Six Degrees: Vancouver Edition.

Posted by: Katt | Comments (7)

G’day Zoners, I hope you’ve all been enjoying the Winter Olympics. I for one have become obsessed with all things ice related – Speed Skating, Figure Skating, Curling and Ice Hockey. A great obsession to have smack bang in the middle of an Australian summer. I of course blame Stephen for my new found love of winter sports. For those of you able to tear yourselves away from all things ice and snow, Stephen’s friends have some exciting upcoming projects for you to check out.

Friends of the Show:

Neil DeGrasse Tyson

Conan O’Brien

  • Exciting news for all Coco fans, courtesy of The New York Times:

Representatives of Mr. O’Brien, the former host of “The Tonight Show” on NBC, confirmed Friday that plans are in the works to book what is being called “a revue” starring Mr. O’Brien in theaters in major cities from California to New York, and perhaps parts further east and west–and maybe north.

After exploring the degree of interest with some locations, Mr. O’Brien’s team has received “enormous interest from all over,” said one of his representatives, who asked not to be identified because the plans are not yet ready to announce. “We’ve heard from the U.K., Scandinavia, Australia, Toronto, everywhere; it’s been incredible.”

Hey, everyone, looks like it’s “clean out my inbox” day again, and I’ve got a lot of updates and tips to pass along to you all.

On a more personal note, I’m currently digging out from underneath a cartoonishly large workload, which was itself just buried under a new mountain of tasks today, so I’m really not sure when I’ll have time to do another one of these posts. I say this to encourage you to leave any additional tips and/or links in the comments to this post, as I suspect a baby born today might reach the legal drinking age before I have free time to do another Six Degrees entry. That said, I’m taking the time to do this one, so read onward!

The Daily Show correspondents

  • If you TiVo the shows and skip the commercials, you might have missed this: The Daily Show is going to be live on Tuesday for Inauguration Day, with the correspondents weighing in from Washington, DC. This is one of the few times that DC looks like the cool place to be, so stay tuned. [Now I'm *really* peeved that I'll have to work that day ... but no way I'm doing it from DC! My office is two blocks from the White House, and I refuse to wade into that insanity if I won't even get the chance to see the party. Any of you TDS people who tire of the crowds are welcome to join me at my place, where I'll be grumbling about my job on that otherwise festive day.]

More from Eric Drysdale, J.J. Sedelmaier, Pete Grosz, Laura Krafft, John Oliver, Amy Sedaris, Demetri Martin and Ben Karlin after the fold!

I’ve got to ease myself back into this blogging game; I’m sure there are any number of stories and blurbs that I’ve missed since I began my holiday break, so I’m going to have to ask you all to be patient with me as I try to catch up on the various gigs and goings on. Here are a few events and items that you might find interesting; as ever, please leave your additions and updates in the comments. Thanks!

Aasif Mandvi

  • Aasif will be hosting the Stand Up for Peace event (featuring comedians Dean Obeidallah, Scott Blakeman, Maysoon Zaid, Seth Herzog, and Jessi Klein) on January 6th at the Gotham Comedy Club. Click here for more details.

Rob Riggle

Laura Krafft

  • Catch one of our favorite writers of yesteryear (Laura Krafft!) performing in “Three Piece” at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater on Thursday, January 15th, and in the recurring “Let’s Have a Ball” show on Saturday nights.

Peter Grosz

  • New York City’s UCBT hosts another Colbert Report alumnus (Peter Grosz) in “2 Square“. See this improv show on Monday, January 19th and 26th.

John Oliver (and others!)

  • John will be appearing at the release party for Eugene Mirman’s The Will To Whatevs: A Guide To Modern Life on February 10th … and he’ll be joined by fellow Daily Show members John Hodgman and Kristen Schaal. Have I mentioned lately that I wish I lived in NYC?
  • If you’re not already listening to John’s delightful weekly podcast (The Bugle, with Andy Zaltzman), then I’m going to have to take this moment to be horribly disappointed in you, as I’ve mentioned it several times over in these Six Degrees posts. I’m giving the podcast another plug today because John mentioned Stephen in the last episode of The Bugle (approx. 15:45 minutes into the episode), in a reference to The Love Guru that made me giggle like a preteen girl.

Andy quoted George W. Bush as saying, “What matters to me is that I didn’t compromise my soul to be a popular guy,” which caused John and Andy to speculate on what they have compromised their respective souls for … I think I may leave it at that and have you go listen for yourselves. You can download the podcast for free on iTunes (the episode in question is “Episode 57 – Hats off to Obama, shoes off for Bush”), or you can go through the Times Online page. I’d recommend the link even for those of you who normally listen via iTunes, since the linked page includes an utterly magnificent photo of John “throwing shapes” at Andy’s wedding to the dulcet strains of “The Voice”. Heaven help us! (P.S. Congratulations on successfully acting as midwife for the birth of your son, Andy!)

Amy Sedaris

  • The always delightful Amy Sedaris had an author event at a Borders bookstore in New York on December 16th, and there’s some footage of it on YouTube for all of us to enjoy. Here’s Part One (of two):

And here’s the link to the second part. Thanks for the tip, Jennie!

Man, these links build up when I don’t have time to put these posts together right away!

Man, it seems that the folks at The Daily Show and The Colbert Report (current and alumni) have all come back from hiatus hell bent on wearing me out!! I’m not complaining, I love that they all have so much going on, but keeping tabs on them all is quite the exercise. Soooo … away we go!

Rachel Axler (writer, The Daily Show)

  • Congratulations to Rachel Axler and the rest of the Daily Show’s writing team for their Emmy nomination! They work hard for their show, and I hope they’re all celebrating the nom.

Sadly, a glance over the list of nominated writers reminds me, once again, that there’s a dearth of female writers on the shows in their category (Variety, Music or Comedy Program), and that number is dropping still further. According to Videogum, Rachel will be leaving The Daily Show soon, leaving TDS with … zero women writers. I know they’ll pick the best possible talent to try to fill Rachel’s shoes, but I must admit that I’m rather fervently hoping that their new hire is a woman. Still, it’s got to be exciting for Rachel to be heading for a spot on the writing staff of the spinoff from The Office, and we wish her well.

Laura Krafft and Peter Grosz (former and current writers, respectively, The Colbert Report)

  • Speaking of former (female!) writers, New Yorkers can catch Laura Krafft performing this weekend with Peter Grosz and the hilarious David Rakoff at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in “Three-Piece!” this Saturday. The UCBT website describes the show as an “improvised monologue in three parts”; check out ticketing information here.

Rob and Nate Corddry (former correspondents, The Daily Show)

Rob Kutner, John Oliver, Wyatt Cenac, Rob Riggle, Rory Albanese, Adam Lowitt (writers, correspondents and producers, The Daily Show)

  • For fun with some of the writers and correspondents who are still with The Daily Show, pop by the “Tell Your Friends” shows at the Lolita Bar. Rob Kutner will be appearing there on Monday, July 21st and both John Oliver and Wyatt Cenac will be on hand for the July 28th show. Further information can be found here.
  • Rory Albanese (a.k.a. The Bugle’s “American”) hosts another installment of “An Evening with ‘The Daily Show’ & Friends” at Comix on July 21st. He’ll be joined by John Oliver, Rob Riggle, Wyatt Cenac, Adam Lowitt and more! Get further info on the show here.
  • Here’s another one for Wyatt: a “Weezy and The Swish” podcast from earlier this month. I don’t know why, but his passive-agressive tone as regards the hosts (who talked too much, IMO) really cracked me up. Good stuff!

Samantha Bee (correspondent, The Daily Show)

  • For further proof that The Daily Show is rewarding not only for those who leave but for those who stay, as well, check out Sam Bee’s quote in Canada’s National Post: “I’m going to be the old battle-axe. They may have to pry my cold dead hands off the microphone.” Nice to hear that she’s going to be sticking around!

As always, please check with the venues themselves to confirm the lineups, and feel free to add updates and corrections in the comments.

The best darned hour on TV
You’re not going to want to miss this one, New Yorkers! Writers and correspondents from The Daily Show and The Colbert Report will once again be teaming up to provide an evening of improv for the Del Close Marathon.

The Daily Show/Colbert Report Improv Jam

What:
Your favorite writers and correspondents from The Daily Show w/Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report join together for a one-time-only improv show.

Who:
Peter Gwinn, Ed Helms, Laura Krafft, Rob Riggle, more!!

Where and When:
Sat 8:30 pm at FIT Kate Murphy Ampitheatre (Buy tickets)

Very nice! I wonder who the “more” will be? John Oliver and Wyatt Cenac both have improv backgrounds, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see (Peter Grosz does, too, but I think he’ll still be at the DC Comedyfest at that point). But hey, look at that list already, what’s not to like?

I hope at least a few people here get to go! (Why, oh why, did that have to be during the weekend I’m moving?)
