FAN ART: Duct Tape Stephen Colbert

Posted by: DB | Comments (7)

Just saw this pic over at the ColbertNation.com forums, and thought you all might enjoy this fun piece of art. Artist Chad Smith has began a series of portraits titled “Bipartisanship“, composed entirely of different colors of duct tape. This is the portrait Chad created of Stephen Colbert.

zeitgeist2Greetings, Zoners! It’s been… well, way too long since I did one of these. I was grateful that this was a break week for the show, because quite honestly I needed a quiet week myself to recover from my cousin’s wedding and a pretty mean hangover a very bad cold. After sleeping for half the day today, I feel a little more like myself, and ready to tackle all the Colbertocentric news that’s been piling up in my inbox. Not a minute too soon, either, because some of these news items were starting to get a little dry and shriveled around the edges. So just in time for the show’s return on Monday, I present your zeitgeist for October 24th.

A Colbert Christmas

  • Pre-Order A Colbert Christmas – Comedy Central Insider blog: It’s eight days before Halloween, and that can only mean one thing: Time to start your holiday shopping. And this year, there’s no better way to say “Happy 2009th!” to God’s only begotten son than by pre-ordering A Colbert Christmas on iTunes. (Expected release date November 23, 2009; price: $9.99)

Charity auction

  • Meet Stephen Colbert on the set of The Colbert Report: Bids are currently being accepted for four VIP tickets to a TCR taping, a backstage tour, and a meet & greet with Stephen Colbert. Bidding ends on Oct. 28th; the current high bid is $550. The auction is part of the Chevy Chase Green School Auction, and benefits the Green Community Schools initiative, which you can read about here.

Stephen Colbert by Stan Murmur

Sometimes a story comes along that is so unique, it simply has to be shared. First, let’s start with the basics. This portrait is being sold on eBay, and all proceeds are being donated to one of Stephen’s favorite charities, DonorsChoose.org. Sounds good so far, right?

Except this is no ordinary fan portrait. The artist, Stan Murmur, was an art teacher but was fired for creating portraits such as this, as well as nature art such as butterflies and flowers. But why was he fired, you ask? It’s not the subject, it’s the creation process. His paint? Acrylic. The brush? His body. Specifically, his butt.

Yes. This is a painting done by someone’s butt. I’m so not kidding.

The part that is trippy is how this guy got fired. The school district where he taught was aware of his extracurricular art career for years, but was not fired until a video surfaced of him demonstrating his, um, technique. The ACLU has taken up his cause for free expression speech, and hopefully there will be some kind of resolution where he will find a way to continue his artistic expression in his own, unique way.

But for now, he has his art. And as a teacher and former Marine, Stan came up with the idea of creating this portrait in order to support public schools that service military families through Colbert’s “Support our Troops” campaign at DonorsChoose.org. So if you’ve ever wanted a truly one-of-a-kind portrait of Stephen Colbert, now would be a good time to bid.

FAN ART – Lego ‘Colbert Report’ set

Posted by: DB | Comments (7)

I love Lego fan art. The piece by guest Nathan Sawaya was breathtaking, and I also loved the Lego Green Screen Challenge and the Colbert portrait. But this is the first time I’ve ever seen the ENTIRE ‘Colbert Report’ desk set replicated in Legos!

Here’s what creator Tommy Williamson had to say about the creation:

-Is this a real set or something you created?
    I built it from scratch.

-How long did it take you to make it?
about a year and a half.

-How many bricks are in it?
I have no idea, truly. Perhaps I’ll make an estimate someday.

-Have you sent these pictures to Comedy Central or Stephen?
yes, I tracked down an email address and sent them.

    -How big is it?
    About 3 1/2 feet wide

Click on the picture for the high-resolution version. Also, make sure you go to his Flickr set to see high-res picture of the detail that went into the making of this art. My two favorite pieces of detail are the Eagle’s Nest, and the WristSTRONG bracelet and body outline on the floor. Okay, that’s three, but this is SERIOUSLY cool!

Thanks to Tommy for letting me know about his amazing creation, which he will feature at BrickCon 2009 next month!

The Great Luke Ski

The Great Luke Ski

I think it’s fairly common knowledge that before I participated in this fandom, I was very active in the “Weird Al” Yankovic fandom. One of the more interesting people I met while participating in that fandom was The Great Luke Ski. He’s a performance artist, who sings a subgenre of folk called Filk – basically, nerd parody songs. When he performed at Alcon 2000 [the second "Weird Al" fan convention], me and my buddy Sean and a few other people threw what must have been about 50 pairs of panties onto the stage during Luke’s finale. From what I hear, he kept every pair. My husband and I even went out with him and his wife and our old buddy Keeter to play pool on State Street in Madison, Wisconsin one night when we were in town. And my husband was only my boyfriend at the time, so it’s been a while.

So I’m looking on Twitter, seeing if anything interesting had been tweeted about Stephen, and lo and behold, there’s my old buddy Luke, singing about Stephen Colbert. I just have to share it with everyone – I hope you enjoy it!

For those of you fans of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ who have been faithfully reading the “Season 8″ comic books, you’ll love this little vignette featuring Harmony the vampire on the set of the ‘Colbert Report’. And I use that term loosely, considering that “Stephen Colbert” sounds nothing like Stephen Colbert. But points for being an it-getter, Dark Horse! And talk about being an enviable fictional character -first a relationship with Spike, and now a guest appearance on the ‘Colbert Report’? The undead have all the luck.

FAN ART – The Stephen Colbert Beehive

The bees are coming and going FROM HIS MOUTH!!

The bees are coming and going FROM HIS MOUTH!!

How cool/crazy is this artwork?! Colbert Nation member and avid bee-thusiast Susan M. Brackney, author of “Plan Bee: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Hardest-Working Creatures on the Planet”, has made the most unique piece of fan art I have ever seen. It’s a beehive, with a picture of Stephen Colbert painted on the side. And the bees go in and out of the hive THROUGH STEPHEN COLBERT’S MOUTH!! Holy cow! At the end, there’s a long shot of the picture and the bees. I just couldn’t look away. I also learned quite a bit about beekeeping and honeybee hives. Knowledge is power!

How amazingly interesting, Susan, thanks for posting this video on YouTube!

Fan Art – Stephen Colbert, High and Tight

Posted by: DB | Comments (4)

I really liked this fan art of Stephen Colbert done with his new military buzz cut. This was created by Chris Seddon, a professor at Sacramento City College, and was originally found through The Ram blog (which also had some very nice words to say about Stephen and his Iraq trip).

More of Seddon’s art can be seen at his QuIrKy PiXel blog.
