For those of you fans of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ who have been faithfully reading the “Season 8″ comic books, you’ll love this little vignette featuring Harmony the vampire on the set of the ‘Colbert Report’. And I use that term loosely, considering that “Stephen Colbert” sounds nothing like Stephen Colbert. But points for being an it-getter, Dark Horse! And talk about being an enviable fictional character -first a relationship with Spike, and now a guest appearance on the ‘Colbert Report’? The undead have all the luck.

VIDEO: No Fact Zone gets the Colbert Bump

Posted by: DB | Comments (43)

I’m still in total shock that for the first time since starting this fan site, our humble little blog was actually mentioned on the ‘Colbert Report’. Now, we’ve known for some time that Stephen Colbert and the ‘Colbert Report’ staff was aware of our site. We’ve been treated with nothing but respect from everyone at Comedy Central we have come in contact with, but to have Stephen mention us on the air was just almost more than I could bear.

The bump comes at the 1:14 mark.

Hey, remember when Stephen mentioned Firefox 3 on the day of its release? Well, they’re quite pleased to report that they did, indeed, see a “Colbert Bump” in downloads from his mentioning it during the broadcast.

Colbert Bump – Firefox 3 Proves its Existence

Many of us at Mozilla and within the Mozilla community were excited when Stephen Colbert gave Firefox 3 his “Colbert Bump” on the day of Firefox 3’s launch (a big thanks to Jonathan Zittrain).

. . .

Here’s what we did: we looked at downloads of Firefox 3 by users within the U.S. – and then we drilled down to a minute-by-minute view to see what, if anything, could be detected. At minute 23 of the broadcast, Colbert said, “Firefox 3 just got the Colbert Bump.” What happened next?

We saw a big spike in downloads exactly one and two minutes later:

Firefox 3 gets the Colbert Bump

. . .

That doesn’t come as a surprise to us here at NFZ, but it’s always fun to see people adding to the stockpile of evidence for Stephen’s influence (are you listening, TIME magazine?).

If you missed the segment where Stephen mentioned Firefox 3, you can watch it here:

Jonathan Zittrain — Jonathan Zittrain wants to save the good chaos of the Internet and separate it from the bad chaos that will stomp on everything.

Jones Soda introduces Colbert-themed soda?

Posted by: DB | Comments (12)

Jones Cola - Stephen Colbert AmericolaAccording to Komonews.com, it appears that Jones Cola is making an attempt to receive a little bit of the Colbert Bump. Their new marketing push is for Campaign Cola, with cola bottles featuring John McCain, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. They said this of the pictured Colbert bottle:

As a joke, the Jones Soda staff made a fourth bottle featuring the face of political humorist and faux candidate Stephen Colbert. The pop team calls it Stephen Colbert Americola.

It’s not for sale; it’s for laughs. The Jones team mailed Colbert a case of his own soda every day for 15 days, but hasn’t received a response.

Maybe they’ve been talking to Ben & Jerry’s?

The coveted ‘Colbert Bump’

Posted by: Ms Interpreted | Comments (18)

It's like a bizarro world Mt. Rushmore!
Sometimes, size matters. So who do you think got the biggest bump last night? Indecision 2008 has a poll set up here. Unfortunately, there’s no option for “Edwards if you judge by their individual segments, Obama if you’re asking about the evening, overall.” Still, it’s an interesting little poll. I wonder if Indecision can manage more respectable voter participation numbers than we see in the general election …

And thank goodness McCain wasn’t on last night, too, or we might have seen a “self-canceling vortex of Colbert Bumps“!

(Okay, I’ll admit it. I *am* interested in finding out who got the biggest bump, but I really just wanted an excuse to use that cool composite that I totally pulled from the Comedy Central Insider. It reminds me of a nutty Mt. Rushmore, and that reminds me of an old Second City sketch about “Four Stone Guys,” and that reminds me that … I live in a weird, weird little world all of my own.)

I’m putting this behind a cut out of deference to those of you in different time zones, but if you’re online at all, I’m guessing you’ve already seen this news. Rumors about tonight’s show are all over already, and I’ve gathered a few of the links for anyone wanting to see what the buzz has been so far.

The Press of Atlantic City has a story out today that continues the discussion of Stephen’s influence on voters and, more generally, of satire’s influence on news.

From The Press of Atlantic City:

The Word: Stephen Colbert. Philadelphia. Political satire. Fun.

PHILADELPHIA – The first name in television “truthiness” has made his way to Philadelphia – and on Monday, he wanted answers.

“Make an announcement right now!” Stephen Colbert, host of Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report,” demanded of his guest, Chris Matthews, who is rumored to want Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Spector’s [sic] seat. “Show some (guts)!”

Further goading the MSNBC “Hardball” host, Colbert turned to his faithful audience: The people who helped Colbert get a Ben and Jerry’s ice cream flavor (“Americone Dream”). The people who helped Colbert get a Hungarian bridge named after him. The people who helped Colbert run for president.

“Will you vote for him if he says it now?” Colbert said.

The crowd erupted with wild cheers.

. . .

The role of traditional media is changing,” [UC- San Diego Professor James] Fowler said. “They have to be more entertaining.”

The new generation of voters are proof of that.

“I do get a lot of my information from Colbert, and Stewart too,” said Justin Hortin, a 22-year-old student who attends Rutgers University in New Brunswick. He also attended Monday’s taping.

While Horton said Colbert doesn’t personally influence his vote, he did admit that a politician’s appearance on the talk show – or lack of an appearance – can change the way he thinks of that person.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter’s appearance on Monday, he said, didn’t go over very well. Hortin thought Nutter tried a little too hard to be witty.

But when Hortin’s U.S. Rep. Chris Smith, R-4, declined to appear in Colbert’s “Better Know a District” segment, it left an even bigger impression.

“He refused to go on (Colbert’s) show, so I wrote him, saying I was not going to vote for him,” Hortin said.

Former Press Secretary Tony Snow also compliments Stephen Colbert (and Jon Stewart). I’m no fan of Snow’s, but sometimes it is nice to hear praise of my favorite mock pundits coming from both sides of the aisle.

Philadelphia was once the capital of the United States, so it seems fitting that Stephen, at least temporarily, will make it the capital of the “Nation” again. As we all know by now, Stephen is taking The Colbert Report to Philadelphia for one week of shows; the real question is, will either of the candidates step forward to take advantage of the ‘Colbert Bump’? The Bucks County Courier Times knows that they should:

Satirist brings media attention to Philly
By BRIAN SCHEID
Bucks County Courier Times

Stephen Colbert believes that next week’s Pennsylvania Democratic presidential primary will be decided by Bucks voters.

“Bucks County is going to be the fulcrum on which this entire election will turn,” the political satirist said in an interview with the Courier Times.

However, Colbert seemed to have no idea about Bucks County’s political makeup or even where the county is located, but the pugnacious host of Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” has never let facts or research get in the way of a bold statement.

“I’m actually from Pennsylvania,” said Colbert, a South Carolina native, in a moment of “truthiness,” a word Colbert coined in 2005 to describe statements made without logic, evidence or facts.

“I can’t wait to go back home to Pennsylvania,” he said. “That’s the one near Delaware, right?”

. . .

While Clinton and Obama have grappled with issues of race, the war in Iraq and the sluggish economy, Colbert believes this primary will ultimately hinge on just one issue: whether Clinton or Obama appear on his show this week.

. . .

Support seems to come from a growing legion of fans Colbert lovingly refers to as “Colbert Nation.”

“It’s patriots and it-getters — people who get it,” Colbert said of the Nation. “We do very poorly in the “blame America first’ crowd.”
