Preview: Stephen Colbert in “The Love Guru”
Posted by: | CommentsThanks to Zoner Fleur for tipping me off to this preview of the new Mike Myers movie “The Love Guru”, playing in theaters on June 20th. Stephen Colbert has a cameo as a hockey announcer, and can be seen oh so briefly in this clip.
Here’s an early review of Stephen’s performance, courtesy of Ain’t It Cool News (via Fanhouse):
The supporting cast basically add up to a list of extended cameos, but when it comes to the previous Myers flicks, the cameos most often were the bits that I laughed at the most. Notably, The Maple Leafs announcers are played by Jim Jim Gaffigan and Stephen Colbert, and they brought down the house. I could have watched an entire movie with Colbert’s cracked out announcer baiting Jim Gaffigan, but hopefully there’s more footage that will be released on DVD.

Stephen Colbert as a hockey announcer?
Posted by: | CommentsWell, this came as a bit of a surprise to me. Entertainment Weekly has an item posted talking about the upcoming Mike Myers movie, The Love Guru, scenes from which recently screened at ShoWest. I didn’t think the trailers for this movie looked particularly funny, but I was planning on seeing it regardless, as I know John Oliver has a role in it and I’ve liked everything that he’s been involved with (of the stuff I’ve seen/read/heard, anyway).
But here’s the part of the EW.com item that surprised me (emphasis mine):
Mike Myers, Jessica Alba introduce ‘The Love Guru’ at ShoWest
Mar 12, 2008, 04:59 PM | by Joshua RichMike Myers and (a very pregnant) Jessica Alba made a surprise appearance at ShoWest in Las Vegas on Tuesday night to present clips from their summer comedy The Love Guru. After some cutesy banter in which Myers claimed to be Alba’s baby daddy, the pair introduced four scenes from the film, which appears to be a return to the live-action shtick that Myers perfected before he turned into a jolly green animated ogre several years ago … (Also popping up: Stephen Colbert as a hockey announcer and erstwhile “Mini-Me” Verne Troyer.)
. . .
Well, I think that now I really need to make sure I see this film. I mean, Stephen’s in it? As a hockey announcer? I only wish it could be for an OHL game featuring the Saginaw Spirit and his namesake, Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle!

Imagine a world where Stephen Colbert is president …
Posted by: | Comments… and Hugh Laurie is a cockroach who also happens to have a PhD. These are two of the roles featured in DreamWorks Picture’s movie, “Monsters vs. Aliens”. From USA Today:
First look: ‘Monsters vs. Aliens’ is the ultimate; a 3-D ‘first’
By Susan Wloszczyna, USA TODAY‘Monsters vs. Aliens’ is a throwback to those B-movie glory days of the ’50s when Martians invaded our backyards and rubber monsters stalked the Earth.
But the DreamsWorks sci-fi spoof also transforms a once-tacky Ike-era gimmick into an eye-popping 21st-century experience as the first computer-animated feature to be shot in 3-D.
Studios such as Disney have dimensionalized CGI films, but only after a non-3-D version was made.
DreamWorks, which will preview Monsters for ShoWest exhibitors in Las Vegas today, is commit- ted to doing all its animated releases directly in 3-D from now on. “This isn’t our father’s 3-D,” says the studio’s animation chief, Jeffrey Katzenberg. Though it still relies on funny glasses, “the digital projection puts a perfect image on the screen. There is no ghosting, no eye strain or nausea.”
To avoid confusion, since computer animation is already called 3-D, he calls it “the Ultimate 3-D.”
…
That includes hearing Reese Witherspoon as Susan Murphy, a modern-day California girl who has the bad luck to be hit by a meteor on her wedding day and grows to be 49 feet, 11½ inches tall (a wink at 1958’s The Attack of the 50-Foot Woman). Captured by the military, she’s renamed Ginormica.
“I got very inspired when the studio showed me storyboards,” says the 5-foot-2 actress. “Playing a larger-than-life woman has given me my own opportunity to make tall jokes.” She also is no stranger to cinematic cheese. “My father was a fan of Roger Corman movies,” she says. “I watched a lot of those on late-night TV.”
Joining her giantess to fend off Rainn Wilson’s evil alien Gallaxhar are Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D. (Hugh Laurie), the jellylike B.O.B. (Seth Rogen) and the half-ape, half-fish Missing Link (Will Arnett). Kiefer Sutherland speaks for Gen. W.R. Monger (get it?), and Stephen Colbert is the president.
“He plays it on steroids,” Katzenberg assures.

Stephen Colbert cameo in Gahan Wilson documentary
Posted by: | CommentsColboarder uuf found some information on a currently unreleased documentary on Gahan Wilson, famed cartoonist, in which Stephen Colbert is interviewed about the documentary subject. The Comics Reporter printed an interview with the director of the movie, Steven-Charles Jaffe, and explains some of the different cameos in the movie:
Newsmaker: Steven-Charles Jaffe
By Andrew Farago‘Gahan Wilson: Born Dead, Still Weird’ is filmmaker Steven-Charles Jaffe’s documentary featuring one of the most celebrated and iconic American artists of the past half-century. Wilson’s distinctive cartoons and illustrations have graced the pages of ‘The New Yorker’, ‘Nickelodeon’, ‘Playboy’ and ‘National Lampoon’, but his personal life remains a mystery. Jaffe’s film is a lively and entertaining portrait of the man whom Director Guillermo del Toro honors with the title “the poster child of disenfranchised children.”
…
FARAGO: Some of the interview subjects, like Hugh Hefner (Playboy) and Bob Mankoff (cartoon editor of The New Yorker) are obvious choices for a film about Gahan Wilson. What was the reasoning behind the inclusion of Stephen Colbert, Lewis Black and Randy Newman? Was there anything in particular about them that made you feel they’d be fans of Gahan’s work?
JAFFE: I asked myself, if I weren’t making this movie, who would I want to see in it? So I made a list of people that I admire who have a distinct sense of humor and then I set about contacting them and their representatives to see if there would be any interest in giving me an interview. I only guessed that they were fans of Gahan’s.
In fact, I’ve been astonished at how many people in so many different walks of life, have been touched by Gahan’s work. Although not in the movie, Al Gore is a big fan of Gahan’s and has one his cartoons in his home office! I knew Neil Gaiman and Gahan had collaborated in the past, so it wasn’t totally guesswork, but I was so thrilled when Neil agreed to be interviewed.

- January 5th- Wheels of Fury – 7pm
- January 19th- Shock Asylum – 7pm (a MUST SEE!)
- January 26th- Beyond the Door – 7pm
For those of you who consider yourselves hard core fans (or those of you who just like avant gard comedy), you seriously need to check out the Shock Productions short films directed by Dan Dinello and featuring Stephen Colbert, Paul Dinello and Amy Sedaris. Go to the Shock Productions site and spend $20 on this DVD. The “Shock Asylum” short alone is worth the price of the whole DVD, and the other stories are great, too.
For Stephen Colbert fans, this is a Holy DVD of Obligation and ranks up there in Obscure Fan Memorabilia with “Wigfield” and “Exit 57″ bootlegs.
And tell them NoFactZone.net sent you. I don’t get a cut of the profits or anything, I just thought Dan might appreciate a nice greeting on occasion. He’s a very nice man.

“The Great New Wonderful” DVD Release – September 12, 2006
Posted by: | CommentsStephen Colbert is one of the ensemble cast of “A Great New Wonderful”, a fantastic film that was only in indie theaters for a small blip. However, it’s about to go into DVD release, and I highly recommend either buying the DVD or renting it from your local video store or Netflix.
I’m really lousy at reviewing movies, so I’ll spare you an attempt. I will say this though – Stephen’s final scene is one of the most memorable of the movie, and it’s both funny and deeply disturbing.
You can check out dozens of reviews of this movie at Rotten Tomatoes.com (Tomatometer Rating: 71%)

While this blog is looking forward to getting caught up on some much needed sleep, I’m also going to be doing some serious Jonesing for some Colbert. Here’s some ideas to keep you occupied beteween 1:00AM tomorrow and 12:00 PM on September 11th when they return:
- 2006 Emmy Awards – Not only is The Colbert Report up for four Emmy awards (plus Stephen is also up for a writing Emmy with The Daily Show), Stephen will be presenting during the show as well!
- Wigfield - This is a Holy Book of Obligation for all Stephen Colbert fans. The book is great, but the book PLUS the audio CD of the reading of the book by Colbert is amazing! Listen to the CD, and then read the sections in the book and enjoy the pictures.
- YouTube and Motherload – Get your Colbert on with videos from Comedy Central and YouTube. You can see a list of recommended YouTube vidoes at this site’s Audio/Visual page.
- OSCLA.com – Come commisserate with other Colbert fans during the Long Dark Haitus of the Soul at this Stephen Colbert-centered Fan Forum
- Strangers With Candy – The Movie and A Great New Wonderful - Stephen is in TWO different theatrical release movies running in arthouses near you. Go find one of these arthouses and enjoy a little Colbert with your popcorn and Coca-Cola. The Great New Wonderful is opening in Dallas tomorrow, August 25th, and I’ll be there tomorrow night with bells on. Not literally. I’ll most probably be there with a Woodchuck Cider, because it’s payday and they sell booze at the fancy movie house.
- Bewitched – Stephen Colbert has a small part in this movie, but if you rent/buy it, you HAVE to check out the Bonus features, especially the bits with Nora Ephron. Trust me.

We’ll keep you up to date on all the Colbert news articles, Emmy celebrations (fingers crossed, people!), Bridge updates, Green Screen videos and anything else we can find to keep entertained while The Colbert Report is dark.
