Six Degrees: Kiss Me I’m Irish Edition.
Posted by: | Comments![]()
Ok, so I lied. I’m not actually Irish, I’m Australian but you can still kiss me and we drink just as much … if not more. I hope you’ve all recovered from good ol’ St. Patty’s Day and the festivities that ensured. Mine was a rather dismal day, I didn’t touch a drop of drink, there were no celebrations at Uni and I only wore green by accident. So if you’re like me and have had a boring day/week I hope the activities of Stephen’s friends and colleagues puts a smile on your dial.

America’s most delightfully unconventional hostess and the bestselling author of I Like You delivers a new book that will forever change the world of crafting. According to Amy Sedaris, it’s often been said that ugly people craft and attractive people have sex. In her new book, SIMPLE TIMES, she sets the record straight. Demonstrating that crafting is one of life’s more pleasurable and constructive leisure activities, Sedaris shows that anyone with a couple of hours to kill and access to pipe cleaners can join the elite society of crafters.

Coolest kids in science are on ‘The Daily Show’, ‘Colbert Report’
Posted by: | CommentsIt should come as no surprise to fans of either show, but it looks like the mainstream press is waking up to the notion that the best places to catch scientific rock stars on TV are on The Daily Show or The Colbert Report. Some of my favorite guests have been science geeks (Brian Cox! Janna Levin!), and I’m already giddy with anticipation with tonight’s Daily Show interview of Neil deGrasse Tyson.
Today’s THE USA Today has a write-up of the Daily Show/Colbert Report and science phenomenon here (internal links omitted):
Best science on TV: Comedy Central’s Stewart, Colbert?
By Dan Vergano, USA TODAYLooking for science? Headed for Animal Planet or the Science Channel?
Think again, scientists say: All the cool kids want to sit across from Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.
“Comedy Central is it, as far as science goes,” says Caltech physicist Sean Carroll, who is scheduled for a Colbert Report visit in March to promote his book, From Eternity to Here: The Quest for the Ultimate Theory of Time. “I give tremendous credit to The Daily Show and The Colbert Report for understanding that science is fascinating and fun, not off-putting and work.”
. . .
I honestly think my favorite Jon Stewart and Neil deGrasse Tyson moment was the one where Jon teased Dr. Tyson about the Rubik’s Cube, but The Daily Show’s link to that one is messed up. Still, to whet your appetite for tonight, please feel free to revisit this fun exchange instead:

G’day Zoners, I hope you’ve all been enjoying the Winter Olympics. I for one have become obsessed with all things ice related – Speed Skating, Figure Skating, Curling and Ice Hockey. A great obsession to have smack bang in the middle of an Australian summer. I of course blame Stephen for my new found love of winter sports. For those of you able to tear yourselves away from all things ice and snow, Stephen’s friends have some exciting upcoming projects for you to check out.

Conan O’Brien
- Exciting news for all Coco fans, courtesy of The New York Times:
Representatives of Mr. O’Brien, the former host of “The Tonight Show” on NBC, confirmed Friday that plans are in the works to book what is being called “a revue” starring Mr. O’Brien in theaters in major cities from California to New York, and perhaps parts further east and west–and maybe north.
After exploring the degree of interest with some locations, Mr. O’Brien’s team has received “enormous interest from all over,” said one of his representatives, who asked not to be identified because the plans are not yet ready to announce. “We’ve heard from the U.K., Scandinavia, Australia, Toronto, everywhere; it’s been incredible.”

‘The Pluto Files’: Anchors, pundits defend Pluto’s planetary status
Posted by: | CommentsWith all the chatter here about Stephen’s appearances at the Olympics and on Faces of America, it’s easy to overlook the approaching air date of The Pluto Files, where our favorite fundit defends that poor, downgraded celestial body. Happily for us, the good people at NOVA continue to release teaser vids:
NOVA | The Pluto Files with Neil deGrasse Tyson: What does Pluto’s demotion mean to Americans?
NOVA | The Pluto Files with Neil deGrasse Tyson: If Pluto is Not a Planet
This is going to be great! I read The Pluto Files on my commute last year, and it was interesting and very funny — just like Stephen and others involved in this production. (I mean, c’mon, a book that includes hate mail from elementary school children AND quotes Jonathan Coulton’s “I’m Your Moon” has to be awesome, right?) I fully expect the TV show to be every bit as brilliant.

February of course, can mean only one thing – Vancouver!! But while Stephen is off polishing his skates in preparation for the Winter Olympics his friends will be back in the good old US of A working on their latest new projects.

Stephen Colbert to appear in “The Pluto Files” on PBS
Posted by: | CommentsHere’s something that looks like fun for all of us space geeks! On March 2nd, PBS is scheduled to air The Pluto Files, hosted by rockstar astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and based on his book of the same name. From the program description on the show’s web site:
The Pluto Files
Premiere broadcast on PBS: March 2, 2010
. . .From Boston to California, Tyson’s spirited journey explores the history of Pluto — from the time of its discovery to its fall from planethood. Along the way, Tyson meets a fascinating cast of characters, from scientists who argue over Pluto’s status to die-hard “Plutophiles” — regardless of where they stand they have one thing in common: strong opinions about Pluto. “The Pluto Files” also includes special appearances by Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, Diane Sawyer, and Brian Williams, who share their affection for the former planet. “I’m sorry, I thought planets might be one of the constants in life,” Colbert jests. “But scientists just love change more than anything else. I’m sorry that’s not change I can believe in.”
. . .
There’s a preview of the program posted on PBS’ web site which I can’t embed here, but you can catch a glimpse of Dr. Tyson being interviewed on both The Daily Show and the Report. There’s also a promo video up on YouTube, in which Jon Stewart calls Dr. Tyson a “galactic despot” and Brian Williams gets in a little dig at Stewart and Colbert. This is going to be so entertaining!
