, Madison, WI

“There are nearly 800 parts to the COLBERT. Orbitec officials say the simulation allows astronauts to get it right the first time… ‘The whole process is going to take two astronauts 18 hours to build this,’ says Gustafson. (There’s an IKEA joke in there somewhere…–Ed.)

  • Middleton Company’s Software To Be Used on Space Station – Channel3000, WISCTV.com

“In space, you have to be bungeed down to your treadmill. If you tried to run on a normal treadmill, you would just float away.”

Here’s a bit more on the treadmill–

And finally, a tip of the hat (sort of) to Colbert Nation–

  • Colbert Nation – Cooperation blog (A blog post about Colbert Nation in general, and how Stephen is able to mobilize the Nation when he wants to accomplish something – like getting part of a space station named after him.)

“He uses his authority and their commitment to make an impact on the Internet – a perfect example of using technology (television and the Internet) to assemble and organize a group of people on a moment’s notice. … It may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a smart mob, but that is certainly what Colbert has been able to build. Colbert Nation tunes in on TV and the Internet, heeds his call, and quickly cooperates to make their presence felt. Sure, this smart mob is likely causing more harm than good, but nobody ever said smart mobs had to be helpful mobs.” (No no, we exist only to do good! – Ed.)

I hope Stephen takes up NASA on their invitation to visit them to try out the treadmill for himself, and to be in Florida for the launch of the shuttle flight that will take the new treadmill to the ISS. The COLBERT is scheduled to go to the ISS in August, and the new node “Tranquility” will head up there next year.

Episode 5049 (4/14/2009)

Posted by: DB | Comments (51)

epguideiconEPISODE NUMBER: 5049 (April 14, 2009)
GUEST: Sunita L. Williams, Susie Orbach
SEGMENTS: Clarance Thomas impresses the kids, The WØRD: Have Your Cake And Eat It, Too, NASA Node 3 update
VIDEOS: Tuesday, April 14, 2009

I don’t know about you guys, but when I start respecting a major appliance over a Supreme Court judge, I start to worry about the balance of things in my life.

For those who don’t follow my Twitter feed, the AP leaked the story about the Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill (COLBERT) about an hour before the show started. The ones I feel bad for are the Browncoats, honestly. At least Stephen Colbert and the Nation got a treadmill. And I loved the Jetsons clip in the show bumper.

Stephen has often hinted, both as “Stephen” and even in actual interviews, that he is sensitive about his looks and weight. (Anyone who has listened to the ‘Strangers With Candy’ commentary will know what I’m talking about.) I found the guest interesting and find the topic of “normal” body size one of the most squirm-inducing topics that can be introduced on ‘The Colbert Report’. I think it’s because for me, like so many others out there, body image is an intensely personal issue, and one that most of us (self very much included) have very intense feelings about. It’s always interesting to see the walls that go up when body image is discussed. The end of the interview did lighten things up a bit for me, though – Stephen was determined to get that ‘Daily Show’ quip out at the end. I love it when he fights to slip in a joke he’s dying to tell.

So – are you as happy about the treadmill as Stephen? Did you love the nailing that Colbert gave Thomas? Are you as happy for the show to be back as we are? Can’t wait to hear your comments!

zeitgeist2Happy weekend, Zoners! Time for another stroll around the Colbertoverse. Here’s your zeitgeist for April 11th.

OMG! SPACE!!

  • Colbert and Congresswoman Giffords spar over space station

The sparring between Stephen and Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (aka “Miss Pink Sweater Set”), as well as the Node 3 naming contest, gets covered nicely in this video from azfamily.com. I can’t embed it here, but go have a look and watch Rep. Giffords have her say. (Mentioned in this video, but not on TCR, is the fact that Giffords is married to an astronaut.)

  • NASA to Reveal Space Module’s Name on ‘Colbert Report’ – SPACE.com

Some additional information about the impending announcement of the official name of Node 3, to be revealed on Tuesday night’s episode. Quote from NASA’s spokesperson John Yembrick: “The program is having us on knowing that we have chosen a name, but they do not know the name of the node.” So apparently this will be a surprise to Stephen as well as the rest of us. Hoo boy…

Better Know a Congressperson

There was some coverage of Rep. Dan Maffei’s BKAD segment, which was generally considered a hit.

  • ‘Evil Congressman Maffei’ appears on ‘The Colbert Report’ – The Post-Standard, Syracuse.com

Congressman Maffei says his feedback has all been positive. See, congresspeople, it doesn’t hurt. (Much…)

  • Rep. Dan Maffei on Colbert: Prostitutes, Cocaine, NAMBLA, Oh My! – Huffington Post

Another positive review for the appearance, saying that Maffei “came across as genial and game” and that his “good humor served him well.” I agree, he was a good sport. The BKAD segments are so much better when the interview subject rolls with Stephen and abandons any attempt to stay dignified.

  • Rep. Dan Maffei appears on Stephen Colbert show – WSYR-TV in Syracuse

This article has a poll asking for reactions to Maffei’s appearance on TCR. The choices are “Hilarious! Glad he had a sense of humor,” “Bad political move,” and “Whatever.” “Hilarious” is winning by a wide margin, while “Whatever” is a distant second.

Remember Rep. Bill Posey of Florida, and those rumors about his grandma and an alligator?

  • New Rep. Bill Posey gains his footing after a rough start – Orlando Sentinal (emphasis added):

“Instead, the bill fell flat — it has yet to attract a co-sponsor — and Posey took a beating from late-night comedy-show hosts and liberal media, who accused him of kowtowing to extremists in his party.

“‘I expected there would be some civil debate about it, but it wasn’t civil,’ Posey said. ‘Just a bunch of name-calling and personal denigration. … There is no reason to say that I’m the illegitimate grandson of an alligator.‘” [Hahahahaha!!--Ed.]
