Weekend Brunch – Insomniac Edition
By
Welcome to our (mostly) weekly discussion group to talk about Stephen, our lives, our friendships with each other, and pretty much anything you’d like to talk about with other readers of No Fact Zone, what we here affectionately call “the Zoners”.
This brunch is actually being written at 1:32a, because it’s been a stressful day and my sleep patterns have gotten all out of whack. I did, however, eat a bowl of Golden Grahams for dinner, so I’m totally counting it.
Holy cow, Zoners! Has this been an amazing week or what?! And this week, I’m giving a MASSIVE shout-out to all of the No Fact Zone field reporters who have been bringing the scoop of all of the events going on this week. It’s been really amazing to hear the stories of the Two Rivers benefit, and the Stand Up for Heroes event, and the Paley Center event with the ‘Colbert Report’ writers. It’s the passion of the Zoners that has helped you come out of those events with some amazing stories to share.
And on top of some amazing events, we as a community have gotten tremendous validation from both Stephen and the writers this week. At the Two Rivers event, when No Fact Zone was mentioned, Stephen himself said that we are “a great site”. And according to long-time Zoner Spoon at a Spork Fight, we were mentioned at the Paley Center writers event as well in a very positive light.
I constantly say that I love this community that we have built here, but it’s weeks like these where the fruit of these efforts tastes deliciously sweet. I couldn’t do this without all of you who are lucky enough to live close to where these events are happening, and who come back with such wonderful stories to tell. So yeah, we rock. GROUP HUG! Has everyone busted out their ukuleles for Kum Ba Ya yet?
Here’s my action item for the week for all of you:
Introduce yourselves!
I’ve seen a ton of new names in the comments this week, and I’d love get to know you all a little bit better. So please, write a little paragraph in the comments to introduce yourselves. And you Zoners who have been around since before we even had the Zoner name, introduce yourselves as well – don’t be shy! And feel free to comment on each other’s intro.
Here’s a list of possible things to mention:
- Age
- Location
- Occupation
- How did you get into being a fan of Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?
- Have you been to a taping?
- What’s your favorite sketch/song from Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?
- What is your favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment (from the ‘Daily Show’, Wigfield, ‘Strangers With Candy’, etc.)?
I look forward to learning more about all of you! And don’t forget, you can use this thread to talk about any type of off-topic subject you’d like to discuss with your fellow Zoners. So get commenting already!

Male, 26, Bioengineering PhD student, been watching colbert from the beginning (and TDS from the start of Jon’s run), never been to a taping (even though Colbert came to UPenn for a week, the tickets sold out so fast I had no shot), really enjoy the Tony Bennett/Colbert duet “Who’s Got the Last Laugh Now?” and the Word segment “Pound of Flesh” dealing with organ commodification (I even used that clip when I taught a lecture on bioethics).
Only a lurker until now, came across no fact zone sometime this year.

This reply is being written at 3:14 am, because I stay up all night eating watermelon. I don’t believe I’ve ever done one of these BUT I FEEL ADVENTUROUS LATE AT NIGHT I GUESS. So, yeah, hi, I’m Mori.
* Age: t-twenty already ‘orz
* Location: originally from Akron, OH, currently in Beverly, MA for ~college~
* Occupation: Student at Montserrat College of Art! with a concentration in illustration.
* How did you get into being a fan of Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: I honestly can’t remember too well- as a college-aged person in America I had of course /heard/ about the glories of Stephen Colbert, but I don’t really remember actively watching it until round february or march of this year? I used to wake up in the mornings and watch the previous night’s episode up on Hulu, and then during the summer i think? i started staying up till 11 to watch it at the time of broadcast. I found the lj communities shortly thereafter, and then NFZ, and then ENDLESS PARTY
* Have you been to a taping?: No. CRY FOREVER!! I really, really want to go, but I don’t even have a car or friends over in NYC or, like… time where I could miss class to go. :I Hopefully this summer?
* What’s your favorite sketch/song from Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: “Charlene” is a thing of beauty, seriously. I still need to get an mp3 of it so i can have it as my ringtone. That, and any time Stephen pretends to hallucinate to some degree, be it Glenn Beck impersonations, “drug” “withdrawals”, or tripping on LSD. “That fire looks fake… that fire is fake!!”
* What is your favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment (from the ‘Daily Show’, Wigfield, ‘Strangers With Candy’, etc.)?: I have like 500, but uh… every Even Stephven, especially the Halloween one (“I wanna be a vampire!!”), the one from the olympics where he wants to be an ice skater (“It’s like you’re /flying/! Do you believe in life after love after love after love~”), the Prince Charles banana one; I haven’t read Wigfield yet (GASP SCANDALOUS) but I loved all of SWC, especially in the cult episode where he tries to be a spy to one of the members. “OH GOD YES.”
wow okay that was way too long but that’s just how it rolls bro. i also like yugioh, which might be the furthest removed thing from Stephen Colbert out there. does anyone here like yugioh?

I’m a long-time Zoner? *happy dance*
Ahem. Anyways:
*Age: mid 20s
*Location: NYC
*Occupation: secretary
*Fan origin story: Via the Daily Show. But I do remember catching a few episodes of SWC back before I knew what it was (or that Noblet was also the “This Week in God” guy) and liking it, though I didn’t see all of it until the DVD came out much later. In particular, the scene with a clown yelling “MY DADDY WILL NEVER DIE! YOU HEAR ME GOD?!?” stuck with me. I just remember as a teenager sitting in my chair thinking, “Huh. That was weird. But also a little bit crazy awesome.”
*Taping: Yes! 10/8/09, with the exquisite Beck monologue, which I’ve already geeked out over in the comments (and to anyone who’d listen). I missed the Mountain Goats by two days! But loved streaming (and now owning) their new album.
*What’s your favorite sketch/song: Again, I have also already geeked out here over my deep and abiding love for “There Are Much Worse Things to Believe In” from the Christmas special. From the Iraq shows, the DADT Formidable Opponent made me cry (yes, I admit it). From the regular Report, many of The Words that focused on torture (especially the one about explaining it to children) and Stephen’s parody of the NOM anti-gay marriage ad (“Oh no! The homo storm got me!”).
*Favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment: I love the ending of the Cult two-parter. (Hi Mori! Stephen as a failed cult spy is GREAT!) Like the Christmas episode, it’s both strangely sincere (when Becky, climbing out the window, tells Jerri that “God loves [her]” and Jerri agrees) and sincerely strange (Jerri hugging herself alone, in the basement and saying “Hugs!”). And of course, the King of Glory dance. ‘Nuff said.
And from the Daily Show, the Prince Charles bit and all the Even Stevphens go without saying. I’m still listening to the Wigfield audiobook, but I’m already a huge fan of Raven (and Stephen’s story of his brother wanting to meet her).

“There Are Much Worse Things to Believe In” is my favorite song from the Christmas special. Thinking about it now actually just gave me goosebumps…
And I’m still laughing about the “the homo storm got me” comment! :)
Glad to hear you’re listening to the Wigfield audiobook! How are you liking it so far? :D

I love Wigfield so far. Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello are such great voice actors. I get an extra kick from all the jokes about writing and reaching the 50,000 word limit too, since it reminds me of when I worked in book publishing (not editorial though, obviously).
I have to watch the “homo storm” ad to wind down after stuff like the recent Maine vote. My state (NY) is actually voting on gay marriage this Tuesday. I’m trying not to get my hopes up, but it IS 2009…
I love that TAMWTBI gives you goosebumps! Elvis Costello is so in character during the song too.

Wonderful, I’m glad you’re liking it! I read Wigfield over the summer and bought the audiobook immediately after reading it because it quickly became one of my favorite books. I love how closely related Mae Ella Padgett is to Jerri Blank lol. Stephen as Dillard is great too – even though the picture in the book is of Paul. And to hear Stephen do Mayor Halstead is just hilarious.
I wish Michigan cared enough about gay marriage to even put it on the ballot. It’s weird too, because Michigan has a very large LGBT population, especially in the bigger cities. I know it would never pass if it was on our state ballot, but I’d still vote yes on it in a heartbeat.
I’m going to watch Colbert Christmas tonight now just after talking about that song lol. I just really love TAMWTBI’s lyrics, and Stephen is SUCH a wonderful singer – I could listen to his voice all day :)

“Down in the Basement” is HI-larious! I think “Troy and Laughton” is my absolute favorite though. That one, and the skits where Stephen and Amy play Paul’s strict religious parents.
Thank God for youtube – I wouldn’t be able to see Exit 57 without it :)

Hey all, occasional commenter long time fan :)
*Age: 19
*Location: Brisbane, Australia
*Occupation: Student (Politics and International Studies)
*How did you get into being a fan of Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’? I was hooked on Stephen from the very first episode shown on The Comedy Channel in 07′ and before then I was an avid Daily Show fan. Moving to the city for University was GREAT as pretty much everybody knew of Stephen and Jon as opposed to my hometown where NOBODY did – One of my Tutorials at uni is even taught with Daily Show Clips!
*Have you been to a taping?
Yes! The 15th of July this year! I finally jumped on a 21 hr flight to NYC and saw both Stephen and Jon & also went to visit Stephen’s portrait in the Smithsonian and generally ate WAY too much Americone Dream.
*What’s your favorite sketch/song from Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’? Songs – Much worse things to believe in, Stephen Stephen by Apples in Stereo and WHENEVER Stephen sings. The week from Iraq and presidential run shows were amazing & I majorly heart Threatdowns.
*What is your favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment (from the ‘Daily Show’, Wigfield, ‘Strangers With Candy’, etc.)? Even Stevphens, Stephen at the DNC, Getty Oil piece (so cute!) and any Jon/Stephen desk interaction. I finally got my hands on Wigfield in L.A. and it’s AMAZING, lurrrrving Strangers, Exit 57 and Phil Ken Sebben, who always has me Rolling!!

That’s awesome that you’ve been able to make it to a taping! I live in the states and still haven’t managed to get myself up to NYC =p
Have to agree with you on the Much worse things to believe in song…it was beautifully done–that and the girl is mine duet with john legend are my fav songs of colbert with Charlene and singin’ in Korean tied for third.
Since you’re in Aussie, what’s up with Rove? They don’t do the 20 in 20 anymore?

Going to a Stephen Taping was a definitely a loooong time in the making, saving enough money then convincing my whole family to sit up till 2.30am for two weeks until we nabbed some tickets on the right date. But it was pretty much the best day of my life so definitely worth it!
I love Rove! He just finished actually. They’ve replaced 20 bucks in 20 seconds with ‘Public Probe’ which is pretty rubbish he needs to bring back old stuff like ‘What The?’ and ‘Flick ya Switch’.
Do you get him over there? I’ve only seen him on Leno, apparently they have a pretty impressive bromance going on. Although, he was bragging on his twitter the other day that he was hanging at The Daily Show. Jealous!

Nah, we don’t get him over here–but I used to be able to watch him on their website–now its blocked in the US..but they still post clips on youtube that I can watch.
I first saw him with Steve Carell and Hathaway and found him hilarious, so I started watching more and found him great.
The public probe is corny and I don’t enjoy it much.
He was at TDS? Crazy! Wonder who he was visiting, perhaps John Oliver?

Ohh yeah we had too! And pretty much everything reminded me of Stephen! From a bag of Dole salad (which we ate with the bag off) to The Liberty Bell ‘Stephen tongued that’! My friend in the end referred to it as the ‘Stephen expedition’ after about the second day of listening to my endless analogies.

Hi, everyone! I’m Stephanie (or Stevie, whichever). Here’s my intro ^_^
* Age: 24
* Location: Florida
* Occupation: Teacher for the Girl Scouts/Boys and Girls Club and (future) history grad student.
* How did you get into being a fan of Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: It’s really funny (to me, anyway), since I watched TDS before Jon hosted it, though being in eighth grade I had no appreciation for what was going on. But I couldn’t stand the correspondents – Stephen included. It wasn’t until I got to college that I started getting TDS. I remember hearing about Stephen’s speech at the White House, but I didn’t give it a second thought. It took another year or so before I got REALLY into TCR, where I am now. I read about Stephen’s background and his charity work and, well, the rest is history. I greatly admire the work he does and how smart he is.
* Have you been to a taping?: YES! 3/30/09! I got to see a toss, got to shake Stephen’s hand, ask him a question, got a picture with him, and got a WristStrong bracelet from his wrist! (He wore it for a second before rethinking it, taking it off, and shooting it at me. It hit me in the side and he laughed embarrassingly. So awesome!) I saw TDS the next day, also great. I’m totally trying to see another show this spring break!
* What’s your favorite sketch/song from Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: I love the “Fallback Position” sketch and when he visits museums (“If water is so special, why do we let fish poop in it?”). Anytime Stephen breaks character is awesome. I loved when he interviewed Steve Carell at The Apple Store when they both sang the national anthem. I adore seeing them together! Finally, I really get a kick out of watching Stephen play a serious character, like on “Law and Order” or “The Great New Wonderful”. We always see him as a comedian, but I love seeing his range – because we all know he’s got it!
* What is your favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment (from the ‘Daily Show’, Wigfield, ‘Strangers With Candy’, etc.)?: Going on that last thought, “Even Stepvhen”. We had a surplus of Butterfingers here from Halloween, which made me think of their Halloween skit. Watching Stephen interact with Steve and Jon reminds me a lot of how I am with my friends – that same sort of crazy humor.

Thank you! ^_^ It was a highlight of my week-long vacation to Boston and NYC. I had destroyed my feet in Boston, and I didn’t have warm enough clothes, so to stand outside after the show and wait in the cold was dreadful. But getting the bracelet was THE BEST PART. I almost didn’t get the picture, but since I had to compete with my friends for a spot next to him (and instead wound up behind Stephen), I’m determined to get a picture of my own ^_^ But yes, his reaction after hitting me in the side with the bracelet was so adorable! I bragged about it for weeks. Now I’m waiting for my students to ask about my bracelet (but they never do).
Saying of my students, before I went up they asked why I was going to miss two classes. I told them I was going to see Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. I asked if they knew who Jon was and some did, but none knew Stephen! (They were elementary-aged, though; that some knew Jon was a surprise in and of itself!)

Oh I can relate – I told one of my good friends about seeing Stephen last weekend and I had to remind her who Stephen was. It was depressing.
When did you get a picture with him? Was it during the pre-taping? Just so I have an idea for if/when I finally get to go to a taping – if that ever happens, I am determined to get a picture! lol
November 8th, 2009 at 9:03 pm
This is to lockhart43: I got my picture with him after the show. We almost didn’t get it! When he finally left the building, none of us said anything. We said to each other, “Someone get him!” One of us yelled, “STEPHEN!” And he stopped and looked at us! It was hilarious!
Even now my students don’t know who Stephen is. They know of Steve Carell, but not Stephen. This time they don’t know Jon, though. Hit and miss ^_^;;

I think my favorite moments are probably during the October 26th Toss from Jon Stewart to Stephen. This was the toss where Stephen accused Jon of being a downer! LMAO. I'm cracking up just thinking about it. Their camaraderie just makes my heart skip a beat.

Hi, my name is Gabby I have commented a few times here and there but never introduced myself, so I thought I would! I’m 22 from Kansas City, I just graduated college in May and now I work in a doctors office (not the dream job, but hey you take what you can get right?) When The Colbert Report started I would watch it occasionally, but I wasn’t like a crazy fan. I am actually a bigger Strangers With Candy fan than anything. But as a little time went on I started watching the show more and more often and then it became like a daily routine. I think my favorite thing about it (much like Strangers) is the ridiculousness of it, I’m just really drawn to odd humor I guess. I have never been to a taping, the one time I was in New York Colbert’s show didn’t even exist but me and my friends did go to a taping of Conan (I’m obsessed with Conan by the way) and it was AWESOME!! I had a friggin blast doing that so if I ever get back to New York (which I plan to) I am definitely gonna try to go to a taping!

Hi, I’m Elizabeth.
Age: 23
Location: NYC
Occupation: Seeking work in nonprofit organizations, but the recession is killing me at the moment.
Fan Origin: I got into the Daily Show in high school- still not sure how, as I’ve never had cable. I believe a friend linked me to Jon’s post-9/11 speech. Since then I’ve kept up with it, and later the Report, online and via friends’ recordings.
Taping: Yep! This summer, I had the first ticket, got to shake his hand, and see the Vaxadoodle segment in person.
Favorite from TCR: I love the Cheating Death segment and his hand gestures when he demands Emmys. And Filliam H. Muffman!
Klassic Kolbert: Stephen pouncing on Jon during the ‘Pitch’ sketch always makes me smile. Also his report on Cookie Monster’s ‘binging and purging’ ways. From SWC, him and Paul doing Carry on Wayward Son, I think that was the end of Yes You Can’t. (“That’s what I want to be- a robot!”)

Occupation: I’d love one, but I currently do not have one. So, I’m looking, but with the holidays I’m trying to steer clear of things like retail and restaurants.
How did you get into being a fan of Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’? This happened the summer Steve Carell’s movie The 40 Year Old Virgin came out. I looked to see what else he had done then subsequently stumbled into TDS and TCR. I vividly remember Stephen talking about running for president. And I haven’t stopped watching him since. I didn’t even let a thing like a month in Germany stop me from getting my daily dose of TCR.
Have you been to a taping? Yup. This past July I made my 3rd trip to NYC where I not only attended a taping of TCR, but I also went to a TDS taping, a John Oliver show, a Wyatt Cenac show and I stopped Jason Jones in the street just to talk to him. It was a wonderful TCR taping. I got to sit in the front row where I was high fived twice. After the show I stuck around and met Stephen briefly to get a picture. It was an extremely long and rainy day, but totally worth it.
What’s your favorite sketch/song from Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’? The dance off between Stephen and Rain. I am so jealous of Stephen’s dancing.
What is your favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment (from the ‘Daily Show’, Wigfield, ‘Strangers With Candy’, etc.)? This is hard one. I think I’ll answer with the epic three way at the Emmys. They were all genuinely happy and giddy and it was so adorable.
And the tying moment would be the Even Stevphen Halloween. Or the Richard Lewis interview Stephen and Steve did together.

Hi all, let’s do this thing!
Age: Turning the big 3-0 in january (trying to figure out if i should have a grown-up dinner or kids party for celebration)
location: gothenburg, sweden
been a fan since: sometime late 2006 when i went searching for Michael Moores sodo-mobile-skit on youtube and someone had linked to the “orange juice turn you gay”-bit Stephen did on TDS. And i became hooked immidiately! Who was this comedic genius!?! This was in the glorious days before the Viacom-purge of all things Comedy Central on youtube so there were an amazing amount of clips to watch. One of them: The correspondents dinner speech.
I’ve always loved Amy Sedaris whenever she visited Letterman so i was delighted to find out that they had worked together (and how fabulous, dark and awsomely weird their collaborations was/is).
I’ve since watch every single ep of the report (and i believe most of his other work, don’t ask me how…). It so hard to choose favourite bits, i guess it all depends on my mood. Formidable Opponent is my favourite recurring segmet though (favourite line: You can’t prepare for frogs!!!! beacause it’s crazy silly and never fails to make me laugh). But the Iraq shows made me cry more than once, and again listening to his interviews afterward beacause he seems so deeply moved by the experience.
Klassic Kolbert: Again too many to mention, i do adore listening to the audio-commentary for Strangers. And the interviews Leonard Lopate did with the Holy Trinity (Colbert/Sedaris/Dinello) when Wigfield was released and performed. (Also Stephen as Raven, i don’t think i have to say any more ;-P)

How did I become a fan: I started watching videos of Jon and Stephen on youtube, when Stephen was still a correspondent on TDS. I couldnt stop laughing after watching it and kept watching ever since (well not on youtube anymore^^)
Taping: I attended my first taping on 7/30/2009. I was first in line, became Stephen’s Official German friend and got a picture with him. Such an amazing experience :)
Favorite from TCR: Hard to say, but I absolutely love Formidable Opponent and Cheating Death.
Klassic Kolbert: Prince Charles for sure. Also THis week in God and Even Stevphen. Besides his TDS segments I love Strangers with Candys, too.

How did you get into being a fan of Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: I was on vacation last summer and we just started watching The Daily Show and The Colbert Report in the hotel rooms and I was instantly hooked. Been a fan ever since! :D
Have you been to a taping?: Sadly, no. But I shall one day!!
What’s your favorite sketch/song from Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: In general, I love “The WORD” and “Cheating Death”. In particular, there is really no way to choose. I have a different fave sketch each week when he comes up with something new!! As for the songs, I love the Barry Manilow duet and “Charlene” and “Singin’ in Korean.” And, naturally, the entire Colbert Christmas. ;)
What is your favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment (from the ‘Daily Show’, Wigfield, ‘Strangers With Candy’, etc.)?: I love it all!! Honestly, there’s no way to choose just one. I adore his work on The Daily Show, Strangers with Candy cracks me up, I think Wigfield is pure comic genius and I also loved him as Phil Ken Sebben on “Harvey Birdman.” :D

Hello, Zoners! I’ve been here for quite some time under various names and even though my job leaves me little time to comment on posts these days (*sniffle*), I still love being a part of the Zoner community when I do have the time. It’s been so great reading new Zoner’s entries here so I thought I would share too:
Age: *gulp* 32
Location: Jersey, baby! (Hillsborough, actually, not far from Princeton)
Occupation: Medical Editor
How did you get into being a fan of Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: In 2007 I only noticed how often The Daily Show kept getting re-aired, so I started watching and instantly became a fan. Hubby started watching The Report afterward, and even though I didn’t get Stephen’s humor at first, after he broke his wrist and launched the WristStrong campaign, I was hooked. I am now a junkie for all things Colbert.
Have you been to a taping?: Good God, yes! This past June I attended a taping and next to my wedding day and the day I graduated college, it was one of the best days of my entire life. Got to sit in the front row, Stephen answered my audience question, he shook my hand and gave me a high five, AND got on that night’s episode!
What’s your favorite sketch/song from Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: That’s like choosing a favorite child. I’d have to say the Strike Show as I don’t think I’ve ever cried during an episode of the show before or since.
What is your favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment (from the ‘Daily Show’, Wigfield, ‘Strangers With Candy’, etc.)? I really love the Responsible Drinking segment he did with Steve Carell. And who doesn’t love the Prince Charles/Banana character break? And the book/bear smoothie because I love it when Stephen swears. Don’t ask me why though.

I love when Stephen swears, too. I can’t help it. :)
Part of me got giddy at the Two River benefit whenever he would swear – it was an extra bonus whenever he dropped the F bomb lol.

How did you get into being a fan of Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: my brother bought my dad “IAAASCY” and he never read it, so I picked it up and read it and absolutely loved it, so I started to watch the show and couldn’t get enough (naturally)
Have you been to a taping? YES!! I was lucky enough to this past summer and it was definitely in the Top 10 moments I will forever cherish-it was so great!
What’s your favorite sketch/song from Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’? The Craziest F#?King Thing I’ve Ever Heard and Nailed ‘Em are my two favorite segments for sure and my favorite song-There Are Much Worse Things to Believe In…love his voice in it :D
What is your favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment (from the ‘Daily Show’, Wigfield, ‘Strangers With Candy’, etc.)?: hmm, I think Strangers With Candy is genius-I absolutely love it! Plus, this clip from his Daily Show days… http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-march-27-2001/drink-responsibly oh and this one…i can’t help it.. http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-november-10-2003/prince-charles-scandal

•Location: Cincinnati, OH area. I’m not a native so feel free to make jokes about Cincy.
•Occupation: Full time mom; part time veterinary technician
•How did you get into being a fan of Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: I would watch TCR and TDS occasionally but just before the writers’ strike I had a moment of “these shows are really good! I should watch them more often.” and that was that. I was hooked.
•Have you been to a taping?: Yep! Twice. It’s so much fun!
•What’s your favorite sketch/song from Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: I have to agree about “Much Worse Things to Believe In” and I love the Cheating Death segments.
•What is your favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment (from the ‘Daily Show’, Wigfield, ‘Strangers With Candy’, etc.)?: Hmmmm… Tough call. Well the huge character break in the Prince Charles scandal bit still makes me laugh but I haven’t seen very many clips from his TDS days. I loved SWC! I don’t think I could pick a favorite moment from that. The whole series was hilarious.

How did you get into being a fan of Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: I didn’t know it at the time but my first Stephen experience was The Ambiguously Gay Duo. I thought they were hilarious. As for finally knowing and loving Stephen, my husband was an avid watcher of TDS and introduced me to it when we first started dating. I’d always wanted to watch it because I had heard good things, but I had never taken the leap. I remember seeing “Tanks A Lot” and thinking Stephen was a genius and then paying specific attention to the show whenever he was on it from then on out. I was really excited when he got his own show but for whatever reason I didn’t religiously watch it until about a year or so ago. The WHCD speech turned me from a fan to what I am today. :)
Have you been to a taping?: Yes! I went on June 23rd, 09 and had the time of my life! I met him the night before by accident and shook his hand, he sang “Fly Me To the Moon” to me during the time he asks for questions, and I met him again after the show and got a picture (and more singing). I’m going to try and go to NYC again next summer and hopefully see TDS too.
What’s your favorite sketch/song from Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: The Starbucks freakout and shower scene, tumbling with Amy and “Tad” (you can’t beat those three together), any tosses with cute moments and/or character breaks, his interview with Rev Tony Perkins (nailed him!) and any other segment or Word where he talks about gay rights/marriage because I love to see “Stephen’s” crazy take on the subject (“I only got married as a taunt to gay people”) while seeing Stephen’s passion and understanding of the topic shining through.
What is your favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment (from the ‘Daily Show’, Wigfield, ‘Strangers With Candy’, etc.)?: Too many ahhhh. I’ve become a crazy SWC fan and I’ve turned my family and many of my friends on to the show as well. Specifically, my favorite episode is “Who Wants Cake” and I really love any Chuck and Geoffrey interaction as well (like when they argue in the Ask Jerri episode and then it’s revealed to be in front of the entire class). I love Wigfield a ton, first reading it and then listening to the audiobook on my drive to New York. Anything on The Daily Show is always gold, especially when he’s with Jon. Price Charles would have to be up there in all time favorite moments. Laughing Stephen is the best thing ever.

How did you get into being a fan? I’ve been watching Stephen since his Daily Show days, and followed him over to the Report. Watching the DS during the Bush years was a necessity — you had to laugh about the political situation to keep from crying…
Have you been to a taping? Sadly, not yet, even though NYC’s only an hour away.
Favorite sketch/song: the recent sketch where he compared Glenn Beck’s sincerity to his own, showing video clips where they talked about the same topics (except Stephen said them first!)
Favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment: ooh, so many. How about:
“Jon, before we begin, I’d like to get something off my chest, before I get ‘outed’ by the bloggers. My real name is Ted Hitler…. Three years ago I killed a panda. Ling-Ling! Or the other one. I can’t tell them apart. In my own defense, it was dark, I was drunk, and it was delicious. Sorry to ruin your scoop, ColbertKilledAPanda.com.”

I’m there too; turning 49 next June.
I started watching The Daily Show when it first aired with host Craig Kilborne, and continued with The Colbert Report when it first aired.
I haven’t been to a taping, but I’m impatient waiting hours in line for anything except amusement park rides (yes I’m one of those).
Not sure of my favorite Stephen Colbert favorite segment. I have great fondness for the interview about living in the upper branch levels of giant trees.

*How did you get into being a fan of Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’? My dad pulled me to the couch one day during the summer of ‘07, and after finally getting the joke, I greatly enjoyed it. Stephen’s also the reason I watch TDS. While watching TCR, I learned that he was on TDS and decided that if he was on it, it should be ‘kinda funny and not horrible’.
*Have you ever been to a taping? No, although my sister said she would take me for my 18th b-day. I’m thinking of making her go one day for me.
*What’s your favorite sketch/song from Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’? My favorite songs (I can’t choose just one) would have be ‘Singin’ in Korean’ (for the lulz) and I jump on the bandwagon for ‘Worse Things To Believe In’
My favorite sketchs would the ‘Threatdown’, it never fails to make me smile, and ‘Cheating Death’ for the character breaks it causes.
*What is your favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment (from the ‘Daily Show’, Wigfield, ‘ Strangers With Candy’, etc.)? The ‘Pitch’ segment from TDS, it always makes me cry with laughter. Also the ‘King of Glory’ dance from SWC.

How did you get into being a fan of Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: A friend of mine showed me a clip about 3 or 4 years ago, and I’ve been hooked ever since.
Have you been to a taping?: YES! Two times: the first was in January, the first show of the year, and the other one was in the summer. I managed to witness the force of nature that is Jeff Goldblum! If the person with the red hair that attended a taping in the summer (the guest was Paul Muldoon) who did a great eagle imitation (shriek and claws included) before the show is reading, I just wanted to say: thanks for the laughs! :)
What’s your favorite sketch/song from Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: Cheating Death is always great, mainly because there are guaranteed character breaks in it. Also, the Threatdown.
What is your favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment (from the ‘Daily Show’, Wigfield, ‘Strangers With Candy’, etc.)?: The Prince Charles “banana scandal”, hands down. I’m a sucker for the character breaks.

My story seems to mirror that of quite many others – occasional commenter, all-round lurker and daily reader (and always very very appreciative of all the work that obviously goes into making a site like this run as smoothly & brilliantly and as it does!).
- Age: 22
- Location: Finland
- Occupation: Student (English Translation & Philology, doing my master’s degree)
- How did you get into being a fan of Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: I’ve wondered about this myself and I’m still not entirely sure exactly how it happened. Neither TDS or TCR have ever been aired in Finland but when the Huckabee feud came about (we do have Conan in Finland :)), I remember recognising Jon from the Oscars (being as I am a huge film buff) but not Stephen. I guess I wound up Youtube-ing stuff from the feud and gradually getting into TDS clips and TCR clips. But what I think sealed the deal once and for all was coming across the White House Correspondents Dinner video. I know this is preaching to the choir, but I was absolutely blown away by it – by both the courage and the funny.
- Have you been to a taping?: Sorry to say but no, not yet. It’s on my ‘To-Do-Before-Age-X’ list.
- What’s your favorite sketch/song from Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: Well, when it comes to songs, I’m gonna have to go with Charlene. As for segments, The Word and Cheating Death are the ones that impress/amuse me the most consistently. I loved the recent ‘Snus’ what with all the character breaks. And the silent Word, ‘Sigh’. The said Starbucks freak-out. The Atone Phone. Iraq. Chili-Delphia (esp. the Independence Park & National Constitution Center). Honorable mention: The 1952 Helsinki Games: The Reindeer Roars. Wonderfully surreal, wildly inaccurate. :D
- What is your favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment (from the ‘Daily Show’, Wigfield, ‘Strangers with Candy’, etc.)?: Many of these have already been mentioned, but the Prince Charles Scandal, all of the Even Stevphens, Drinking Responsibly.. Other favorites: Another World, Census 2000, Stephen as Al Sharpton, the Emmy Celebration of 2003, the Hell bit from the 2000 Republican National Convention. Oh, and the Pitch. And I can’t leave out ‘Finland’ from 2002. :) Made me proud (of being in the ‘taint of Scandinavia”, that is). Now, if you’d excuse me, I’m needed in my designated suicide watch. :D

Age: 21
Hometown: Kansas City, Kansas suburbia. Actually closer to KC, MO but across State Line.
Occupation: Student at the University of Kansas. Majoring in Spanish, Economics, minoring in Latin American Studies. I’m also a supernerd: Marching Band for the win!
Fan history: I love the Daily Show, and so naturally when the Colbert Report came into being, I decided to “give it a shot”. And I’ve been watching ever since.
Taping? Not yet. Maybe someday.
Favorite sketch/song: It would have to be a tie between the time he declared that KU would win the NCAA Tournament because we have NSA in our name, and when he had Barry Manilow on. Not because I like Barry Manilow – I don’t – but because I had no idea Stephen could sing, and sing well. So that was a pleasant surprise.
Klassic Kolbert: This Week in God. I love discussing religion (as long as it doesn’t dissolve into “you’re going to Hell because”). I find religious humor to be among the most effective because it touches near my heart. But This Week In God also pointed out many misconceptions about certain religions and religious holidays (like Hanukkah being the Jewish High Holy Days… NOT) and other common misunderstandings.

How did you get into being a fan? I was a fan of Stephen on The Daily Show and occasionally watched SWC when it was on, but didn’t become a hardcore Colbert fan until the Indecision 2008 election show. Not sure what happened, but I am now completely smitten :)
Ever been to a taping? Alas, no. Some day.
Favorite sketch/song? My favorite song is probably The Girl is Mine, along with the couple of times that Stephen has played the guitar. Oh, and Stephen singing the MASH song with a bear puppet. My favorite sketch… hmmm… Cheating Death is my favorite segment, so I have loved all of those. Also loved the inauguration breakdown, the time that Rush was there and the crew kept messing with the show, the “throwing kittens in a wood chipper” part of that one BKAD, and for some odd reason, the toss about semi-conscious distraction, where Stephen can’t talk because he has to remove all traces of gummy adhesive from a water bottle.
Favorite Klassic Kolbert moment: Too many to pick! All Even Stevphens, of course, So You’re Living in a Police State, the time he assembled a diverse panel at the conventions, the Semi-Cas Airdrop segment, Stephen singing Kansas songs in the career episode of SWC, and the last episide of SWC when he refers to Mr. Jellineck as his lover.

How did you get into being a fan of Stephen or the Colbert Report?
Came to the Daily Show around 9/11 (that infamous speech) and followed ever since. Stephen was my favourite correspondent instantly. Watched SWC – loved it. And then came the Report. Unfortunately being in the UK, watching the Report has always been a bit of a mission what with it changing channels and going on and off air. However, I just spent a year living in New York where I could fully indulge my passion for the show and never miss an episode. Now that I’ve just arrived back in England to find it on Itnues the obsession continues. (Wish I was back in Manhattan though- so jealous of you all at the Stand Up benefit Springsteen and Stephen- not fair!)
Have you been to a taping?
Yep went to a Daily Show taping and a Report taping over the summer. Out of my entire year spent in NY those two days were hands down the best!
What’s your favourite sketch/song from Stephen or the Colbert Report?
The Word and Formidable opponent are genius- great writing and great delivery. Cheating Death is always funny and I’m a sucker for character breaks. The Strike Show, Charlene and the dance off with Rain were stand out. The Iraq shows were outstanding – Emmy next year please!
What is your favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment (from the ‘Daily Show’, Wigfield, ‘Strangers With Candy’, etc.)?:
There are so many to mention. Daily Show wise – The Prince Charles Scandal (being a Brit it is particularly amusing), all of the Even Stevphens, This Week in God, the Pitch segment (“I am so mad at Bernie with a Y” too funny). Also an segments with Stephen attempting Yiddish are priceless. Love SWC – particularly Amy’s work. Also love to see Stephen in an in depth interview show such as Charlie Rose where we get to see a bit of the man and method behind the madness!
Thanks so much for this site. I always check in with the NFZ. Would be lost without it, keep up the great work!

Hi :) I am a high school student. I live in Tampa, FL. One day I was just flipping through the channels, and started watching the Daily Show and Colbert. I was hooked and have never stopped watching.I think I have been watching for about 2 years now, and after only a few months I was a Zoner. I want to go to a taping so much, but I have to wait until I am 18. As soon as me and some of my friends are 18, we are going to a taping though. I love journalism, and think Colbert is hilarious. Anytime Stephen sings/dances/laughs I have a new favorite clip.

Hi all! Frequent lurker, rare commenter here.
* Age: 28
* Location: Los Angeles
* Occupation: RN
* How did you get into being a fan of Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: I started out a fan of Steve Carell’s after watching Season 1 of “The Office”. Then I saw “The 40-year old Virgin” & became a bigger fan, so I imdb’d him & saw tons of TDS episodes listed, started watching those, & soon after became a fan of Stewart & Colbert. Now my dream is for the 3 of them (+Ricky Gervais) to co-host or star in some show/movie together (w/appearances from past & present correspondents). Long shot, but doesn’t hurt to dream, right?
* Have you been to a taping?: Sadly, no. Hopefully, someday!
* What’s your favorite sketch/song from Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: Anytime he sings, but faves are his duet w/John Legend & him singing the national anthem w/Carell & “Stephen Colbert Salutes Steve Carell”. Also “Better Know a District,” the Iraq week, when he put JOHN (not Jon) Stewart on notice & anytime he brings out Sweetness.
* What is your favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment (from the ‘Daily Show’, Wigfield, ‘Strangers With Candy’, etc.)?: Even Stevphens (esp. the Halloween one), Prince Charles, Drink Responsibly

I’m not a fan of stunt casting, but I’d make an exception for Colbert to appear on “The Office.” I was hoping he’d be Jan’s ex, Gould – but it doesn’t seem like Jan will be coming back anytime soon (not a spoiler, I’m just guessing). But it’d be difficult since these 2 shows are shot on opposite coasts. Ah well, I’ll keep hoping. :)

I didn’t care for what the writers did with Jan. Once her and Michael hooked up, they just made her a crazy loon.
Holly I did like, and hope that they eventually bring her back. She had the dorky quality that matched Michaels perfectly. Since Holly, his character has been much more perverse.
If they were gonna put Colbert in an episode, probably the best one they shoulda done it in was when they went to shoot at Niagara Falls. They coulda made him be the ship captain and marry Jim and Pam =)

Welcome, DJ Jazzy Flax! I never knew who Steve Carell was until I started getting into Klassic Kolbert. I started watching The Office about the end of Season 2, and have adored it ever since. And I think that a Steve/Stephen/Ricky collaboration would probably make my head explode.
Thanks for coming out of the shadows for a bit, and again, welcome!

Location: Thumb of Michigan – it’s the only place to live where I can actually point out my town on my hand. I’m not always proud of that.
Occupation: Student – I also am a secretary for a bailbondsman/process server.
How did you get into being a fan of Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’? Well, I’ve always been a fan of The Daily Show, but really started paying attention to TDS and The Colbert Report during my senior year of high school, so about 4 years ago. But I really became a hardcore TCR fan this past June when Stephen went to Iraq.
Have you been to a taping? If only…
What’s your favorite sketch/song from Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?
Oh, there’s so many lol. I would say my favorite segments on TCR would be ThreatDown, Tip of the Hat/Wag of the Finger, and Cheating Death. Although, I always enjoy a good Word – The Word about “Blackwashing” is my favorite. I also love the “Meta-Free-Phor-All” with Sean Penn and the whole “Green Screen Challenge” and “Guitarmageddon,” if only for the awesome ridiculousness of it lol.
What is your favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment (from the ‘Daily
Show’, Wigfield, ‘Strangers With Candy’, etc.)? The Prince Charles/Banana segment is my favorite moment from The Daily Show. I also love all of the Indecision 2004 coverage, especially Stephen’s last report from the Democratic National Convention. I love EVERY bit of Wigfield, but Raven and Russell Hokes are my faves. As far as Strangers With Candy, I LOVE the end credit dance sequence from the series finale, and my absolutely favorite episode is “The Blank Page” – Noblet is so hilarious in that episode. The commentary from the SWC movie is brilliant as well :).
I’m also going to agree with Byrnie91 about the Charlie Rose interview – it’s one of my favorite interviews he’s done. I love his first Letterman interview back in 2005 as well.

Michigan! My bestie (also a Colbert fan) is from Detroit. I visited her this summer (loved it, too!). I have to admit, I didn’t believe the “using your hand as a map” thing was real, but she said it was!
Just had to interject that xD

Hahah yeah if I try to explain to other people from out of state where I live by pointing to a spot on my hand, they always look at me funny. My brother and I actually did that at the Two River benefit when we were talking to a couple from Pennsylvania lol.
I imagine it’s harder on the people from the Upper Peninsula – they have to use both of their hands ha :D

4. Fan origin story: I’ve been watching since October 17, 2005. I started watching TDS in high school, and when Stephen got his show, there was no way that I wasn’t watching.
5. Taping: Yep, four times. I was there during the strike, for the “water episode”, and twice in 2009. They are all special for their own reasons.
6. What’s your favorite sketch/song: Of course the entire Strike episode, but specific sketches – “Ching Chong Ding Dong” and the Brad Sherman BKAD when Sherman does the robot impression, and Stephen responds, “What are you doing?”
7. Favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment: The episode of SWC when Jerri learns how to read. Also, all 8 episodes of Dana Carvey

Hey all! *waves shyly* I’m a total lurker, but have been checking this site faithfully (obbsessively?) for at least a year and a half.
Age: 31
Location: Orange County (for the next 5 months), but originally from Chicago
Occupation: Ornithologist (I’m a professional bird nerd, in other words)
How did you get into being a fan of Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: I was a TDS fan for years, and watched TCR occasionally when it spun off, but it was the WHCD that blew my mind and turned me from a casual fan to a Superfan.
Have you been to a taping?: YES! My sister has lived in NYC for years and is friends with former head writer/now co-exec-producer Tom Purcell, so he got us VIP tickets. (Sidenote: Tom RULES, you guys.) The taping I went to was on 9/22/09, the ep where Stephen & Jeff Goldblum did the Battleship sketch. (To the Zoner who caught Stephen’s captain’s hat, I was sitting 2 rows directly behind you.) During the commercial break, I lip-synched along with “Holland, 1945″ and Stephen caught my eye and started singing along too. I thought my heart was going to explode!
What’s your favorite sketch/song from Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: Being an ornithologist I have a real soft spot for Stephen Jr, and I love when he talks about the various species that have been named after him. If I EVER discover a new species or start radio-tagging wildlife, you can bet I’ll be naming something after Stephen! I also loveloveLOVE The Word. I also love any skit where we get to see Stephen dance, because the man can move.
What is your favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment (from the ‘Daily Show’, Wigfield, ‘Strangers With Candy’, etc.)? I don’t even know how to choose, but back in the day I had all the EvenStevphens bookmarked on YouTube. Other personal faves: Stephen as Al Sharpton, any toss where he and Jon crack each other up, and the always classic Banana Incident. Also I am obsessed with Wigfield, I’ve probably listened to it at least 10 times (4x this summer alone, when I put 10,000 miles on my car).

Oh, and how I remember the glory days of YouTube! And the Great YouTube Purge of 2006 will not be forgotten at *this* website! Thank goodness that ColbertNation.com has done such a fantastic job of archiving TCR vids.
I’ve heard very nice things about Tom Purcell, and hopefully I can meet him someday. It’s good to hear from yet another person that he’s a real stand-up guy.
And I have listened to Wigfield probably a few dozen times beginning to end. You are amongst friends here. :)

Yes, Tom is a great guy–my sis met him through the NYC improv scene, which she is very active in. He actually got her & her boyfriend backstage for the ep where Kris Kristofferson was on, because she & her bf are huge KK fans. And she got to actually MEET Stephen, which I am still jealous about!

How did you get into being a fan of Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: Was feeling rather down around October 2007 and thought “Why don’t I watch that ridiculousy happy man who comes after The Daily Show?” I’ve been hooked every since.
Have you been to a taping? Yes! September 2, 2009. Asked him to sing “L-O-V-E” during the Q&A and he did!
What’s your favorite sketch/song from Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: I love his “Fallback Position” segment and his interviews because we see him at his improv best:) As a fangirl, I love his duet with John Legend AND when he talked about weatherizing women’s homes while holding a rose! Also loved the episode with Andrew Young (cry every time at end of segment about Stephen’s dad). Found it so sexy when he had the guts to take a ride in that jet during Iraq week…even if he spilled his guts in the process;)
What is your favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment (from the ‘Daily Show’, Wigfield, ‘Strangers With Candy’, etc.)? “There Are Much Worse Things to Believe In,” from A Colbert Christmas. TDS: Prince Charles, DNC, Stephen as Al Sharpton AND when Stephen is looking all sexy and artistic with stubble and wearing all black for this segment which of course aired on Valentine’s Day: http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-february-14-2005/the-gates
Also loved seeing his reaction when asked what Bob Hope would think of his Iraq shows. Also love his interviews with Terry Gross on Fresh Air. And, of course, LOVE his interview with Charlie Rose. Really fell for him after that!

How did you get into being a fan of Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: Would “tape” (yes, with a VCR) eps of The Daily Show and watch for Colbert or Carell…also any desk interaction with Jon! Wish I still had those tapes! That led to checking out his own show…which my brother highly recommended
Have you been to a taping? Yes! Last October…asked a question and Stephen performed the King of Glory Dance!
What’s your favorite sketch/song from Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?: Love Formidable Opponent and FallBack Positions and any time Stephen sings, I just love it when he does something unexpected or out of his element
What is your favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment (from the ‘Daily Show’, Wigfield, ‘Strangers With Candy’, etc.)? Ooo…this is tough! All Even Stevphens, the drinking experiment with Steve, Pitch (reality show pilot w/Jon and Steve), Ted Hitler, Convention Coverage, any and all character breaks. I also have a special place in my heart for Chuck Noblet because when I started teaching high school social studies, Strangers w/Candy was on! My department head and I would lament on how we wish we could say some of the things he does to Jerri![not that we were bad teachers...but you just have some of those days!]

Age: 48
Occupation: Full-time mother, retired teacher.

I’ve been watching TCR and TDS since July 2008.
Taping: Not yet. But I definitely would go if Stephen took his show on a world tour and managed to visit Australia. Unlikely, I know.
Favorite segments: – I’m a bit of a sucker for Tad.
– Just about all of the interviews.
– Whenever Stephen sings.
– The “knighting” by Queen Noor. For me, it was a bizarre case of Stephen going from the ridiculous to the sublime. It was meant to be a joke, but I found it strangely moving.
And can I just make a final confession? I often wonder if I would be a fan if Stephen wasn’t so good looking. He’s very witty, and very clever, but would I care about what he says if he was plain? I hate to be a Debbie Downer, and it probably doesn’t matter anyway. Just a thought.

Hi Rose!
Don’t feel bad. I think the fact that Stephen is so good-looking is part of the fangirl charm, ha. It’s like that with any famous person, though. I’m sure a lot of women also pay more attention to Jon because of his good looks as well. I think it’s just part of the package. Stephen is witty, hilarious, and clever, AND he’s ridiculously handsome and adorable. It’s a win-win situation. :D

It’s a positive thing that you ponder about how much physical attraction plays in one’s emotional attraction to someone. There’s nothing wrong with analyzing one’s underlying drives and motivated self-justifications. (As in I have the same Debbie Downer-type wonders too.)
I’m glad you’re here. Welcome!

Hi everyone, I have posted but never really introduced myself so-
Age – hmm “zenior zoner” :) I guess, heh.
Location – New York
Occupation – legal proofreader/part time photographer
First saw Stephen due to the “feud” with Conan and Jon during the writer’s strike. I thought the “fight” at the end was hilarious. Then I kind of forgot about it till the very end of 2008 when Stephen came on Conan’s show to talk about the Christmas special and started talking about re-writing Wikipedia and “controlling” the Nation and I started completely cracking up with the way he was going in and out of character. I guess it was then that I “got” Stephen and I’ve seen every show of 2009. Sadly not in person yet (I work at night which doesn’t help). But I hope someday.
Since I only became a fan last winter I don’t have a lot of earlier Stephen favorite bits but I love the tosses, especially “Jon’s a Downer,” “Keyboard Cat,” “Alphabet Game,” and more. I’ve also watched the old Dana Carvey shows on Youtube and he is great in them. “Waiters Nauseated by Food” is great!
I love so many of his segements but I think my overall favorites are the Threatdown (wish it came on more often) and Weirdest F-ing Thing…those always make me laugh. So many great interviews as well, just this year – Philippe Petit, Movits, Brian Cox (BTW that October 28 episode was my favorite of this entire year and I hope they put it on their emmy submission though I understand it will probably go to the Iraq shows).
Speaking of Iraq, commending Stephen and his crew for that brave effort and also love it that he involves us fans with Donors Choose, US Speedskating – love that he makes the effort for that.
Thanks to DB and everyone here at this site, glad it’s being recognized because it is a great place to post.

How did you get into being a fan of Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’? I’ve been a fan of his around the time I discovered TDS in April of 2006. That was before the YouTube purge and I watched every old clip of TDS I could find. I actually delayed watching TCR as much as I could because I still wanted to “live in a world” where Stephen was still on TDS. Ha! But then of course, I gave in after a couple of weeks.
Have you been to a taping? No… but I would so be there if I wasn’t halfway around the world [and poor]. :(
favorite sketch/song from Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’: There are so many! “Can I Interest You in Hanukkah?” and the BKAD segments maybe.

* Age – 27
* Location – a quick bus ride away from New York
* Occupation – Grad student/college employee-type-person
* How did you get into being a fan of Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’? – I was already a fan of The Ambiguously Gay Duo and Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law before I knew that Stephen did any of the voices, and I used to watch the Dana Carvey Show when it was on ABC, back when I was in middle school. I watched the Report every once in a while, but didn’t really get into it (and all things Colbert) until 2 things happened. First, I saw A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All, and then forced my husband to watch it with me every time it was on because it was just. that. awesome. Then, while trying to get tickets to a few other late-night shows last year, I landed 2 for The Colbert Report. The rest is history.
* Have you been to a taping? – 3 times! First in December 08, where I got to ask Stephen who his favorite Harvey Birdman character was (he said Reducto and even did the voice!) and he flung me a WristStrong bracelet during one of the breaks (SQUEE!!!!) We went again in January 09 (the night before the inauguration), and I took my aunt to see the show in July 09. It is, by far, the most fun you can have for free in New York! I’m planning to go again sometime in the spring to see the new set I’ve heard rumors about (or are those just rumors? Someone help me out here!)
* What’s your favorite sketch/song from Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’? – Sketch: Cheating Death; Songs: “He’s Singin’ in Korean” from the Report and “There Are Much Worse Things to Believe In” from A Colbert Christmas.
* What is your favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment (from the ‘Daily Show’, Wigfield, ‘Strangers With Candy’, etc.)? – Most of my favorites come from the Daily Show, like “Connecticut School of Broadcasting”, the Halloween “Even Stevphen”, “Tanks a Lot”, and “Drink Responsibly”. I also love “Waiters Nauseated by Food” from Dana Carvey and the “Blackwatch Plaid” episode of Harvey Birdman.
Thank you to everyone else who posted! I love reading about everyone else’s experiences! ::heads back into lurker mode::

I’m a bit late to this, but loved reading everyone’s replies, and felt the need to add another British one!
Age: 22
Location: South-East England
Occupation: 3rd year BA Media Student/Old time portrait photographer at a theme park in the summer (I dress people up as cowboys and take their photo….its a bit weird, but I love it!)
I’d been watching the Daily Show for quite a while, and was talking to people about it on a Green Day forum, they said, if I loved the Daily Show, then I have to watch TCR. I watched one episode and haven’t stopped since. Think that was about 2 and half years ago? But I have caught up on all the old episodes of TCR and TDS, so I feel like I’ve been watching both from the start!
I have yet to go to a taping, due to being in….England, but I’m determined to get to New York City at some point after I graduate, I would love to live there for a year and just go to as many tapings as possible. It would be a dream come true! I LOVE reading taping reports, so don’t ever stop writing them!
Favourite segments are BKAD and The Threat down, they always seem to get the biggest laughs from me. Although to be honest, I love them all. “Who’s been f****ng the Coral Reef?” still sticks as one of my favourite lines. I love it when guests get out of control, or surprise Stephen (Jane Fonda, Richard Branson). The interview with John Mellencamp always sticks in my mind, I cried with laughter when Stephen pushed over the table! I have so many favourite moments, I could write an essay about them. Basically when it comes to Stephen singing – I love it all, no question. Also, I love it when The Word is just so clever, so well written, delivered, that it blows your mind.
Ah wow, I could write about TCR forever!
Favourite Klassic Kolbert = EVEN STEVPHEN!!
Little extra bit – I wish the comedy central store delivered to the UK, because I am still desperate for a Wrist Strong bracelet and a mini on notice board!
Any other UK people out there? Really need to join forces and badger More4 into getting TCR.

Hi! I’ve been following NFZ for a while, but I’ve never actually commented before. I figured this was a good a time as any to introduce myself.
Age: 22
Location: D.C.
Occupation: Student
How I got into TCR: I watched both TCR and TDS pretty regularly (I’m a journalism major, so the shows provide some well-needed relief from my studies haha), but I really became a fan after seeing the White House Correspondents Dinner speech. I guess the thing I love most is how much fun Stephen seems to be having when he does the show.
Been to a taping: Sadly, no, but I did get to go to the Two Rivers event last week! It was fabulous, as all the reports have said!
Favorite segments: The WORD is classic – I especially loved the one Stephen did where he doesn’t say anything at all. Cheating Death and BKAD are also awesome, as are any and all character breaks.
Klassic Kolbert: I love(!) the Prince Charles sketch – it can always make me laugh. SWC is great as well – “Ask Jerri” is a hi-larious episode – and I’m currently reading Wigfield.
Well, that’s it – thanks for all your hard work on the site!

How did you get into being a fan of Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’? I watched Exit 57 back when I was in college, then was super into SWC when it was originally on (still love it, of course). Watched TDS back when it was still Kilbourne, which is when I really started to appreciate Mr. Colbert since I saw how versatile he is as a performer.
Have you been to a taping? Alas, no. I’m on the wrong coast!!
What’s your favorite sketch/song from Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’? Anytime when Stephen geeks out (since I’m a geek)… The first one that springs to mind is the “transitive property” thing from the Conan/Jon/Stephen fight.
What is your favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment (from the ‘Daily Show’, Wigfield, ‘Strangers With Candy’, etc.)? Gah, too many to name! I love the Louis Pasteur/naughty cow scene in “Invisible Love”. Another one is SC as Thea in Wigfield – I’ve only listened to the Audiobook (like 100 times, haha) so I don’t know what any of the pictures look like, but when Thea is talking about witchcraft and wiccans it cracks me up so hard.
It’s fun to read everyone’s stories! Great idea, DB! :)

How did you get into being a fan of Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’? This is gonna be embarrassing, but anyway: I used to be a huge fan of the X-Files, so I watched “Playing by Heart” for Gillian Anderson. However, I kind of fell for Jon Stewart and found out he has this sweet little TV show (he’s not that famous over here). Then there was Stephen and the rest is history.
Have you been to a taping? No. Actually, I haven’t even been to the US.
What’s your favorite sketch/song from Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?
Tosses and character breaks pretty much make my life. Also, I love it when he tries to speak in a foreign language or with an accent, because frankly, he’s just really, really bad at it. Then there’s Cheating Death and the Spor Repor, and I love interviews in which he shows his geeky side.
What is your favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment (from the ‘Daily Show’, Wigfield, ‘Strangers With Candy’, etc.)? If I had to choose one moment it would probably be the Prince Charles Scandal.

How did you get into being a fan of Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?
I watched the Daily Show during Kilborn days then after Jon began hosting I only watched it here and there. Then I remember being up late one night and catching the Colbert Report . I remember the exact moment I was hooked. It was the first time I saw Stephen introduce his guest then he proceeded to run to the audience for high fives and adulation and bowing back to the table. I thought, “Who is this guy?” I was immediately attracted to his character’s foolish egocentricity.
Since then I discovered SWC, and Wigfield.
Have you been to a taping? Yes, my sweet husband indulged my Stephen crush in September of 2008 when we went to a taping together. Audience seating ticket #1 and #2! I remember half the set was closed off because they were still filming the Colbert Christmas special. There were a lot of Christmas decorations in the security area where we waited before going into the studio too. I got to touch the desk.
What’s your favorite sketch/song from Stephen or the ‘Colbert Report’?
The shows from Iraq were really great. I would have to say BKAD segments, Bears and Balls really make me laugh out loud. Also, anytime Stephen induces his fake gag reflex. Oh, and when he raises his eyebrow and looks right into to the camera.
What is your favorite ‘Klassic Kolbert’ moment (from the ‘Daily Show’, Wigfield, ‘Strangers With Candy’, etc.)? For SWC I would have to say “Dear Jerri”, and “Yes, You “Can’t”—hilarious to see Noblet deal with his dreams about being in a rock band.
I’m always interested in all things Stephen thanks to this site and Colbert University!
