Stephen Colbert in the Zeitgeist – September 27, 2009
Posted by: | Comments
Happy Sunday, Zoners! I hope you’re all enjoying a nice weekend. It’s ark-building weather where I am, but you can’t have everything, right? I mean, where would you put it all? Anyway… it’s time for a peek at the latest Colbert news, so here’s your zeitgeist for September 27th.
Colbert Report writers at the Paley Center
- For those of you in the New York area, or able to travel there, you might still be able to pick up tickets for a program featuring the TCR writers at the Paley Center for Media on Sunday, November 7 at 5:00 pm. The program is The Truthiness Behind the Lines: An In-Depth Look Behind the Scenes with The Colbert Report Writers, and it’s described as a discussion of “the process of turning terrifying news into hilarious comedy.”
The Emmys, and TCR’s lack of them
I know that not winning an Emmy gives “Stephen” plenty to be enraged about on the show, but this year seemed to be an especially deep disappointment because they did win an award last year. Several articles about the Emmys also expressed the belief that TCR was passed over unfairly this year.
- Why does ‘Amazing Race’ keep winning the Emmy? Why doesn’t anyone gripe about ‘The Daily Show’s’ romp? – LA Times, The Envelope
“Oh, yeah, Stephen Colbert is also in [the best variety series] category and behind a desk, but as brilliant as his show is (clearly superior to the excellent “Daily Show,” methinks), he’s just too silly, so voters don’t take him seriously in this program category. However, he did beat “The Daily Show” for variety writing last year, so he’s a threat.” (One of the comments claims that TCR “will always remain an appendage of the Daily Show.” Maybe that’s why the academy voters don’t take it seriously enough to give them the Emmy for best variety series? I’m starting to wonder if that’s the case.)
- Television Thanks You for Watching - New York Times: Mike Hale makes a passing reference to TCR’s Emmy snub (emphasis mine).
“‘The Daily Show’s’ Jon Stewart, accepting the award for variety show (snatched from the more deserving ‘Colbert Report’), merely made a joke about watching the football game on NBC.”
Reminiscing about Chicago
- Stars turn out to Hollywood event for Chicago’s celebs – Chicago Sun Times
“At a Santa Monica hotel, R.J. Melman ran into Stephen Colbert — who reminded the son of Lettuce Entertain You founder Rich Melman that the comic had worked lunches at Lettuce’s Scoozi! restaurant, back when he was starting out at Second City. “I never made more than $200 a week,” zinged Colbert, who now, of course, can drop two C-notes on lunches without blinking an eye.”
Interview with Kyp Malone from TV on the Radio
- Catching up with… Rain Machine’s Kyp Malone – Paste magazine
“Paste: One of the great moments of TV on the Radio’s appearance on The Colbert Report earlier this year was Stephen reaching over and stroking your beard. Do you feel violated?
Malone: He asked me. Being on TV maybe changed things a little bit. I don’t know why exactly it does, but it does. It seemed like it would make it more compelling to say yes than to say no. We had talked a little bit beforehand. I like him as a satirist, but he also seemed like a very good person. It was very comfortable to be around him backstage.”
The Psychology of Truthiness
- The Dangers of “Truthiness” (part 1 of 9) – Psychology Today, Moral Landscapes blog: This is the first installment of an examination of the concept of “truthiness,” why it’s bad, and how easy it is to fall into that trap. An interesting read, and not too academic.
Funny pic of the day
- I have so many jokes to go along with this pic, yet none of them are appropriate for a family-friendly blog. C’est la vie.

(h/t DB, Ms I, Jennie, Erica M. for the pic, everyone who sent the info for the Paley Center, and especially one of our international Zoners, RTS from Sri Lanka, for the link to the Kyp Malone interview)

Gift from ‘The Colbert Report’ to ‘The Daily Show’ on its Emmy win
Posted by: | CommentsI noted this in a comment to the previous post but, on reflection, I thought it would be better to break it out into its own post. According to some audience members from last night’s Daily Show taping, the pre-toss banter between Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert included a truly hilarious tidbit. It’s a smidge less family-friendly than what we usually post here, so I’m hiding it behind the fold. You really owe it to yourself to read it, though. I wonder how one commissions a cake like that … :)

VIDEO: Writers’ montages from Emmy nominees 2009
Posted by: | CommentsThe montage clip of the nominees in the category of “Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Series” is one of the highlights of the Emmys, for me, every year. For those of you who missed it, we’ve managed to locate a clear copy of the clip. Nicely done, all!
Hard as it was to see Stephen’s team passed by this year, I’ve got to congratulate the folks from The Daily Show once again. Jon Stewart “pulling a sincerity muscle” last night to acknowledge his crew was also pretty sweet and, well, lovely.

Ex-’Singled Out’ host writes open letter to Stephen Colbert
Posted by: | CommentsThis is hilarious! From an open letter Chris Hardwick (formerly of MTV’s Singled Out) posted on Nerdist:
AN OPEN LETTER: You Were ME Once, Colbert!!!
by CHRIS HARDWICK on SEPTEMBER 21, 2009Dear Stephen Colbert,
Fun Emmy show last night, huh? NPH was fantastic and good times seemed to be the theme of the night. So, what happened? Why was our eye contact so weird? Was it because it happened in the men’s room? I was that guy in a suit that you locked onto for a second, raised an eyebrow and then scowled as you breezed past to “dry your wet hands.” Did you forget? You portrayed me!
. . .
You really need to read the rest of the letter to understand the extent of Hardwick’s chagrin, but he doesn’t expect you to take his word on it all; he attaches the proof here:
Well done, sir.
H/t to DB and Twitter user aslann1211!

Thoughts on the show: The post-Emmy post
Posted by: | CommentsWell, kids, another Emmy year has come and gone. This time, Stephen did lose to the guy with claws for hands (and no offense to Hugh Jackman, but I really was rooting for “Much Worse Things”). We never like to see Stephen and his team go home empty-handed, but we’re genuinely happy for Jon and The Daily Show crew. To wrap things up, here are a few more pics from the evening:
Congratulations to Jon and his “ninety writers”! I’m looking forward to seeing what they all say when the shows come back tomorrow night. Jon did a little interview with Access Hollywood after the ceremony, discussing the win and the Emmy “fort” he’s building. I can’t embed it, but you can watch it here.
What did all of you think about the telecast? Did you enjoy the host? I was highly amused by the Dr. Horrible appearance; what was your favorite part? I’m sure we’ll all be picking out our high and lowlights until next year’s show, so have at it in the comments.

Eye Candy: Red carpet shots of Stephen Colbert (and the lovely Evie!)
Posted by: | CommentsHope you all are enjoying the E! coverage so far (I’d enjoy it more with less Seacrest, but what can you do?), watching all the pretty people arriving. A few of them have complained about the heat, and I have to admit, Stephen looks a little warm here. But he and his wife are still gorgeous — c’mon, how great does Evie look in that dress?!

Emmy Night 2009
Posted by: | Comments
Holy cow, it’s that time of the year again – EMMY NIGHT! We’re so excited for Stephen and Team Colbert as they walk the red carpet and get ready for the biggest award night of the year.
This is how we’re going to do things around here. All of the Zoners are encouraged to chat throughout the show in the comments here, and we will be letting people know here as soon as the award winners are announced.
We’ll also be doing live reporting of any interesting appearances on the Emmy red carpet, from the E! red carpet pre-show, and if Jon or Stephen end up on any of the “surprises”, we’ll report that too (they’re not scheduled to be presenting this year).
All of the winners will be behind the cut, so please, join in the conversation and the community as we celebrate the 2009 Emmy Awards!
