The meeting of liberal comedian Jon Stewart from ‘The Daily Show with Jon Stewart’ and right-wing pundit Bill O’Reilly on ‘The O’Reilly Factor’ was anticipated enough by Stewart fans that many braved the Fox News network to get a glimpse of this modern-day Clash of the Titans. However, we like our readers too much to subject them to such torture, so we tracked down the full length video, provided courtesy of Fox News. [blech]
The interview has generated a ton of post mortem discussion about the politics of the situation both in the mainstream media and the blogosphere, and who “won” the interview. Then again, apparently Jon is quite aware of such discussion. However, I have concluded, as Henry Kissinger might say, America won this round.
Here’s a collection of articles that you might want to check out that have discussed the interview:
- Stewart on O’Reilly, Unedited: Worth the 42 Minutes – Time Magazine
- Jon Stewart and Bill O’Reilly: More compatible than you think? – Christian Science Monitor
- In Visit to Fox News, Jon Stewart Faults Fox News – New York Times
- Jon Stewart vs. Bill O’Reilly: Did O’Reilly win the bout on points? – LA Times
And for your viewing pleasure, please watch the interview in its entirety, and feel free to comment on your opinion of how Jon did in the comments.

Stephen Colbert to appear in “The Pluto Files” on PBS
By · CommentsHere’s something that looks like fun for all of us space geeks! On March 2nd, PBS is scheduled to air The Pluto Files, hosted by rockstar astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and based on his book of the same name. From the program description on the show’s web site:
The Pluto Files
Premiere broadcast on PBS: March 2, 2010
. . .From Boston to California, Tyson’s spirited journey explores the history of Pluto — from the time of its discovery to its fall from planethood. Along the way, Tyson meets a fascinating cast of characters, from scientists who argue over Pluto’s status to die-hard “Plutophiles” — regardless of where they stand they have one thing in common: strong opinions about Pluto. “The Pluto Files” also includes special appearances by Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, Diane Sawyer, and Brian Williams, who share their affection for the former planet. “I’m sorry, I thought planets might be one of the constants in life,” Colbert jests. “But scientists just love change more than anything else. I’m sorry that’s not change I can believe in.”
. . .
There’s a preview of the program posted on PBS’ web site which I can’t embed here, but you can catch a glimpse of Dr. Tyson being interviewed on both The Daily Show and the Report. There’s also a promo video up on YouTube, in which Jon Stewart calls Dr. Tyson a “galactic despot” and Brian Williams gets in a little dig at Stewart and Colbert. This is going to be so entertaining!

Daily Show Toss Recap – Klassic
By · CommentsBefore we go, let’s check in with our good friend Stephen Colbert of The Colbert Report…
Greetings, fellow Zoners and Toss Fans! No new Toss this week, but that affords us an opportunity to dig into the wonderful treasure trove of archives over at The Daily Show’s website. Here’s a popular fave:
July 13, 2006: Daily/Colbert – Pirate Suit: Though Stephen Colbert wears a pirate suit for his children, his marriage is still in trouble.
Arrrr, I’m a sucker for watching the boys crack each other up! Stephen’s absolutely adorkable in his pirate costume, too. This one is a big fan favorite, and for good reason, I think! Your thoughts, Zoners?

EPISODE NUMBER: 6020 (February 4, 2010)
GUESTS: Henry Louis Gates
SEGMENTS: Tip of the Hat/Wag of the Finger, Formidable Opponent
VIDEOS: Thursday, February 4, 2010
Being the Woopra site stat addict that I am, I shudder to wonder what bizarre search hits I’m going to get for listing Stephen Colbert’s Pussy Patrol in this episode guide tonight. I really enjoyed today’s Tip of the Hat/Wag of the Finger. UrbanDictionary.com’s definition of “Canada’s History” is not for the faint of heart. It’s quickly turning into the Colbert Nation’s version of “The Aristocrat”. Which is also not for the faint of heart, but worth it to see Bob Saget’s rendition of the joke.
Next to Cheating Death, Formidable Opponent is my favorite recurring segment on the ‘Colbert Report’. I love seeing the logic loops and turns that Blue Stephen inflicts onto Red Stephen. I also adored Stephen’s Gregory Peck impression, and his red suspenders. I also really like that they rarely wrap up the solution in a tight little bow. It’s a very thought provoking segment every time, and I usually watch it multiple times just to absorb it all and to think about the questions asked.
I know I’ve mentioned it a dozen times, but I am seriously looking forward to the ‘Faces of America’ show on PBS. And Henry Louis Gates is a bit of a spitfire. It cracked me up every time that Stephen called him “Skip”. It’s always such a treat to see a guest come on that has such an obvious background with Stephen, and to see that person fight back in a way that makes it hard for “Stephen” to respond.
What did you all enjoy about tonight’s episode?

- You know I’ve made no secret of this, folks, I have always been against gays in the military. If they are allowed in, how will I know what Uncle Sam really means by “I Want You”. It would be the first time a guy with a goatee and a top hat tried that on me.
- In fact, if two hermaphrodites do it, that’s double-straight as long as they’re putting Tab A into Slot B. If not, it’s double-gay.
- Okay, it worked in 30-35 seconds. which means you could unravel Al Quaida’s master plan quicker than you could microwave a frozen burrito.
- You know, it was just office water cooler talk after the water cooler had been poured over Zubaydah’s face.
- Oh, come on ‘The Beaver’! You changed the name just because your search engine thinks it’s porn? You don’t see me renaming the site for my van service that picks up stray cats, Pussy Patrol. It’s PussyPatrol.org by the way, it’s very important, it’s non-profit.
- Apparently Canadians don’t know that in America, the term “Canada’s History” is a euphamism for a sex act so depraved I can’t describe it on TV. Let’s just say it involves moose antlers, a jug of maple syrup, and the Stanley Cup.
- Putting everything in there, by the way, is the hardest part of performing “Canada’s History”.
- Stephen: That’s why we should hold a tribunal in the basement of Gitmo right next to the “Aquatic Center”.
Stephen: You mean the waterboarding room?
Stephen: [nods head 'Yes'] No. - Stephen: Oh, so you think he could be found innocent?
Stephen: No! We’re going to fry him like a battered shrimp! - Atticus Finch! Stephen’s doing his Gregory Peck!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAA!!
- Henry Louis Gates: I have done African American Lives, African American Lives II, Oprah’s Roots, and Faces of America, and you, Stephen, are the whitest man I have ever tested.
- So I have a cousin who’s a sistah.
- So I’m royalty and I’m good at accents.

EPISODE NUMBER: 6019 (February 3, 2010)
GUESTS: Peter Cove, John Durant
SEGMENTS: Stephen Colbert’s Job Man Caravan
VIDEOS: Wednesday, February 3, 2010
I have to be honest with everyone. I’m seriously looking forward to the Olympics. I’m not looking forward to them only because I’m looking forward to the silliness that will ensue, but quite honestly I’m looking forward to the break from all the news about unemployment and the horrible economy and all of the serious subjects that Stephen has been taking on with aplomb. I mean, seriously, who takes an interview about unemployment and job losses and turns it into a 70’s hip cat television show, complete with theme song?!
And after Stephen woefully neglected the fabulous beard of Henry Allen last night, it was massive that Stephen mentioned Peter Cove’s glorious lip warmer right off the bat. Very interesting audience interaction tonight – those looked like actual audience members asking actual questions.
Stephen seemed to be having a lot of fun interviewing John Durant. It’s always fun to see the guest’s answers amuse Stephen as much as they amuse us.
What did all of you enjoy about the show tonight?

- Next thing you know, they’ll be giving out Purple Hearts for being fabulous under fire.
- Before you know it, they’ll be freebasing spinach.
- And if you add people who have jobs, but spend most of the day on Facebook, it’s up to the mid-90’s.
- That’s right, we’re in a man-cession. That is why I’m recommending that men start a full course of estrogen hormones. So even if you don’t get the job, you can breastfeed your self. Which reminds me, breastfeed Grammy. Also, a true story.
- How many people have you employed just to groom your mustache?
- You place ex-offenders in customer service? Is that why I can’t get my cable hooked up? I’m looking for a Grammy polisher, by the way.
- Should he make specific lies for every job that he wants to get?
- So you’ve used the computer? That’s great!
- And you should probably start nagging your friends to stop firing you.
- It’s not how fast you type, it’s how fast you hype – pepperpot!
- I understand you exercise by throwing stones around. You live in a New York apartment. I’m sure your neighbors are thrilled by this.
- Looking for single lactose intolerant to join me in cave.

‘Icehole Lager’ beer to debut in Canada
By · Comments
If you’re going to be in the Vancouver area this next month or so, you might have the opportunity to check out a very unique brew.
In response to Stephen Colbert calling Canadians a bunch of syrup suckers and iceholes for not letting the U.S. Olympic Speedskating team practice on the ice oval, Vancouver’s R&B microbrewery has created a very special lager. Barry Benson, co-owner of R&B Brewing Co. says “We are proud syrup-sucking Canadian iceholes. In celebration of our icehole-ish behaviour we have decided to get even rather than get mad. Canadians can wreak their revenge against Stephen Colbert in a truly Canadian way and have a beer.”
You can check out the beer at these release parties:
- Friday, February 5th
Pumphouse Pub
5:00-9:00pm
6031 Blundell Road, Richmond
and
Capones Restaurant and Live Jazz Club
5:00pm
1141 Hamilton Street, Vancouver
You also might want to check out the Refuel Restaurant and Bar (1944 West 4th Avenue (at Cypress), Vancouver) for the “Be an Icehole Burger & Beer” special.
