G’day Zoners, I hope you’ve all been enjoying the Winter Olympics. I for one have become obsessed with all things ice related – Speed Skating, Figure Skating, Curling and Ice Hockey. A great obsession to have smack bang in the middle of an Australian summer. I of course blame Stephen for my new found love of winter sports. For those of you able to tear yourselves away from all things ice and snow, Stephen’s friends have some exciting upcoming projects for you to check out.
Friends of the Show:
Neil DeGrasse Tyson
- The American Museum of Natural History has announced a year-long celebration commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Frederick Phineas and Sandra Priest Rose Center for Earth and Space.
As part of the celebrations Neil deGrasse Tyson will host and moderate the The Tenth AnnuAl Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate – “Moon, Mars and Beyond: Where next for the Manned Space Program?” on March 15.
Conan O’Brien
- Exciting news for all Coco fans, courtesy of The New York Times:
Representatives of Mr. O’Brien, the former host of “The Tonight Show” on NBC, confirmed Friday that plans are in the works to book what is being called “a revue” starring Mr. O’Brien in theaters in major cities from California to New York, and perhaps parts further east and west–and maybe north.
After exploring the degree of interest with some locations, Mr. O’Brien’s team has received “enormous interest from all over,” said one of his representatives, who asked not to be identified because the plans are not yet ready to announce. “We’ve heard from the U.K., Scandinavia, Australia, Toronto, everywhere; it’s been incredible.”

When I grow up, I want to be Allison Silverman
Posted by: | CommentsThanks to Katt, who found the video of Allison Silverman accepting her MUSE award last week. Allison is such a beautiful, amazing woman, and she is hysterical to boot. Her words about being human being a strength and not a liability ring so very true, and something we all need to hear now and again. So please enjoy the video.

Allison Silverman accepts her Muse Award from Stephen Colbert
Posted by: | CommentsVery cool! The Wall Street Journal devotes a few words to yesterday’s Muse Awards ceremony honoring women in film and television:
Stephen Colbert Crashes 29th Annual Muse Awards Honoring America Ferrera, Julianna Margulies
By Michelle KungThis afternoon’s 29th Annual Muse Awards — honoring actresses America Ferrera and Julianna Margulies, late night comedy writer/producer Allison Silverman and Lifetime President and CEO Andrea Wong — may have been all about celebrating New York women in film and television, but there was one man the roughly 900 attendees were pleasantly surprised to see: Stephen Colbert.
The host of “The Colbert Report” showed up to present a Muse Award to his friend Silverman, who was the Executive Producer of his show before leaving 73 days ago — “but who’s counting?’ he joked. In a touching tribute, he commended her for her ability to keep her humanity when the male-dominated comedy writing world is all about one-upping each other. And as evidence of their symbiotic comedic minds, both told the exact same joke, pointing out that Silverman was qualified for the New York Women in Film & Television award because she was a woman and she lived in New York.
. . .
Congratulations, Allison! It’s so sweet that Stephen was there to honor her. There are a few more photos from the event here; the one with the two of them hugging is simply heartwarming.
UPDATED TO ADD: MediaPost’s Kelly Samardak has some great details in her post about the event. I particularly loved this sentence: “When Silverman stepped up to the microphone, she was visibly moved by the Colbert Surprise, and immediately launched into an almost-perfect duplication of the jokes Colbert had just delivered, which proved their claims of comedic mind reading and a constant competition on who can be the most outrageous… which she followed with ‘Boobies, penis, vagina, diarrhea.’”

Six Degrees: Glenn Eichler and Allison Silverman

Hi gang! I hope everyone had a good weekend and is ready to face Monday. (What, already?) This is just a quick drive-by post to fill you in on some news about a couple of our favorite Colbert Report people.
Glenn Eichler
- Hollywood University blog has a great interview with TCR writer Glenn Eichler, who talks about becoming a TV writer. Here he discusses his transition from writing for an animated show to writing for the Report.
Interview with The Colbert Report’s Glenn Eichler – Hollywood University blog
Your credits include animated series as well as The Colbert Report. How did you make the jump from one genre to another, and what advice do you have for other writers wanting to do the same (i.e. miving from comedy to drama)?
I made the jump because the animated show I wrote for five years (Daria) had a sort of cultish cachet, so I got to meet some up-and-coming comedy writers while doing it. By the time the show wrapped, several of them had become established in the industry, including Ben Karlin, who became e.p. of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. He recommended me for the latter when it was staffing up. So my story may be a little atypical. But my advice for writers is always the same: never stop writing, even when you’re not being paid to, and try to learn as many genres as you can. Even so, you may get pigeonholed in one area — I was “the guy who can write in a teenage girl’s voice,” until I became “the political satire guy.”
Allison Silverman
- Somewhat related to the topic of the interview with Glenn Eichler is this New York Times article about women writers — or more precisely, the lack of them — in late night television. Among the women writers and producers who were quoted in the article was former TCR head writer and executive producer Allison Silverman.
Among late-night writers, few women in the room – New York Times
“When you’re writing for late night, you’re writing through one person’s prism, and that person at the shows you’re looking at is always a dude,” said Hallie Haglund, one of the new writers on “The Daily Show.” Allison Silverman, who has served as the only woman writer first on “The Daily Show” then on Conan O’Brien’s staff, said she has no trouble assuming the voices of male hosts. Bu tshe added, “I don’t think the issue of sensibility is off base. The hosts and the staffs I worked on often resembled one another. Have you seen how many tall Irish people are on Conan’s staff?”
. . .Writer’s rooms have always had a reputation for crude behavior. Ms. Silverman described both “The Daily Show” and Mr. O’Brien’s show as “really good experiences” — though rife with crudeness. “There were plenty of penis jokes,” she said. “On occasion I’ve told them myself, though my penis jokes were rarely good. I don’t quite have the feel.”
- In other Allison Silverman news, Variety reports that she’s just won a Muse Award from New York Women in Film and Television: New York Women in Film and Television has announced the winners of this year’s Muse Awards. “The Good Wife’s” Julianna Margulies, “Ugly Betty’s” America Ferrera, The Colbert Report” writer-producer Allison Silverman and Lifetime Networks CEO Andrea Wong will be presented their awards at the Muse Awards gala Dec. 9 at the New York Hilton.

Six Degrees: Allison Silverman, Meg DeFrancesco, Aasif Mandvi

Greetings, Zoners! While I was compiling this week’s zeitgeist post, I came across quite a bit of news about some of our friends in the Colbert universe, so it seemed like a good idea to separate them out into their own post. I love it when there’s this much good news about the folks who make us laugh.
Allison Silverman
- This didn’t take long! From Variety comes word that Allison Silverman has reached a deal to write a pilot for Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video. There are currently no details on the project beyond the fact that it’s a blind script deal. I’ll be keeping an eye out for more news about the project, because this is exciting! I’m so pleased for Allison.
Meg DeFrancesco
- …a.k.a., Meg the Intern, appeared on The Jay Leno Show recently as a customer being entertained by The Dan Band at a car wash. It’s a funny clip with some hilarious hose choreography (yes, dancing with hoses). You can see the clip by clicking on the link to the show above.
Aasif Mandvi
Two articles related to Aasif’s recent appearance at USC for an event billed as “Life on ‘The Daily Show.’”
- Aasif Mandvi: He’s Out to Ruin Your Life – Neon Tommy (Annenberg School of Journalism, USC)
Mandvi took us through a day in the life of a “Daily Show” correspondent. “I wake up and see if Osama has released another tape. If he has, I get to work. If he hasn’t, I go get a massage,” Mandvi explained.
Mandvi says he learned his tricks of the trade from the master, Stephen Colbert… Colbert’s advice? “Use the silence,” Mandvi repeated to us. When Mandvi asks a question, at first interviewees will give a typical, well-prepared answer; but if he remains silent once they’ve finished their spiel, they’ll feel the need to continue talking, until “eventually they say what they wish they hadn’t.”
- ‘Daily Show’ actor entertains audience with truth – USC Daily Trojan
“A field piece requires a whole different skill set,” Mandvi explained. “It basically requires us going out into the world and leaving our souls behind… taking innocent people with kids, wives, husbands, friends and family, and completely just [screwing] up their lives. We do this very well.”
Mandvi even passed along a bit of advice from former correspondent Stephen Colbert. “Look for the ‘[screw] the chicken moment,’” he said, defining the moment in an interview when the guests will say something that embarrasses them and exposes the absurdity of their argument.

A quick note from Allison Silverman to the Zoners
Posted by: | CommentsJust wanted to share this quick note I received in my e-mail this morning:
Hello DB & all No Facters,
Thank you so much for all your kind thoughts and comments on my departure. Part
of what made working at The Colbert Report so wonderful was knowing we had such
goodhearted, insightful fans. For the foreseeable future, I will be recharging,
writing on my own, missing the incomparable Stephen Colbert, and checking the
latest on NoFactZone! Thank you again. You all make me very happy.

Gainesville native praised upon leaving ‘The Colbert Report’
By Bill Dean
Sun entertainment editor
Published: Friday, September 18, 2009 at 10:29 a.m.
Last Modified: Friday, September 18, 2009 at 10:29 a.m.Gainesville native Allison Silverman received a very Stephen Colbert-ish and appreciative sendoff from the host of “The Colbert Report” on Thursday – Silverman’s last day on the show as executive producer – with Colbert praising her work for the past four years.
“I’m both very said and very furious that she’s leaving, and, frankly, I don’t want to have a meltdown on camera,” Colbert said in the “Word” segment that ended Thursday’s show on Comedy Central. “So to feel better about it, I am choosing to have ‘false memories’ that will make me glad she’s leaving.”
After “remembering” such false memories as Allison using the phrase “Whazzup!” Colbert explained the segment’s conceit: “Because the only other option is that she’s a great writer, a brilliant producer and a dear friend, and I don’t know the word for that.”
. . .
Let’s watch that sweet send-off once more, shall we?
