Six Degrees: Articles and videos from ‘Daily Show’ peeps
Posted by: | Comments
Hello, boys and girls. I know Tiger usually does these now, but there’s been so much news coming in on our favorite people from The Daily Show that I thought I’d throw a few links together while we await her next post.
Let’s get things started with a few items featuring Jon Stewart’s recent trip to the Kennedy Center Honors, where he helped to pay tribute to honoree Bruce Sprinsteen. First off, check out this photo of Jon and his wife, Tracey, on the red carpet. How fabulous does she look? I love that Jon looks like he can hardly believe he’s there with that gorgeous woman. The Washington Post did a general write-up of the event here; NorthJersey.com went into more detail about Jon’s tribute to Bruce here. I love Jon’s quote that “When you listen to Bruce Springsteen, you weren’t a loser, you were a character in an epic poem about losers.” Nicely put, Mr. Stewart. CBS will air footage from the event on December 29th.
If you’re in the mood for more from John Hodgman, Larry Wilmore, Samantha Bee, DJ Javerbaum and John Oliver, then click past the jump!

SIX DEGREES: David Javerbaum booksigning at Powell’s on 11/8
Posted by: | CommentsIf you’re in or around Portland, Oregon, you’re not going to want to miss the book signing event featuring David Javerbaum and his new book “What to Expect When You’re Expected: A Fetus’s Guide to the First Three Trimesters“. The event will be held at the Powell’s City of Books at Burnside this Sunday, November 8th at 3p.
The Oregonian posted an interview publicizing the event that dropped some very interesting bits about Javerbaum’s career, and some interesting news snippets as well:
‘Daily Show’ scribe takes on books, Colbert and baby talk
By Jeff Baker, The Oregonian
November 04, 2009, 11:25AM…
“The great thing about Stephen is he can do anything,” Javerbaum said from his office in New York. “He can sing, he can do anything the material requires, and that’s a wonderful thing for a writer. If you want him to juggle on roller skates, he can probably do it.”
Javerbaum doesn’t write much for Colbert, but he still keeps busy on “The Daily Show.” As its former executive producer and head writer, he used to be at the center of the action but joked that his title is now “the emeritus” and his role is “to grumble about how everything used to be better.”
“When actually it’s better than it’s ever been, and it’s a joy and a privilege to work here,” he added, sincerely and a little too quickly, in case Stewart was walking by. What he really does now is write for the show — he was working on a piece on the Obama administration’s fight with Fox News — and write books. His big future project is a sequel to “America (the Book): A Citizen’s Guide to Democracy Inaction,” the fabulously successful textbook parody he wrote with Stewart and Ben Karlin. It’s taking up most of his time, but not so much that he can’t promote his big current project, “What to Expect When You’re Expected.”
Ooh, a sequel to “America (The Book)”? Sign me up!

Six Degrees: Daily Show Edition

Once again, our favorite fearless interviewers are out and about, sharing their talent in a variety of venues. Check out what they’ve done, or possibly find an opportunity to see one of them for yourself! (Emphatic h/t to MsI and DB throughout.)
Samantha Bee (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)
- Since the last time I’ve mentioned it in Six Degrees, Sam’s recently finished her role in the off-Broadway show
Love, Loss, and What I Wore. She was interviewed twice as a result of her involvement with that show. In this interview, you can learn a lot about her experiences growing up, long before she was being funny on The Daily Show. For a rather amusing discussion of clothing, among other reflections, you can check out this interview. - If you didn’t see the show in New York, another way you can see Sam is at The Connecticut Forum’s “It’s Satire!” show November 14th, 8:00 PM at The Bushnell Theater in Hartford. You can find ticket information at their website. David Javerbaum, who you’ll remember as co-lyricist of A Colbert Christmas, as well as former Executive Producer of The Daily Show, will also be appearing.
- Whether you’re able to attend “It’s Satire!” or not, you can enjoy this interview by TWoP user shamskygirl. There’s discussion here of both process and gender in comedy, and Sam has some very insightful answers.
Larry Wilmore (Contributer, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)
- Larry’s book I’d Rather We Got Casinos: And Other Black Thoughts was released in January, but if you’re in Miami, you still have a chance to hear about it from the man himself. Larry is one of the many authors who will be appearing at the Miami Book Fair, which will take place November 8-15. You can find out all about the fair at its website, and although it’s not immediately obvious when Larry will be there, you can probably find most other information about the fair, and possibly more specific information will be available there soon.

Episode 5132 (10/13/2009)
Posted by: | Comments
EPISODE NUMBER: 5132 (October 13, 2009)
GUEST: David Javerbaum, Sylvia Earle
SEGMENTS: Miley Cyrus deleted her Twitter account, The WØRD: Symbol-Minded, David Javerbaum, G.E.D.
VIDEOS: Tuesday, October 13, 2009
My husband and I were eating dinner last night when he turns to me and says, “Did you hear that Miley Cyrus deleted her Twitter account? She made a video about it.” We discussed it and laughed at how such a non-news item was making such as splash. So when Stephen started off his show with the discussion of Miley’s Twitter account, we both laughed quite heartily. The introduction of Jermaine Maine was a thing of beauty, and I hope that somehow they find an excuse to drag that character (and that horrid wig) back another time or two.
I actually stayed up and watched the show last night, which is a rarity for me – I normally call it a night early and get up to watch the show around 6a. But I was really looking forward to the Javerbaum interview, and it did not disappoint. I think the most amusing part of the whole interview was watching my own Twitter follow feeds explode with the chorus of “I didn’t know Javerbaum was so CUTE!” His segment was very amusing as well. My favorite part was the highlighting of the author picture on the book. That is so very wrong, yet at the same time so very, very right. I’m definitely going to be picking up What to Expect When You’re Expected this weekend!
Sylvia Earle was a very unique guest. Her demeanor was one of someone who was intelligent and gentle and like the ultimate grandma. It was an interesting character study to see Stephen seriously dial “Stephen” down for this interview with this quiet soul. And let me give some serious props to the person who chose to show a very bad 5-gallon tank with tetras and other hobby fish in the background – a subtle but brilliant set move.
What did you enjoy about the episode tonight?

- Folks, this is a twagedy.
- Miley has always been my favorite rapper. She stays away from violent messages, foul language and rappers.
- The real fun for Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana fans will be wondering if the tweets are from me or from my fun loving, pop-star alter ego Jermaine Maine – a totally, totally famous rock star who for no legally actionable reason, knows a ton about Miley Cyrus.
- You will be avenged, Archduke Ferdinand! What? We were on the other side? You had it coming, buddy!
- This is a war memorial, not a box of Lucky Charms. [Cross Far More Nutritious]
- If it helps, don’t think of it as the cross that Jesus died on, think of it as a giant T, for “thanks, Jews”!
- China has a fifth of the world’s people, and many of them are not on death row.
- And a new Pew research report claims that nearly one in four people in the world are Muslim. And if you consider that the world is 70% covered by water, that can only mean one thing – aquamuslims.
- Stephen: You know, what might have thrown me was your author photo. You look a little like Antonio Banderas from “The Mask Of Zorro.”
Javerbaum: Yeah, I get that a lot. - Javerbaum: But never forget you are a miracle. A miracle that makes mommy vomit.
- For instance, I am 45, and I’m not even close to being weaned.
But that Ashton Kutcher is still doing it, right? Then I’m in!

Six Degrees: Interview with “Colbert Christmas” lyricist David Javerbaum

I cannot tell you how excited I was to land an interview with David Javerbaum. In addition to being the Executive Producer of ‘The Daily Show with Jon Stewart’, he managed to find the time to work with Stephen Colbert and Fountain of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger on “A Colbert Christmas – The Greatest Gift of All!” Please enjoy the full interview, after the break!

Six Degrees: What’s up with (some of) Stephen Colbert’s colleagues?
Posted by: | Comments
Howdy, all! I’ve been swamped lately (and too burned out even to blog – horrors!), but I hope you all can forgive my neglect and enjoy a little bit of Six Degrees commentary. I can’t call it all “news” any longer — some of it’s been out for quite a while — but it may still be somewhat news-y. To business!
Jon Stewart
- You can catch Jon — his voice, anyway — this weekend when he makes a cameo (as himself) on American Dad. From the blurb on Fox.com: “Roger and Steve set their sights on fame and fortune in New York City, but it doesn’t take long for Roger to lose everything on Wall Street. Steve contemplates prostitution after Jon Stewart shoots down his comedy routine.” The scheduling info is here; thanks for the tip, Jenny with a Y!
- Jon also lends his voice to Twisted – A Balloonamentary, narrating the history of balloon animals. You can check out screening and/or DVD info here.
David Javerbaum (Executive Producer, The Daily Show)
- You may recall that DJ Javerbaum has been a busy little bee this year; not only has he been helping to run things over at TDS, he’s been co-writing the Broadway show Cry-Baby. Now that Cry-Baby’s been nominated for a handful of Tony awards, DJ has penned an amusing letter to the prospective voters. Here’s just one of the “invalid” reasons to vote for his show: “It is customary for winners to thank their families during their acceptance speeches. However, if given a chance to make such a speech, Adam [Schlesinger, co-writer] and I are willing to thank yours.” Read the full letter here.
Lewis Black (Contributor, The Daily Show)
- Lewis has a new book — Me of Little Faith
– coming out on June 3rd, and if you follow that link, Amazon’s got some video for you. To coincide with the book’s release, Lewis has some events planned. We mentioned his appearance at BookExpo already; here are just a couple more that I stumbled across:
- June 7th at the First Parish Church Meetinghouse (sponsored by the Harvard Book Store), Boston, MA
- June 10th at the Sixth and I Historic Synagogue (co-sponsored by Politics & Prose and DC Comedy Fest), Washington, DC
- The Onion A.V. Club posted an interview with Lewis last week, too; he talks about the book, his show and more. Read it here.
Garrett Reisman (“Friend of the Show”)
- Okay, I don’t normally mention former show guests (there are only so many hours in my day), but Reisman was so much fun that I thought it would be worth throwing this little tidbit out there. From Marvel: “Astronaut Garrett Reisman, currently orbiting Earth in the International Space Station (ISS), apparently couldn’t wait to get back home to see Iron Man. So, he’ll be watching a copy of the film being beamed up the ISS for his viewing pleasure!” That? Is wicked cool.
Demetri Martin (Contributor, The Daily Show)
- Demetri’s got some shows at Rififi in the coming weeks, and he did a little Q&A with Gothamist in anticipation. From Gothamist: “What’s the weirdest fan interaction you’ve had? One time I was jumping on a bed and almost hit my head on a ceiling fan.” I seriously love Demetri. (Well, I already loved him because of his ridiculously cool palindrome poem, but this just reaffirms it.)
John Oliver (Correspondent, The Daily Show)
- Not too much to say about John at the moment — aside from the usual, gee, it would be great if you’d update your gig list more than once every three to six months, that is — but I happened to see him last week at the recording for “Political Animal” at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, and he was brilliantly entertaining, as ever. (And by the way, if any of you UK fans know how to get me a download of the “Political Animal” shows containing this material, I’d be very interested.)
He repeated a lot of material I’d heard before — which I’m not complaining about, as I wouldn’t continue to go to his gigs if he didn’t make me laugh, and it’s still quite hilarious — but he incorporated some new jokes, too. For those of you who know what I’m talking about, I thought the Sara Lownds bit (“Sara, oh Sara/Scorpio Sphinx in a calico dress …” — Bob Dylan) was wonderful, and his long rambles first about dollars vs. pounds and then from the end of the show were delicious!
For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, take heart, because John also dropped this little tidbit: Comedy Central was filming some “DVD extras” that night. Dare we hope that some of that material makes it onto the DVD version of his special? Because I’ll be the first to tell you, I would absolutely shell out good money for that!
Here’s my usual disclaimer: I get all of this scheduling stuff from various sources around “the internets”, NOT from the performers. Thus, I can’t really vouch for the accuracy of it all, and I’d strongly recommend contacting the venues themselves for their official information. Since I’m still a bit crazy at work and couldn’t run all the searches I’d normally do, I’m sure I’ve missed a few items; feel free to comment away if you see errors or omissions. Cheers!
UPDATED TO ADD: Oh sure, right AFTER I post this big ol’ entry … anyhow, Comedy Central Insider just noted that John Oliver (and Laura Krafft!) will perform in a gig benefitting puppies — literally — NEXT Friday (June 6th). This looks like a fantastic show, y’all (I’ll note that the only other performer in that lineup I’ve seen, Christian Finnegan, is also absolutely hilarious). BE THERE!
FURTHER UPDATED: The recurring “Tell Your Friends” show at Lolita Bar will feature Demetri Martin next Monday (June 2nd) and John Oliver the following week (June 9th). Thanks for the tip, SCORPIO!
