Here’s some awesome news for all you comedy fans in Chicago: the new list of confirmed attendees for the 50th Anniversary festivities now includes fan favorites Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell!

Old school Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert - Second City photos

From the Chicago Tribune:

Second City confirms Colbert, Carell, Belushi, Wendt, Dratch, Garlin, Vardalos, many others
Second City is later today releasing the line-up for its big 50th-anniversary mainstage show at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12. Entitled “The Second City Alumnae: For One Night Only,” the show will be staged in both of Second City’s theaters.

Here’s the latest line-up of names. It’s quite a list:

Scott Adsit, Jim Belushi, Danny Breen, Frank Caeti, Larry Joe Campbell, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Dan Castellaneta, Kevin Dorff, Robin Duke, Brian Gallivan, Martin Garcia, Jeff Garlin, Ian Gomez, Peter Grosz, Mike Hagerty, Isabella Hoffman, Bruce Jarchow, Fred Kaz, Tim Kazurinsky, Keegan Michael Key, Richard Kind, Robert Klein, David Koechner, Mina Kolb, Bob Martin, Jack McBrayer, Susan Messing, Colin Mochrie, Maribeth Monroe, Jane Morris, Bob Odenkirk, David Pasquesi, Harold Ramis, David Rasche, Horatio Sanz, Jim Staahl, Betty Thomas, Nia Vardalos, George Wendt, Fred Willard.

This is only a partial list of performers for what’s certainly going to be one of the toughest tickets of the year in Chicago. Tickets, which are $125, go on sale Thursday.

There is only one show open to the public–the late-night slot is going to be a private, alumnae-performing-for-alumnae event. But there are numerous panels and other events open to the public.

. . .

Colbert, a recent addition to the weekend, will now appear at the recently announced panel dedicated to his show. (Dec. 12 at 10 a.m).

Updates for you all, kiddies; hope there’s something in here that you all can laugh at.

Barry Julien and Scott Jacobson (writers, Colbert Report and Daily Show, respectively)

  • Sounds like Barry’s got a brief respite from his job at the Starbucks underneath Stephen’s desk. Where can you find him? In “Comedy Free Williamsburg” at Sound Fix Lodge this Wednesday night. Joining him will be Daily Show writer Scott Jacobson and several other comics. There’s more information here; drop by, if you can!

Aasif Mandvi (correspondent, The Daily Show)

  • We haven’t seen much of Aasif lately on The Daily Show, but you can still catch up with him by listening to the “Selected Shorts Podcast” this week on NPR. Aasif reads this week’s selection, Rishi Reddi’s short story “Justice Shiva Ram Murthy”, and he reads it very well. If you’ve got a spare hour, have a listen to this podcast (brought to you by the good folks at Public Radio International and Symphony Space).

Ed Helms (former correspondent, The Daily Show)

  • Congratulations to Ed Helms on scoring a leading role in the upcoming movie Hangover (with Bradley Cooper). According to the Hollywood Reporter: “[Helms and Cooper] are in final negotiations to star in director Todd Phillips bachelor-party comedy, about three friends who lose the groom at their Vegas fandango two days before the wedding. The third lead role has yet to be cast for the Warner Bros. film.” Good luck with this, Ed!

Samantha Bee (correspondent, The Daily Show)

  • Sam is featured in the “How To Wiki” of Wired magazine, and she has some advice on “How To Look Good on TV.” One of her tips caught my eye: “3. Don’t use words you don’t know — especially zeitgeist or orthogonal.”

Why does this crack me up? Well, if you read the issue of Wired in which Stephen Colbert taught us how to “Be an Expert on Anything,” you may recall that he said this:

USE THE WORD ZEITGEIST AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE. Ideally, you want to find words that sound familiar but people don’t really know their definitions: zeitgeist, bildungsroman, doppelgänger – better yet, anything Latin. But avoid paradigm. It’s so 1994. If you say the word paradigm, everybody knows you’re a poser.”

Conflicting tips, perhaps? Nah, Sam left a loophole for those people who know what those words mean. (But I’d still avoid using the word “paradigm”, if possible!)

Mitch Rouse and David Pasquesi (The Factory, Strangers with Candy)

  • We’ve mentioned here before that The Factory, the series showcasing Mitch Rouse and Dave Pasquesi, premiered on Spike TV last month. We hope you’ve been watching; the show is very funny. And I’m not sure whether you know it or not, but Spike has been featuring outtakes and deleted scenes from the show. There are several there, but this one might be my favorite (uncontrollable laughter is irresistible to me). Enjoy!

A couple of months ago, we mentioned that Mitch Rouse (Exit 57, Strangers with Candy) had a new show called The Factory that had just been picked up by Spike TV (David Pasquesi, a.k.a. “Stew, the Meat Man” is also in The Factory). Last night on TV Barn, I noticed the first review of the show:

This ain’t your older brother’s TV no more

Mitch Rouse, David Pasquesi, et al -- 'The Factory'“Factory” (9 p.m. CT Sunday, Spike TV). Honestly, I had zero expectations for this comedy, which features four slackers working in dead-end industrial jobs …

But as I moseyed through the episode, I found myself laughing harder and harder until I had to close the door to keep from disturbing others. The beauty of “Factory” is that it speaks in the minimalist lingo epitomized by those Budweiser “dude” ads, yet is so perfectly pitched and paced that after a while it becomes a real-life “Beavis and Butt-Head,” where half the entertainment value is just watching these guys talk like idiots.

Ah, that’s encouraging! Today, I read this over at the Comedy Central Insider (internal links omitted):

Spike’s Factory: The Rocktern Report
June 26, 2008 AT 02:28PM

This week, Gonzalo and I, Reggie, your loyal guide through this blog post, attended Spike’s premiere screening of Factory. Initially expecting the story of a courageous female textile worker struggling to make ends meet in a man’s world, we were pleasantly surprised to learn that Factory is actually a very funny sitcom from the mind of Strangers With Candy co-creator Mitch Rouse.

. . .

Factory is about four men working at a local factory in Illinois. Amazingly, 95% of it is improvised in the vein of Curb Your Enthusiasm. I don’t even improvise that much in my regular conversations. The most unique part about Factory is its realistic portrayal of men. You get a real sense of what it’s like when four men get together. They talk about women, they fight, they talk about women some more. They do everything guys do, including talking about women. Did I mention they talk about women? As men, Gonzalo and I could really relate. I recommend checking out Factory when it premieres Sunday, June 29th at 10:00 pm on Spike TV. Or, you can watch the pilot online right now.

The Factory debuts this Sunday on Spike TV (10:00 p.m.). If waiting that long to see it is simply unacceptable, you can watch the full episode here. For what it’s worth, I thought it was pretty funny. There was a very Strangers with Candy feel to a couple of the scenes with Mitch and Dave, although the shows really aren’t too similar. I’m eager to hear what you all think of it.

And, because you can never have too much, I’ve embedded a classic number starring Mitch Rouse, Stephen Colbert and Paul Dinello from Exit 57 after the fold.
