‘Fat Shame’ and a Fat Baby

Posted by: Ms Interpreted | Comments (17)

During a badly needed break at work today, I decided to take a peek at which Colbert Report was shown on the rerun last night, and I saw that it was the one featuring Amy Farrell and the discussion Stephen and Amy had on weightism. I’m glad I did, because I forgot to post it at the time, but there was actually a follow up Q&A with Prof. Farrell in the Sentinel Online (h/t Jennie), and there’s some fun stuff in it:

5 Questions: Dickinson professor talks interview on ‘Colbert Report’
By Naomi Creason, Sentinel Reporter, October 16, 2009

When Amy Farrell contributed to “The Fat Studies Reader,” she didn’t anticipate showing up on prime-time television to talk about national issues.

. . .

Question: What question were you not expecting?

Farrell: “I wasn’t expecting what he started off with — ‘Let’s get our cards down on the table. I’m fat, you’re fat.’ I wasn’t expecting it at all. I just started laughing. You just never know where he’s going to go.

“That day, I don’t think I’ve ever been more insulted in my life. But it was very fun to be there.”

. . .

I quite liked that Colbert Report interview for two reasons. First, I liked it because it acknowledged the weight problem that America is struggling with, but it also talked about a person’s overall health as being more than just a measure of weight.

The second reason I liked it was that it made me think of this Exit 57 sketch, in which a hilariously cruel Stephen proves that he can be quite the fierce defender of at least one “little butterball”:

Nice! Props to DB for pointing out that Rolling Stone, in addition to releasing a Q&A teaser and cover shot, also did a walkthrough of Stephen’s pre-Report days.

Martin Schoeller 'Rolling Stone' photo - Stephen Colbert

Before Stephen Colbert was a beloved political satirist and Peabody-winning grizzly bear detractor, he was an actor and comedian shuffling his way through various sketch shows and under-the-radar cameos. His stoic deadpan and occasional bouts of bluster were already present in the roles he would take on before The Colbert Report premiered in 2005, revealing an actor with Hartman-esque range aching for a breakout role. Rolling Stone takes a look back at the pre-fame Colbert with some classic clips waiting to be dredged up for his next Green Screen Challenge.

Nice job, Rolling Stone. You missed a few clips (that one from Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn is hard to get hold of, and I suppose Bewitched should have been included if The Great New Wonderful was), but this is pretty comprehensive. I kind of wish they’d linked Stephen’s “real newsman” Good Morning America report, though — it’s so funny watching him trying to be serious.

Happy birthday, Paul Dinello!

I don’t know why it makes me grin so to think that Jon Stewart and Paul Dinello both have birthdays today, but it does. What a happy coincidence to think that two of the entertainers that have made me smile the most in recent years have birthdays today!

One nice thing about vacations, I have lots of time to look up old videos that make me laugh. This one is always going to do the trick. I don’t know how long it’ll be before they yank it off of my account, so please enjoy “Roofers” from Exit 57 while you can:

Salmon

Got this e-mail from MsInterpreted a couple of days ago, and it amused me so I’m sharing:

Okay, so this shouldn’t be so funny to me (it isn’t actually funny), but when I saw this headline on CNN, Billions of jellyfish wipe out salmon farm, all I could think of was that Exit 57 clip, “Trouble at the Salmon Farm” .
