Six Degrees: Kiss Me I’m Irish Edition.
Posted by: | Comments![]()
Ok, so I lied. I’m not actually Irish, I’m Australian but you can still kiss me and we drink just as much … if not more. I hope you’ve all recovered from good ol’ St. Patty’s Day and the festivities that ensured. Mine was a rather dismal day, I didn’t touch a drop of drink, there were no celebrations at Uni and I only wore green by accident. So if you’re like me and have had a boring day/week I hope the activities of Stephen’s friends and colleagues puts a smile on your dial.

Demonstrating that crafting is one of life’s more pleasurable and constructive leisure activities, Sedaris shows that anyone with a couple of hours to kill and access to pipe cleaners can join the elite society of crafters.

“The Second City Alumni: One Night Only” featuring Stephen Colbert – A Review
Posted by: | CommentsAgain our Zoners come through in helping us get the word out to Stephen Colbert fans who could not make it to an event. Thanks so much, Wildlymissingthemark, for the fantastic writeup!

Stephen Colbert (L), Steve Carell (C) and Scott Allman perform a skit as part of celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of improv theater, The Second City, in Chicago December 12, 2009.
Just wanted to give you my report from the Alumni show. I was so fortunate and blessed to be there, I flew in just for the weekend, and I was not disappointed.
I
Stephen actually participated in 3 scenes. He and Paul were the first alumni to appear onstage. They perform a scene from 1993. In the first scene, Stephen and Paul are brothers, and they are playing some kind of fantasy basketball game with that hilarious cheapy little hoop. They stalk around the stage, in slow motion, and doing that hissing cheering thing. They keep inserting Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen’s names and narrating some kind of playoff game. (It kind of sounded like the Dana Carvey show skit when Stephen is doing that endless narration about the basketball playoffs.) In pops their mother Amy, who comes over to see if they have thanked their father for giving them some money or something. She gives them some sidelong glances, makes her usual assortment of faces, and goes back in the house.
As they are playing, the subject comes up that Paul has lent his younger brother Stephen $2,000, and he supposed to be going to school or doing something for his career with it. Stephen is unemployed, and Paul becomes upset because Stephen informs him that he has purchased a ticket to go to Africa instead. Paul is telling him that his peak earning potential is at age 35, so he’d better get his act together before this golden opportunity passes him by. You could tell that they keep the actual script from 1993 in tact, because Stephen’s character says “In 6 years I am going to be 35,” and Paul says rather hilariously, “You really aren’t taking good care of yourself.” Stephen broke character just a touch at this, and it was adorable.
While they are arguing, Amy comes out again briefly, but it happens so fast it is hard for me to remember exactly what she said.
Paul becomes despondent when it becomes clear that the money is gone and Stephen may or may not have just spent it all on a trip to Africa to “find himself.” He sulks in the corner, and Stephen tries to get him to play the basketball game again. Gradually Stephen wins him over again, and they go back to “playing” their “game.”

The break week is a perfect time to see what’s up with the folks over at the Daily Show! The interview with Wyatt is pretty decent replacement for an evening of Daily Show viewing, or you might be able to plan an opportunity to see one of the correspondents live.
Wyatt Cenac (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)
- Wyatt was the guest on episode 23 of the podcast WTF with Marc Maron. It’s available for download from that site, and also on iTunes. His interview begins during the 17th minute and continues for almost a half hour. Wyatt is so excellent at telling stories, and he also has some great analyses of television. It’s a very long interview, but you won’t want it to end, because there are tons of insights and silly moments. It has my recommendation!
- There’s also an upcoming opportunity to see Wyatt performing live at Penn State, as a part of the College Humor Live tour. It’s December 5, 10:00 PM, at the Paul Robeson Cultural Center’s Heritage Hall. It’s also free of charge. You can read the student newspaper’s article for further information here. It seems like it could be aimed toward a very specific audience, and me telling you I’d go if I were able isn’t a great endorsement, and I’m a real life college student myself.
John Oliver (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)
- John will be appearing, as part of an excellent comedy line-up, in the show “Tell Your Friends! We’ll Kick Cancer’s Butt!” 8:00 PM, December 8, at Comix. There is a Facebook page for the event here and you can buy tickets at the Comix website. Another familiar Daily Show personality Kristen Schaal is also part of the show. It sounds like great fun, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is unfortunately ever a worthy cause.
John Hodgman (Contributor, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)
- The San Francisco website 7×7 has a very cool interview with John that coincided with his appearance there earlier this month. He discusses Twitter, meeting fans, and has some pretty amusing responses to other questions. (h/t wren)
Samantha Bee (Correspondent, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)
- Around the time Sam was appearing on the It’s Satire! panel in Connecticut, The Hartford Courant had an article about her Daily Show work. It includes plenty of quotes from Sam, many of which focus on her part in field pieces and interviews for The Daily Show.
Amy Sedaris (Bonus person, because she’s cool!)
- Amy will be guest-starring on the CBS show The New Adventures of Old Christine on December 9. She will play a woman who Christine treated poorly when they were in junior high. I’ve never watched Old Christine, but I’m so curious I might jump in for an episode to see Amy.

‘Fat Shame’ and a Fat Baby
Posted by: | CommentsDuring a badly needed break at work today, I decided to take a peek at which Colbert Report was shown on the rerun last night, and I saw that it was the one featuring Amy Farrell and the discussion Stephen and Amy had on weightism. I’m glad I did, because I forgot to post it at the time, but there was actually a follow up Q&A with Prof. Farrell in the Sentinel Online (h/t Jennie), and there’s some fun stuff in it:
5 Questions: Dickinson professor talks interview on ‘Colbert Report’
By Naomi Creason, Sentinel Reporter, October 16, 2009When Amy Farrell contributed to “The Fat Studies Reader,” she didn’t anticipate showing up on prime-time television to talk about national issues.
. . .
Question: What question were you not expecting?
Farrell: “I wasn’t expecting what he started off with — ‘Let’s get our cards down on the table. I’m fat, you’re fat.’ I wasn’t expecting it at all. I just started laughing. You just never know where he’s going to go.
“That day, I don’t think I’ve ever been more insulted in my life. But it was very fun to be there.”
. . .
I quite liked that Colbert Report interview for two reasons. First, I liked it because it acknowledged the weight problem that America is struggling with, but it also talked about a person’s overall health as being more than just a measure of weight.
The second reason I liked it was that it made me think of this Exit 57 sketch, in which a hilariously cruel Stephen proves that he can be quite the fierce defender of at least one “little butterball”:

Six Degrees: Jon Stewart (and ghosts of ‘The Daily Show’ past and present)
Posted by: | Comments
Hello, boys and girls, and welcome to another edition of “funny people out there giving us lots to blog about”!
Let’s start with the Jon Stewart bit, shall we? Most of us know Jon as the host of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, but you’d be wrong if you thought that meant he had any real power or clout. Don’t believe me? Watch the clip below featuring Daily Show execs Josh Lieb and Rory Albanese. It’s an advertisement for Josh’s new book (I Am a Genius of Unspeakable Evil and I Want to Be Your Class President), but it’s also quite a revelation, where Jon’s duties are concerned.
Sounds like a great book, Mr. Lieb!
There’s a lot more to cover, both about Jon and others, so click past the fold to see more.

Second City posts 1993 video of Colbert, Carell, Sedaris, Dinello, et al

Okay, this is kind of awesome. Second City has posted an excerpt of “Talkin’ ‘Bout The Balkans” featuring Fran Adams, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Paul Dinello, David Razowsky, Ruth Rudnick and Amy Sedaris on its website (“Celebrating 50 Years of Funny”)! The video quality isn’t great, the audio is muddy, and the camera is far away (and doesn’t follow the performers), but it’s still a lot of fun; you should definitely watch.
While you’re on the site, check out some of the other photos, videos and more from Second City’s history — there’s some great stuff in there.
