It’s September 19th (where I am, anyway) and, as such, I feel it my duty to wish you all a happy Talk Like a Pirate Day. Or perhaps that should read, “Ayyye feel it my duty …” Anyway, celebrate, me hearties!

This Week in God! Even Stephvens! Desk Interviews! Field Reports! All of the Daily Show reminiscing that you want in a convenient weekly post!

Good day Zoners, and thank God that the break is finally over! I missed our man, and was happy to see that he (and his hair) was back in full form. The “Corporations as People” theme from Tuesday’s show inspired today’s pick for Klassic Kolbert. As Stephen made the point that corporations are actually people, I couldn’t help but remember this segment featuring an oil corporation who would only speak to Stephen in the guise of an adorable little girl. Enjoy!

Tanks A Lot – Though oil prices have reached record highs, one unscrupulous gas station owner is lowering his prices.

Nice! Props to DB for pointing out that Rolling Stone, in addition to releasing a Q&A teaser and cover shot, also did a walkthrough of Stephen’s pre-Report days.

Martin Schoeller 'Rolling Stone' photo - Stephen Colbert

Before Stephen Colbert was a beloved political satirist and Peabody-winning grizzly bear detractor, he was an actor and comedian shuffling his way through various sketch shows and under-the-radar cameos. His stoic deadpan and occasional bouts of bluster were already present in the roles he would take on before The Colbert Report premiered in 2005, revealing an actor with Hartman-esque range aching for a breakout role. Rolling Stone takes a look back at the pre-fame Colbert with some classic clips waiting to be dredged up for his next Green Screen Challenge.

Nice job, Rolling Stone. You missed a few clips (that one from Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn is hard to get hold of, and I suppose Bewitched should have been included if The Great New Wonderful was), but this is pretty comprehensive. I kind of wish they’d linked Stephen’s “real newsman” Good Morning America report, though — it’s so funny watching him trying to be serious.

The interview on Monday night with the woman who invented the phrase “Death Panels”, Betsy McCaughey, was an excellent example of why Jon Stewart is considered one of the leading newsmen of his generation. The Atlantic featured two different discussions about the subject in the past few days. First, author James Fallows discusses some of the conclusions that can be reached by watching the interview. He mentions that the interview cemented in his mind that McCaughey is in fact a taco short of a combination plate, that McCaughey proved that an actual “effective” way to deal with Stewart’s arguments is with your own nudge and wink to the audience (and to totally ignore all facts presented by Stewart in the process), and finally, that McCaughey shows the inconsistencies in focusing on perceived issues like “death panels” without looking at the entire bill.

His article produced some interesting discourse on what others took out of the interview. Here’s one of my favorite of the selections that Fallows chose to highlight in a follow up column online:

Objection 1: The Audience Is In on the Joke

…I disagree that talking over Jon Stewart the way people do in appearances on Fox News is an effective tactic for the guest. It might be better than some of the other options, but it backfires for a weird reason, one that might be harder to see if you don’t watch the show regularly.

From its inception in 1997, the distinguishing shtick that makes the show unique is a type of edited interview segment in which the show’s “reporters” interview obscure and completely crazy people. The subjects have received some local press attention for doing something bizarre and they’re desperate for media attention. The reporters pretend to be mainstream press rather than comedians, and they use a deadpan style that allows the interviewees to provide most of the humor. What struck me about the McCaughey interview, and the recent interview of Orly Taitz by Stephen Colbert, was that Stewart and Colbert are clearly adapting the “crazy person” interview techniques to their live in-studio host interviews with guests that don’t agree with them.

The normal host interviews vary a lot but they are always a two-way conversation with some socially well-adjusted give and take. In these two recent interviews, as the guest acts more unstoppable and enthusiastic unhinged when discussing “their” topic, the interview slides into the familiar “crazy person” style. That’s a cue for the show’s regular audience to frame the discussion and the interviewee in a very different way.

Brian Williams and Jon Stewart -- Play Ball! -- Photo from TVNewser
Hahahahaha! Once again, friendly rivals Jon Stewart and Brian Williams meet, resulting in a win for Team Stewart. From TVNewser (which might want to distinguish between “Routes” and “Routs” in the future):

Daily Show Routes Brian Williams, Nightly News
Tuesday, Aug 11

. . .

Last evening, Jon Stewart and his Daily Show colleagues met NBC’s Brian Williams and the “Most Trusted Team” under the lights of west-side Manhattan for what was built up as one of the great softball games in the pantheon of amateur sports. The game started out promising enough for NBC, whose uniforms and focused warm-up startled the Daily Show squad, which responded with chants of “Ba-sic! Ca-ble!” through part of the first inning.

. . .

Check out the full account (with photos) here
Click here for Brian Williams’ post-game presser

A 12-2 victory for The Daily Show — well done!

Although I wish the photos were clearer, it’s hard not to be grateful for any account of fun stuff like this. (I can just hear Jon’s shout of “Did you guys bring water? Who’s going to hold my inhaler?”) What a cool game this must have been!

This Week in God! Even Stephvens! Desk Interviews! Field Reports! All of the Daily Show reminiscing that you want in a convenient weekly post!

klassickolberticonGood day Zoners! Well, with the news focusing on the release of Laura Ling and Euna Lee from North Korea, I thought I would feature a North Korean clip from Stephen’s Daily Show tenure. Now, for whatever reason, The Daily Show’s website doesn’t recognize the keywords “stephen colbert” and “north korea” put together, but I still managed to find this clip that I found interesting for a couple of reasons: 1) Mo Rocca apparently managed to sneak into North Korea and 2) Stephen was trying to get the media to refocus on Iraq, something he did in a more publicized way with his recent Iraq tour.

Enjoy!

Klassic Kolbert: Cat Person

Posted by: Ms Interpreted | Comments (8)

I don’t know about you all, but I sometimes find the barrage of coverage about health care, the economy, the Gates arrest, and who has the best copy of a birth certificate EVER a bit, well, soul-crushing. I’m all for being informed, but mental health breaks are pretty good, too.

So if you’re finding the world to be just a little too much and you need a little pick-me-up, let me recommend this modest dose of Stephen Colbert, Cat Person.

Even though I quite love dogs (the story that prompted the lead-in to this piece is, frankly, terrible), I found that cat-loving Stephen was pretty nauseatingly cute.

Good day all! Well, Comedy Central got to the Apollo/space clips before I did, so for a while I was at a real loss as to what to feature in this week’s Klassic Kolbert. But then last night, Stephen informed us that the Pope broke his wrist and like that, I had a topic again! So without further ado, here’s This Week in God!

This Week in God – The Pope – John Paul II recovers from the flu, Triaminic is certified as kosher and the Spanish Catholic Church declares condoms immoral.
