Colbert Report Episode Guide 150pxEPISODE NUMBER: 7044 (March 31, 2011)
GUESTS: Piers Gibbon
SEGMENTS: Congressional Budget Menorah, Difference Makers – Roy Den Hollander, Madison as Hell
VIDEOS: Thursday, March 31, 2011

I apologize for the lateness of this guide and discussion. As you may have noticed, we’ve been having a few technical difficulties over the last few days. We’re still working out a few bumps, but hopefully we’ll be up and running at 100% really soon!

In lieu of my own commentary today, I’d like to share a part of a ‘Colbert Report’ taping report found by Gratefull on the Dirt & Matchwood Tumblr.

[Stephen] did the “table of contents” first and flubbed on the second part! He broke out into laughter and dropped his head to the desk and the crowd started hooting. :D When he flubs, it’s amazing…he gets kind of adorably bashful and it’s totally endearing.

I was kind of hoping he wouldn’t do a field piece when we were there…because the more Stephen on camera the better! So at first I was a little disappointed he was doing a Difference Makers segment. (Funny enough, @snackcar’s only other TCR taping had a Difference Makers segment, too) But I totally changed my tune when it actually happened because a) the segment was funny as hell and b) the entire time, Stephen watched the segment in a monitor over the center camera (so basically almost at my eyeline) and had the biggest most adorable and satisfied grin on his face…FOR THE ENTIRE SEGMENT. I was trying to watch on the overhead monitors but I kept glancing back at him just sitting there and smiling and laughing. It was too much :D

Paul and the other writers/staff came out between takes…so basically I got to stare at Paul’s back for a while. He is surprisingly trim! He’s got a teeny waist and thin legs and @snackcar and I couldn’t get over this. His outfit was fly, too…black dress shirt peeking out from a gray v-neck sweater, black trousers and black combat-y type boots (and of course his fantastic glasses.) We decided he looked like a grad assistant of Philosophy…don’t ask why, it was just random ahaha :D He actually turned and looked in our direction at one point and I died. SO handsome!

Second segment was great, as Stephen flubbed big time! It was the part where he was having the “argument” with that judge? (I think she was a judge.) He messed something up before going into the argument bit and you could see him make a frustrated face and say something to himself during the clip…then coming out of the clip he just kind of lost it in the middle of the argument. “This never happens! Except…for the time it happened earlier.” LOL :D

There was a lot of writer/Stephen discussion pre-interview (which was fantastic because YAY MORE PAUL!)…he also proceeded to mouth along to “F@#k You” by Cee Lo…air guitaring and making funny faces and grinning like a fool. GAH, his enthusiasm is amazing! I couldn’t see anything that happened during the interview (due to my angle/the position of the cameras) but he flubbed twice coming out of the interview. He made a comment to the guest about him doing too many things (because the book he was promoting was different from the special that was airing) and he also asked him another question that didn’t make it to air (about whether or not he would have tasted human flesh if given the chance when he was there…Piers said “Probably yes” lololol)

There was a long chat with the writers pre-out. They had to retake the menorah scene because they had “technical difficulties” or something? (And I think he made a comment about hopefully not burning down the studio, lol) I didn’t understand because it seemed to go over fine the first time and the edit they did on the show was kind of clunky, imo? But whatever! So they lit the candles again and I guess they were getting the cameras ready and Stephen was like “We have to do this fast because these candles won’t last much longer…..or I could do some meth.” (I guess that would be an interesting attempt to speed things up, lol)

The funny thing was when he snubbed out the candle, the one next to it re-lit it! I think Stephen must have noticed because he kind of made a face and laughed a little, but they just kept going with it. What you saw on TV was a mix of the first and second takes. Then they did the close and that was that! Stephen shot the fire extinguisher once more into the air (lol) and thanked everyone for coming and that was it!

What did all of you think of Thursday’s episode? Leave it in the comments!

Loved this episode! Piers Gibbon, although rather a little too pleased with himself, made for an interesting interview, but it was Roy Den Hollander who cracked me up [and nearly cracked my toe, when I dropped my laptop due to laughing so much] He may be available, ladies, but is he for real??! Seriously? [Although I DID once refuse to accept a free drink just because I was a woman - "I'm perfectly capable of paying for a drink, thank you, my good man" - but that might have been because I'd already had too many free ones in the first place!]

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

  2. Mr. Arkadin says:

First: Thanks to whoever was with @snackcar & wrote the wonderful reporT. Just great!

And yes Arkadina, Hollander was one of (if the not THE) greatest difference makers ever! THE DANCE! The dance alone made the segment priceless! It’s bad enough to dance that poorly. But imagine having such a lack of self-awareness as to allow yourself to be filmed like that! I guess one follows the other.
Well, it made it great for us! :D

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

The Dance. Oh god yes, The Dance. Pure comedy gold, although I did wonder if the whole thing was an April Fools segment at one point…

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

  3. SW says:

Where do they find these people? Seriously. Do they send in applications?!?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

  4. GabbyD says:

i started a discussion on hulu about the lawyer. quite the spirited response! apparently, “ladies night” is a festering issue in the gender wars! :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

I had a feeling Stephen would be laughing at his desk while that segment aired. :)

The Piers Gibbon interview was my favorite part of the episode. First off, Gibbon’s accent is fantastic – it seemed to make the interview go all the more smoothly (it helped that he also seemed like a genuinely nice person). And secondly, I just loved the conversation. I only wish I had National Geographic so I could watch the special.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1
