Six Degrees: Kiss Me I’m Irish Edition.
Posted by: | Comments![]()
Ok, so I lied. I’m not actually Irish, I’m Australian but you can still kiss me and we drink just as much … if not more. I hope you’ve all recovered from good ol’ St. Patty’s Day and the festivities that ensured. Mine was a rather dismal day, I didn’t touch a drop of drink, there were no celebrations at Uni and I only wore green by accident. So if you’re like me and have had a boring day/week I hope the activities of Stephen’s friends and colleagues puts a smile on your dial.

America’s most delightfully unconventional hostess and the bestselling author of I Like You delivers a new book that will forever change the world of crafting. According to Amy Sedaris, it’s often been said that ugly people craft and attractive people have sex. In her new book, SIMPLE TIMES, she sets the record straight. Demonstrating that crafting is one of life’s more pleasurable and constructive leisure activities, Sedaris shows that anyone with a couple of hours to kill and access to pipe cleaners can join the elite society of crafters.

G’day Zoners, I hope you’ve all been enjoying the Winter Olympics. I for one have become obsessed with all things ice related – Speed Skating, Figure Skating, Curling and Ice Hockey. A great obsession to have smack bang in the middle of an Australian summer. I of course blame Stephen for my new found love of winter sports. For those of you able to tear yourselves away from all things ice and snow, Stephen’s friends have some exciting upcoming projects for you to check out.

- Exciting news for all Coco fans, courtesy of The New York Times:
Representatives of Mr. O’Brien, the former host of “The Tonight Show” on NBC, confirmed Friday that plans are in the works to book what is being called “a revue” starring Mr. O’Brien in theaters in major cities from California to New York, and perhaps parts further east and west–and maybe north.
After exploring the degree of interest with some locations, Mr. O’Brien’s team has received “enormous interest from all over,” said one of his representatives, who asked not to be identified because the plans are not yet ready to announce. “We’ve heard from the U.K., Scandinavia, Australia, Toronto, everywhere; it’s been incredible.”

Hello, boys and girls. I know Tiger usually does these now, but there’s been so much news coming in on our favorite people from The Daily Show that I thought I’d throw a few links together while we await her next post.
Let’s get things started with a few items featuring Jon Stewart’s recent trip to the Kennedy Center Honors, where he helped to pay tribute to honoree Bruce Sprinsteen. First off, check out this photo of Jon and his wife, Tracey, on the red carpet. How fabulous does she look? I love that Jon looks like he can hardly believe he’s there with that gorgeous woman. The Washington Post did a general write-up of the event here; NorthJersey.com went into more detail about Jon’s tribute to Bruce here. I love Jon’s quote that “When you listen to Bruce Springsteen, you weren’t a loser, you were a character in an epic poem about losers.” Nicely put, Mr. Stewart. CBS will air footage from the event on December 29th.

Once again, our favorite fearless interviewers are out and about, sharing their talent in a variety of venues. Check out what they’ve done, or possibly find an opportunity to see one of them for yourself! (Emphatic h/t to MsI and DB throughout.)
Samantha Bee (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)
- Since the last time I’ve mentioned it in Six Degrees, Sam’s recently finished her role in the off-Broadway show
Love, Loss, and What I Wore. She was interviewed twice as a result of her involvement with that show. In this interview, you can learn a lot about her experiences growing up, long before she was being funny on The Daily Show. For a rather amusing discussion of clothing, among other reflections, you can check out this interview. - If you didn’t see the show in New York, another way you can see Sam is at The Connecticut Forum’s “It’s Satire!” show November 14th, 8:00 PM at The Bushnell Theater in Hartford. You can find ticket information at their website. David Javerbaum, who you’ll remember as co-lyricist of A Colbert Christmas, as well as former Executive Producer of The Daily Show, will also be appearing.
- Whether you’re able to attend “It’s Satire!” or not, you can enjoy this interview by TWoP user shamskygirl. There’s discussion here of both process and gender in comedy, and Sam has some very insightful answers.
Larry Wilmore (Contributer, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)
- Larry’s book I’d Rather We Got Casinos: And Other Black Thoughts was released in January, but if you’re in Miami, you still have a chance to hear about it from the man himself. Larry is one of the many authors who will be appearing at the Miami Book Fair, which will take place November 8-15. You can find out all about the fair at its website, and although it’s not immediately obvious when Larry will be there, you can probably find most other information about the fair, and possibly more specific information will be available there soon.

Six Degrees: Jon Stewart (and ghosts of ‘The Daily Show’ past and present)
Posted by: | Comments
Hello, boys and girls, and welcome to another edition of “funny people out there giving us lots to blog about”!
Let’s start with the Jon Stewart bit, shall we? Most of us know Jon as the host of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, but you’d be wrong if you thought that meant he had any real power or clout. Don’t believe me? Watch the clip below featuring Daily Show execs Josh Lieb and Rory Albanese. It’s an advertisement for Josh’s new book (I Am a Genius of Unspeakable Evil and I Want to Be Your Class President), but it’s also quite a revelation, where Jon’s duties are concerned.
Sounds like a great book, Mr. Lieb!
There’s a lot more to cover, both about Jon and others, so click past the fold to see more.

Ahhh, Zoners! I got to see John Oliver performing a while ago at Comix! Our friends over at the Daily Show really are an entertaining bunch. Hopefully some of this info will allow you to have similarly joyful experiences!
Wyatt Cenac (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) and Larry Wilmore (Contributor, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
- Wyatt and Larry will be appearing a the comedy club Comix in NYC on Friday, August 21, and Saturday, August 22 at 8 PM and 10:30 PM on both nights. For more information and to purchase tickets, you can go here. I was able to see Wyatt when I went to TDS & Friends last year, and I assure you that he is marvelous. I’m sure, based on Larry’s appearances on TDS, it’s not hard to imagine his stand-up being wonderful as well. If you can get to this show, count me as jealous!
- For those on the west coast hoping to catch Wyatt sometime, you should know that he’ll be appearing at the Bumbershoot 2009 in Seattle on Saturday, September 5th from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM and Sunday, September 6th from 7:15 to 8:15, both at the Comedy Stage North . Also performing with him during that time will be Tommy Johnagin and Maria Bamford. To see the entire comedy line up for the festival and easily click to a page about tickets, you can go here.
- Also pertaining to Wyatt, here is a piece form Variety which gives a brief overview of how he ended up with his current success. I am always amazed with how quickly he went from being in serious trouble to being a full-fledged correspondent at TDS! (h/t: MsI)
Samantha Bee (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)
- Sam Bee will be appearing in one of the three rotating five-member casts of Love, Loss, and What I Wore, a show which will be running in the off-Broadway Westlake Theatre this fall. Although it isn’t current possible to know when she will appear, and perhaps it never will be, it sounds like there are a lot of other great people in the show as well. The most comprehensive information for now is at Broadway.com, and the show will eventually have a site here.
Jason Jones (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)
- All of you who have been watching the show lately will surely remember Jason Jones’s trip to Alaska, where he attended Sarah Palin’s resignation speech and gave the media a serious talking-to. Twitter user orbitaldiamonds was also in present, and she has posted some pictures of Jason there in her blog. They are spread over two posts, here and here. (h/t: Jenny)
John Oliver (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) and Rory Albanese (Executive Producer, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)
- Exciting news for both John and Rory, as they have have signed a blind script deal with Paramount. As we’re all part of this blindness (we don’t know what’s being written until it’s finished) there’s not much more to say about that besides to hope that it turns out well! This article, which has quotes from both John and Rory about the deal, also says that the two will also form a production venture. (h/t: MsI)
- You’ll also remember that a previous Six Degrees post mentioned that John would be appearing int he new NBC series Community. The pilot for this how is now available to be viewed if you become a “fan” of the show on Facebook. Here is the Facebook page where info for becoming a fan and watching the pilot can be found. I haven’t done either of those things yet, but if you have, you should compare impressions in the comments!
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
- I’m sure some of you have already seen this piece in the New Yorker: Why Neoconservative Pundits Love Jon Stewart. Whether or not you agree with the perspective they share, it’s always interesting to hear from the perspective of people who decide it’s worth it to appear on The Daily Show.

I can’t stop watching this
Posted by: | CommentsJust hearing Jon Stewart voicing these beautiful, beautiful words is intoxicating: “At 11 o’clock at night, Eastern Standard Time, the President of the United States is Barack Obama.”
Politico has posted another article covering the atmosphere at the Daily Show last night. This quote from Larry Wilmore made me feel simultaneously proud of and grateful to these guys all over again: “When Jon finally said, ‘President Barack Obama,’ I was a little taken aback. It was like I wasn’t a correspondent then. It was surreal.” I can only imagine how much that must have taken them all out of their personae (and into the moment). What an amazing, unbelievable night.

Six Degrees: More ‘Daily Show’ alumni than you can shake a stick at
Posted by: | CommentsGreetings and salutations, y’all! Now that I’ve recovered (somewhat) from my middle of the night trip back from NYC, I’ve got a full slate of news to catch up on from the good folks at The Daily Show and all. Do enjoy!
Jon Stewart
- Jon’s been named one of the thirty-six Jews shaping this election. Impressive stuff, for a guy who has to argue about Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashana with our own Stephen Colbert!
- Jon also recently performed his standup routine at Northeastern Unversity. From what I can tell, it was a real treat! Here are some pictures and plenty of YouTube footage (see also Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4). As a resident of “The People’s Republic of Northern Virginia,” I can particularly appreciate Jon’s reiterating his position on whether NoVa constitutes a part of the “real America” or not. Beware: The videos are NSFW (Jon uses language that we generally bleep on this blog.)
Larry Wilmore (Contributor, The Daily Show)
- The strength of the Election year Daily Show programming has TDS’s other players getting more attention, again. And it’s well-deserved attention, when you think of all they do. Larry Wilmore, who has a new book and show to discuss, has a nice write-up in this Scripps News Service piece. From Scripps (quoting one of Larry’s Daily Show pieces): “‘… Obama is winning, that’s not very black. McCain’s been showing me some flava lately. He’s angry at the man, thinks the media’s out to get him. Which of the candidates has been doing this job for 26 years, waiting to get a promotion and then some inexperienced Harvard egghead comes in and snaps it up? Oh yeah, I think McCain is feeling pretty black right about now.’”
Adam Chodikoff (Producer, The Daily Show)
- If you’re a regular reader of this site, you already know about the man behind those unbelievable Daily Show clip montages, Adam Chodikoff. He gets a little more love here, from WWD Media. Way to go, Adam! From WWD Media:
The guests he’s been most excited to meet include Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, whom he asked to make out his copy of “All the President’s Men” to “the Woodstein of ‘The Daily Show.’” To which Carl Bernstein replied, “How do we know you’re the Woodstein of ‘The Daily Show?’”
Maybe because this “quasi journalist” (his words) does the legwork, like calling the Joint Committee on Taxation to get data on pork-barrel spending. He expects the same scrupulousness in a story about him: “Don’t be like The New York Times Magazine lady and redact everything,” he says. And he frets, often, about whether his comments merit printing. “Is this OK? Is this good copy?…I know all the phrases.”
Samantha Bee and Jason Jones(Correspondents, The Daily Show)
- By now, I’m sure you know about this, but The Daily Show is bidding adieu to two of its longtime correspondents, Samantha Bee and Jason Jones. As reported by Variety and a number of other sources, Sam and Jason are set to star in a new segment of a CBS sitcom, and we wish them the best.
Rob Riggle (Correspondent, The Daily Show)
- CBS is using The Daily Show as quite the breeding ground for talent lately; Rob Riggle has also signed a deal to develop a show of his own. Variety reports:
Riggle said he’s kicking around several ideas at the moment, one of which may touch upon his background as a major in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve …
Jon really lets the correspondents have free rein,” Riggle said. “He lets you stretch your legs and find your voice. It’s been a great two and a half years.”
Good luck, Rob!
John Hodgman (Contributor, The Daily Show)
- John’s new book (More Information Than You Require) hits the shelves this week, and you’d better be excited about it. The promotional blitz is in full swing, and I’m loving it. Here’s a fun Q&A from Time and a video from MSNBC’s great new Rachel Maddow Show.
