Archive for Guest Alert

Hey, y’all, I know Val usually does the honors on previewing guests, but I hope you all will forgive me for handling this one early because I’m just tickled pink over it. See, a couple of days ago, I noticed a tweet from Rebecca Skloot, author of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, announcing that she would be a guest on The Colbert Report on March 16th.

Being the hopeless bookworm that I am, I immediately let out a thoughtless “whoo hoo!” in my office, because I’d been reading this book during my morning commute over the last week. I just finished it yesterday, and it’s outstanding. The New York Times ran several reviews of the book last month, and DB and I had actually emailed each other at the time to express our hopes that Ms. Skloot would show up on The Colbert Report.

For those of you who might be interested, I strongly recommend you read the various reviews and articles from The New York Times (try this one or this one). Ms. Skloot’s book asks hard but incredibly timely questions about race, class, privacy, consent and medical ethics. Henrietta was a black woman from an uneducated family whose cells were obtained in an era when “informed consent” was not required. The development of HeLa was invaluable in fighting diseases like polio, but the historical context (although a different type of research, it took place at the same time as the infamous Tuskegee syphilis study) underscores questions about how scientific discoveries were and are made. Who currently benefits — and who should — from medical research (particularly with respect to the increasingly-common pharmaceutical practice of patenting genes)? How do you balance the need to keep access to research open while respecting the rights of individuals to control their own cells? There’s so much food for thought in this book.

I have no idea how the interview will turn out and what they’ll have time for on the show, but I’m over the moon about seeing this author on the guest list.

(Season’s) Greetings, everyone!

In honor of Elvis Costello’s upcoming visit to The Colbert Report, I thought I’d give “There are Much Worse Things to Believe In” another listen. Not surprisingly, it’s just as sweet a tune as it was last year. Please enjoy this little pick-me-up as you await tonight’s show:

Oooh! This is excellent. When Stephen announced that the Colbert Nation was going to sponsor US Speedskating, one of my first reactions was, “I really hope they bring Joey Cheek back to the show.”

And tonight, I see this:

Joey Cheek

Yay! That guy is a real class act. An Olympic gold medalist and humanitarian, he’s the kind of spokesman any organization would be proud to have. (And, let’s face it, he’s delightfully easy on the eyes.)

What a great way to keep the US Speedskating sponsorship effort in the spotlight.

I’m really, really looking forward to Cheek’s upcoming appearance. If you missed his last visit to The Report, watch it here:

… which means that Stephen Colbert’s guests are tweeting their way to the studio:

Shashi Tharoor

Sanjay Gupta

The ever-urbane Mr. Tharoor seems quite confident (his previous visits have certainly gone well), but Dr. Gupta sounds a bit nervous — perhaps he fears that Stephen will take issue with the title of his new book!

Yay! Another great musical guest appearance seems to be in the works for The Colbert Report:

Carly Simon Planning First Ever Shows in Europe
By Dean Goodman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – “Anticipation,” indeed.

. . .

To coincide with the album’s October 27 release in the United States, she plans to leave her home on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, off the coast of Boston, to perform in New York on both ABC’s “Good Morning America” and NBC’s “Today.”

Appearances on CBS “Late Show With David Letterman” — “when he gets himself together” — and Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” are also on the cards.

Okay, I work pretty hard nowadays at not predicting what’s going to be on the shows (or whether to expect Stephen to sing with his guests), and I’m going to try to keep that pattern going. That said, I’ve had “You’re so Vain” in my head all day, and … well, it’s not a bad song to hear, and we know “Stephen” appreciates it. I’m just sayin’.

Those of you keeping tabs on these things have probably noticed that tonight’s guest is Arne Duncan, the Secretary of Education. Well, here’s one that should be right up the alley of our readers in the education biz (or anyone with an interest), from This Week in Education:

TV: Colbert Report Needs Questions For Duncan Interview Tonight
October 5, 2009 | Posted At: 09:10 AM | Author: Alexander Russo | Category: On Maryland Avenue

Writers from the staff of The Colbert Report have contacted me asking for help with tonight’s interview with Education Secretary, Arne Duncan. They need questions and jokes for Colbert to ask. I’ve only got a couple. Can you help out?

. . .

Go here to read some proposed questions

Unfortunately, the only thing that I can think of relates to a certain tragic occurrence that’s been in the news lately; I’d like to know whether and to what extent Sec. Duncan works with other governmental departments (state and federal) to address issues of student safety — both at school and traveling to and from classes — which have to be on the minds of a lot of families that live in more troubled neighborhoods. That doesn’t seem a very good topic for The Colbert Report, though, so maybe some of our readers could add suggestions (doing so over on the linked post would be a good idea).

Hello, all, and welcome to another week of Colbert Report goodies.

I have to say, I’m feeling a little bit anxious for/sympathetic toward tonight’s guest, Austan Goolsbee, if for no other reason than it can’t be easy to be scheduled for the first show back after last week’s historic USO trip. That said, it sounds like Mr. Goolsbee is used to operating under challenging circumstances. Better yet, he has a background in improv, which means we could be in for a really interesting interview. From the Chicago Tribune, here’s a profile of tonight’s guest:

Profile: U. of C.’s Austan Goolsbee looks to infuse economic adviser’s job with edgy wit
The onetime improv student takes a few punches and throws back one-liners in support of President Obama and White House policy
By Mike Dorning | Washington Bureau
June 15, 2009

WASHINGTON — In his barely decorated office, beside a picture of him teaching class in a tuxedo on his wedding day, Austan Goolsbee has a black-and-white photo of Muhammad Ali.

“My goal,” explained the lanky University of Chicago professor, now on leave to work as one of President Barack Obama’s senior aides, “had always been to be the Muhammad Ali of economic advisers … to bring a certain humor or style to an otherwise not-so-glamorous line of work.”

In the frenetic arena of the 24-hour cable news networks, Goolsbee has become a ubiquitous presence defending the president and his economic policies. A onetime improv comic and former college debate champ, he counterattacks Obama’s critics with wit and a sometimes caustic edge.

On Monday, he’ll be on the air again, this time with Stephen Colbert on the Comedy Central show ” The Colbert Report.”

. . .

During an interview in mid-May, he was contemplating the invitation to appear on “The Colbert Report.”

“There’s a real danger of looking like an idiot,” he said. But, he noted, “Most folks don’t read policy fact sheets. If we want them to hear it, sometimes the only way is to explain it while being mocked by a comedian.”

Read the full profile here

I’ll be interested in hearing what Mr. Goolsby has to say; I like that he acknowledges the way that these shows can be a platform for getting a message out, even if it means allowing the host to make a few jokes at his expense. And I’ll be very interested in seeing whether he can keep up with Stephen’s wit; it’s not always a given that the people who make policy are able to discuss it in a popular forum like The Report’s.

Hat tip to Jennie for the link!
