Archive for Demetri Martin

Ugh, the snow and wind continue to swirl here in my neck of the woods (darn you, unnamed grocery store, for continually canceling my deliveries!), and I’m having weird flashbacks to my childhood in the Upper Midwest. In an attempt to keep my mind in the present, how about some updates on some of our friends at The Daily Show and Colbert Report?

Our friends over at PBS have released another teaser ad for Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Pluto Files, which will feature any number of our favorite people (like Stephen Colbert!) when it airs. Here’s a fun snippet with Brian Williams and some guy with a little cable show, Jon Stewart.

Mr. Stewart is keeping himself busy, performing stand-up gig in Vegas over the Super Bowl weekend. The Las Vegas Review Journal featured a pretty cool article on Jon to coincide with the gig, and it’s definitely worth a read. The story he told about bombing while opening for Sheena Easton (“[S]he poked her head in my dressing room and said (he mimics her Scottish accent), ‘Don’t worry, Jon. Tomorrow is another day.’”) … ouch!

Six Degrees: Daily Show Edition

Posted by: Tiger | Comments (1)

thumb_6degrees From comedy shows to music, the Daily Show correspondents are all over these days!

John Oliver (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)

  • I know I have been making time to watch John Oliver’s New York Stand-up Show at 11 PM EST, Fridays on Comedy Central, but apparently Rob Riggle isn’t particularly interested. For two weeks in a row, he has found ways to avoid supporting John’s new show:

As Rob is so eager to mention, it seems he will be on Comedy Central Presents in a couple of months, and we’ll be sure to let you know more about that.
    (h/t: MsInterpreted)

  • Here is an interesting opportunity to see John Oliver from before he was on The Daily Show. The last acting credit John has in IMDb before The Love Guru was as a car salesman on a British medical sitcom called Green Wing. So far as I can tell, he only appeared in a few clips only one minute into the first episode of the first season called “Caroline’s First Day.” You can see it all of yourself (if you’re in the US), as the entire series is now on Hulu. I have not watched the entire episode myself, but it looks like it could be a good show.
  • John recently appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Demetri Martin (Former Contributor, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)

  • Important Things with Demetri Martin is coming back for a second season, which is good new for many of you, I’m sure. While I didn’t watch the every show, all the clips I was able to catch were excellent! Although the shows won’t be airing for a while, there may still be tickets available for tapings in San Francisco in mid-February. Follow the link and if you do reserve tickets, let others know it’s possible in the comments.

John Hodgman (Contributor, The Daily Show with John Stewart)

  • If you’re in the Bay Area and you can’t see Demetri Martin’s show, you also have John Hodgman coming to you soon! He will be at the SF Sketchfest 2010 at 2 PM on January 30th at Cobb’s, where he will be conversing with Dave Eggers. To find out more about John’s appearance and the rest of the festival, which will have a long of other great comedians, check out this article.

Wyatt Cenac (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)

  • Although it’s too late to see the show, there was a great interview with him in preparation for that gig. There’s talk of the movie Wyatt starred in, Medicine for Melancholy and the way The Daily Show approaches cable news. He also mentions the field producers, of whom I’m far more aware since I started following Miles Kahn on Twitter. (h/t: MsInterpreted)

Aasif Mandvi (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)

  • The National, an English-language paper from Abu Dhabi, UAE, has a great article about Aasif. It discusses the film Today’s Special, which is based on his one-man show Sakina’s Restaurant. Given the setting of the film, there is much discussion of food in culture, particularly Indian culture. Aasif also talks about being involved with The Daily Show while also acting in films.

Ed Helms (Former Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)

  • Comedy Central Insider has some great YouTube videos of this great former correspondent showing off in way we’re not used to: on musical instruments. You can watch him playing the banjo while singing along, or playing the piano while chatting along. These are far more authentic uses of instrumental props than when Colbert and Dinello sang with the bassoons. (h/t: MsInterpreted.)

Hey, everyone, looks like it’s “clean out my inbox” day again, and I’ve got a lot of updates and tips to pass along to you all.

On a more personal note, I’m currently digging out from underneath a cartoonishly large workload, which was itself just buried under a new mountain of tasks today, so I’m really not sure when I’ll have time to do another one of these posts. I say this to encourage you to leave any additional tips and/or links in the comments to this post, as I suspect a baby born today might reach the legal drinking age before I have free time to do another Six Degrees entry. That said, I’m taking the time to do this one, so read onward!

The Daily Show correspondents

  • If you TiVo the shows and skip the commercials, you might have missed this: The Daily Show is going to be live on Tuesday for Inauguration Day, with the correspondents weighing in from Washington, DC. This is one of the few times that DC looks like the cool place to be, so stay tuned. [Now I'm *really* peeved that I'll have to work that day ... but no way I'm doing it from DC! My office is two blocks from the White House, and I refuse to wade into that insanity if I won't even get the chance to see the party. Any of you TDS people who tire of the crowds are welcome to join me at my place, where I'll be grumbling about my job on that otherwise festive day.]

More from Eric Drysdale, J.J. Sedelmaier, Pete Grosz, Laura Krafft, John Oliver, Amy Sedaris, Demetri Martin and Ben Karlin after the fold!

John Oliver (Writer/Correspondent, The Daily Show)

As ever, please confirm the scheduled lineups directly with the venues; we do not have any official information on the performers’ schedules. In addition, I’m more than a little swamped with some end of the year work on one of my cases, so I may not be able to keep up with posts about your favorite “Six Degrees” personnel; please leave tips and updates in the comments to this post.

Thanks, everyone!

Howdy, all! I’ve been swamped lately (and too burned out even to blog – horrors!), but I hope you all can forgive my neglect and enjoy a little bit of Six Degrees commentary. I can’t call it all “news” any longer — some of it’s been out for quite a while — but it may still be somewhat news-y. To business!

Jon Stewart

  • You can catch Jon — his voice, anyway — this weekend when he makes a cameo (as himself) on American Dad. From the blurb on Fox.com: “Roger and Steve set their sights on fame and fortune in New York City, but it doesn’t take long for Roger to lose everything on Wall Street. Steve contemplates prostitution after Jon Stewart shoots down his comedy routine.” The scheduling info is here; thanks for the tip, Jenny with a Y!
  • Jon also lends his voice to Twisted – A Balloonamentary, narrating the history of balloon animals. You can check out screening and/or DVD info here.

David Javerbaum (Executive Producer, The Daily Show)

  • You may recall that DJ Javerbaum has been a busy little bee this year; not only has he been helping to run things over at TDS, he’s been co-writing the Broadway show Cry-Baby. Now that Cry-Baby’s been nominated for a handful of Tony awards, DJ has penned an amusing letter to the prospective voters. Here’s just one of the “invalid” reasons to vote for his show: “It is customary for winners to thank their families during their acceptance speeches. However, if given a chance to make such a speech, Adam [Schlesinger, co-writer] and I are willing to thank yours.” Read the full letter here.

Lewis Black (Contributor, The Daily Show)

  • Lewis has a new book — Me of Little Faith– coming out on June 3rd, and if you follow that link, Amazon’s got some video for you. To coincide with the book’s release, Lewis has some events planned. We mentioned his appearance at BookExpo already; here are just a couple more that I stumbled across:
  • The Onion A.V. Club posted an interview with Lewis last week, too; he talks about the book, his show and more. Read it here.

Garrett Reisman (“Friend of the Show”)

  • Okay, I don’t normally mention former show guests (there are only so many hours in my day), but Reisman was so much fun that I thought it would be worth throwing this little tidbit out there. From Marvel: “Astronaut Garrett Reisman, currently orbiting Earth in the International Space Station (ISS), apparently couldn’t wait to get back home to see Iron Man. So, he’ll be watching a copy of the film being beamed up the ISS for his viewing pleasure!” That? Is wicked cool.

Demetri Martin (Contributor, The Daily Show)

  • Demetri’s got some shows at Rififi in the coming weeks, and he did a little Q&A with Gothamist in anticipation. From Gothamist: “What’s the weirdest fan interaction you’ve had? One time I was jumping on a bed and almost hit my head on a ceiling fan.” I seriously love Demetri. (Well, I already loved him because of his ridiculously cool palindrome poem, but this just reaffirms it.)

John Oliver (Correspondent, The Daily Show)

  • Not too much to say about John at the moment — aside from the usual, gee, it would be great if you’d update your gig list more than once every three to six months, that is — but I happened to see him last week at the recording for “Political Animal” at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, and he was brilliantly entertaining, as ever. (And by the way, if any of you UK fans know how to get me a download of the “Political Animal” shows containing this material, I’d be very interested.)

He repeated a lot of material I’d heard before — which I’m not complaining about, as I wouldn’t continue to go to his gigs if he didn’t make me laugh, and it’s still quite hilarious — but he incorporated some new jokes, too. For those of you who know what I’m talking about, I thought the Sara Lownds bit (“Sara, oh Sara/Scorpio Sphinx in a calico dress …” — Bob Dylan) was wonderful, and his long rambles first about dollars vs. pounds and then from the end of the show were delicious!

For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, take heart, because John also dropped this little tidbit: Comedy Central was filming some “DVD extras” that night. Dare we hope that some of that material makes it onto the DVD version of his special? Because I’ll be the first to tell you, I would absolutely shell out good money for that!

Here’s my usual disclaimer: I get all of this scheduling stuff from various sources around “the internets”, NOT from the performers. Thus, I can’t really vouch for the accuracy of it all, and I’d strongly recommend contacting the venues themselves for their official information. Since I’m still a bit crazy at work and couldn’t run all the searches I’d normally do, I’m sure I’ve missed a few items; feel free to comment away if you see errors or omissions. Cheers!

UPDATED TO ADD: Oh sure, right AFTER I post this big ol’ entry … anyhow, Comedy Central Insider just noted that John Oliver (and Laura Krafft!) will perform in a gig benefitting puppies — literally — NEXT Friday (June 6th). This looks like a fantastic show, y’all (I’ll note that the only other performer in that lineup I’ve seen, Christian Finnegan, is also absolutely hilarious). BE THERE!

FURTHER UPDATED: The recurring “Tell Your Friends” show at Lolita Bar will feature Demetri Martin next Monday (June 2nd) and John Oliver the following week (June 9th). Thanks for the tip, SCORPIO!

From Lancaster Online (internal links omitted):

Pollster takes a spin on ‘The Daily Show’
By DAVE PIDGEON, Staff
Intelligencer Journal
Published: Jan 30, 2008 1:21 AM EST

LANCASTER, Pa. – A new comedy star may be rising out of Lancaster — someone known more for commentary about legislative battles and wearing dapper pinstripe suits than making people laugh.

G. Terry Madonna, director of Franklin & Marshall College’s Center for Politics & Public Affairs, will appear as early as Thursday night on Comedy Central’s popular mock-news program “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.”

. . .

Last week, Madonna traveled with his wife, Maribeth, to Comedy Central’s New York City studios to film a segment about youth voters. He didn’t meet Stewart, the show’s star, though his wife did, briefly, in a conference room. Instead, Madonna was interviewed by “Daily Show” correspondent Demetri Martin.

. . .

A spokeswoman for “The Daily Show” declined to talk about Madonna’s appearance, saying that since the strike by the Writers Guild of America began last year, Comedy Central does not announce upcoming guests.

Madonna’s interviewer, Martin, is a young but veteran New York-based comedian who’s been contributing to “The Daily Show” since 2005. He’s appeared on late-night television shows hosted by the likes of David Letterman and once worked as a writer for “Late Night with Conan O’Brien.”

Despite the often smart-alecky tone of “The Daily Show,” Madonna said the staff is sharp both comedically and politically.

“They were very professional and very knowledgeable,” Madonna said. “I see why the show is so popular. It was very professionally done.”

With one exception: Madonna said he had a hard time acting as the “serious” expert during the two-hour taping session.

“It was intense but funny,” he said. “I had trouble when Demetri was asking questions keeping a straight face. This guy is beyond funny.”

. . .

I will second that assessment of Demetri’s comedic chops. I’ve occasionally thought that Demetri’s segments weren’t the best fit with the overall pace of The Daily Show (TDS relies more on quips, and Demetri’s generally more understated than that), but his standup is superb, and he’s absolutely brilliant in person. Also? If I ever saw him on TDS wearing the baby blue Mickey Mouse sweatshirt he was wearing when I saw him at Comix, I would be on the floor laughing.
