I absolutely love this cover picture! The Lifeline blog at ‘The USA Today’ reports that Stephen Colbert will be on the cover of “Outside” magazine, available on newsstands on April 12th. The magazine also features an interview where he discusses his 2005 ill-fated trip to Bermuda, and why he’s participating in that same race this year. Here’s a quote from the article:
Though I grew up in a sailing community—Charleston, South Carolina—I am not a sailor. I wasn’t allowed to sail because I’m not waterproof. I have no eardrum in my right ear. As a child, I imagined that if the boat capsized, my skull would fill with water and down I’d go, bow first.
And how awesome is this cover picture! So adorkable!

I’ll definitely be on the lookout for this issue. I love this quote – it’s so evocative, gives you a glimpse into what’s special about the experience: “What endures is what I can’t rightly describe: Looking up at night to see the masts unmoving in your eyes but the stars dancing in synchronized figure eights… [...] Eight friends together in a 45-foot world and alone at the center of a referenceless horizon.”

That quote gave me goosebumps. The man is nothing if not eloquent.

Well, that’s an amazing magazine cover. I can’t wait to buy it. I only wish Tuesday wasn’t a week away.

That is certainly a wonderful, beautiful quote. And did you notice that there’s a hyptertext link to pictures of Stephen? It’s a very nice gallery of 23 pictures… but they save the best for last. I had an instant good feeling from looking at picture 23. I won’t say anything more.
I am so glad that Stephen gets to have that experience out there on the ocean, without the noise and clutter of people wanting his picture, or some of his time, or a personal appearance… I am so glad that he will have the opportunity to just be himself, and not anyone’s hero for a few days… or at least a few moments. He puts so much joy out there into the world, it’s only fair that the sky bends down occasionally while he’s out on that expansive ocean and puts some of that good feeling back into him.

Just read the article while waiting in the doctor’s office this evening. While he saved the best for last (see wren’s post), I got a kick out of the “footnotes.” I’m too decent to walk out of the office with the magazine, though…. not that it didn’t occur to me!
