Episode 7039 (3/23/2011) – Nathan Myhrvold

Colbert Report Episode Guide 150pxEPISODE NUMBER: 7039 (March 23, 2011)
GUESTS: Nathan Myhrvold
SEGMENTS: Top News Stories All at Once, Stephen Colbert’s Raging Art-On – Art 3, The Word – Over-Reactor
VIDEOS: Wednesday, March 23, 2011

While I love the character of “Stephen”, I find it even more joy inducing when the real Stephen just glows at the beginning of the show when the crowd starts chanting his name. It reminds me that making us happy brings him joy as well. Plus we get to see that gorgeous smile before “Stephen” starts nailing stuff.

So glad that Stephen’s covering all the news at once – I don’t have time for all that “one story at a time nonsense”. Or, you know, facts. Yay for the red 20-sided die! I think it’s courageous of Stephen to have the exclusive coverage of his art auction. I think it’s a news story that the mainstream media has buried for far too long. Also, I’m ticked that not one person there posted any video after it happened so we could watch it – we had to hear lame second hand reports. Well, we finally got to see the auction kiddos! And “I’m sorry about that” was I think the best improved line of this entire series of segments. Also? Next on my agenda for this morning, getting Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice (uncensored)” on my Colbert Mix on my iPhone. Watching Stephen jamming with Simon de Pury, and watching Stephen’s eyes get squinty from the huge smile on his face, was a true thing of beauty and one of those moments that reminds me why I am such an ardent fan of Stephen Colbert.

Okay, that Redcross to Reactors autcorrect is so very, very wrong. But I love that the text immediately before that one was at 12:15a. It’s the attention to detail that takes things up a notch on this show. The writer who came up with WORD’s line “Or Put Down A Coaster” deserves a cookie. And my favorite parts of tonight’s interview with Nathan Myhrvold were the moments where Stephen would think of a line and snerk a smidge to himself before he shared the line.

Basically, tonight boiled down to Stephen’s smile for me.

Instead of a screencap for today’s episode, is it okay if we just watch Simon and Stephen get their groove on? Because that moment made me smile. What did you like about tonight’s show? Leave it in the comments!

Was the bit about Fallon for real? Because the look on Stephen’s face as he said it made me think Jimmy might not be aware he had to match the donation. :)

    • lockhart43 says:

I think it was for real. I feel like Stephen had just found out about it a little while before the show. He was also pointing to someone right before the announcement – who knows? Maybe Jimmy had stopped by to tell him himself. One can only hope. ;)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +3

  2. lockhart43 says:

I really loved this entire episode, but Stephen being so happy after announcing Jimmy Fallon would be matching the $26,000 that he literally jumped for joy was one of the greatest things I have ever seen.

    Difference makers: Thumb up +10

    • Ann G says:

I loved that leap for joy! I think you might be right, that he had just found out about Jimmy Fallon matching that donation shortly before the taping. I seriously love Jimmy Fallon right now.

My second favorite moment of the show was the expression on Stephen’s face when he and “Phil” were getting their groove on to Snoop(y) Dogg. That huge smile was so great to see!

Great episode all around. The interview was fascinating but not nearly long enough. “You made ice cream that tastes like ice cream!” Hahaha…

Oooh — I’ll take a set of “Modernist Cuisine”, please!

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Epic. Epic. Epic. Epic. Epic. Epic. EPIC EPISODE. Every single second of this was FANTASTIC. “While I love the character of “Stephen”, I find it even more joy inducing when the real Stephen just glows at the beginning of the show when the crowd starts chanting his name. It reminds me that making us happy brings him joy as well. Plus we get to see that gorgeous smile before “Stephen” starts nailing stuff.” I couldn’t agree more, DB. “Stephen’s Art-On” is officially my favourite on-location segment and my favourite part of this episode. Simon de Pury and Stephen totally rockin’ it out to “Snoopy Dogg” along with Stephen’s happy-gasmic expression had me rockin’ back and forth with laughter and clappin’/groovin’ with them. He was full of crazy energy and excitement before and during the auction and he looked so happy about the outcome for his portrait. I had a major squee moment when he literally jumped up and down with joy after the segment. That made me really happy! :) And Jimmy Fallon matching the DonorsChoose.org donation? My respect for him just went up a few more notches. So many kids and art projects are going to benefit so much from Stephen and Jimmy’s act of kindness. The Word was spot-on as usual. I’d actually read an article about Nathan Myrvold, his accomplishments and this new book of his some time ago, so I was excited when I realized that he would be on the show. The book sounds really interesting and helpful on using scientific method to make better cooking, but a bit on the expensive side for me. Still, if I have enough money someday and I decide that I want to challenge my cooking skills, I may consider that purchase. Stephen’s last expression at the end of the interview was another squee/LOL moment. This episode is DEFINITELY a keeper. :)

Did anyone else pause it to read his other text messages? “I’d live to hear your voice” lol.

  6. Mr. Arkadin says:

This was a fantastic show. Loved every minute of it!
When Stephen got Simon de Pury to “Bust a move” he got that look on his face that reminds me of a toddler. So proud of themselves that they can’t contain their glee. I just laughed and laughed. Great!
And “The Word” was again awesome. Going after the bury-their-heads-in-the-sand crowd was so just and dead-on. It really is a marvel at how consistently good that segment is after all these years.
Also, it’s about time someone went after those insidious windmills! Don Quixote can’t do it all by himself!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +4

  7. SW says:

Really?!?! What else did it say?!? What else?!? I just watched the episode (which was brilliant!) because last night I was suffering too much from sleep deprivation. Oh, I don’t have time to go back and pause it… What else did it say??? Do you think they were funny/fake messages planted there on purpose? (Oh, probably.) Very juicy (and so true… that voice…).
My favorite line from the show (among about 20 other favorite lines from the show) was:
    IT HAPPENED!!!!! IT HAPPENED!!!!
I am now thinking of that text message, Colbaby, and wondering in what other contexts he may have used that phrase.
And that leap for joy? Oh, I could watch that leap over and over… Why did the darned commercial have to kick in?
And I loved how much genuine fun he had with his guest.
You know Stephen, I am a vegetarian, but I’d be your pastrami any day.
    What a great episode!
    What joy!
I just forgot about how upset I was about whatever it was I was upset about.
    Thanks, Stephen.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +4

    • SW says:

That was supposed to be a reply to Colbaby’s post about the text messages, by the way — but it landed underneath you, Mr. Arkadin! However, while I’m at it, like yourself, I loved “The Word,” too. I think I’m going to watch it again.

“You know Stephen, I am a vegetarian, but I’d be your pastrami any day.”
SW! Behave! This is a family website!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

      • SW says:

Hey, I didn’t say he’d be my pastrami… It was the other way around!
Oh, I can’t help it, Mr. Arkadin. It was the way that pastrami was clearly melting in his mouth and he was just mmmm-ing and looking as if that pastrami was the most delicious thing in the world. Can a girl help it if she wants to be that delicious? To Stephen?
And unlike his pastrami, I don’t take 72 hours to finish.
Eh-hem, oh, yes, family website. Oops.

        Difference makers: Thumb up +6

        • Mr. Arkadin says:

“And unlike his pastrami, I don’t take 72 hours to finish.”

          You’re incorrigible! I give up!

          HaHa!

        • Galadriel says:

This is why I keep coming back: I love the fans almost as much as I love the show. A smarter, funnier, more talented bunch of fans would be hard to find, I’d wager!

          Laughing out loud…

        • Karenatasha says:

Well, in your defense, SW, unless Stephen releases a porn video, I don’t think we’ll see that expression on his face too often! He looked pretty darn happy eating that food.

On a more serious note, let me join those praising The Word. Another spectacular sequence.

What more could a member of the Nation want? Stephen dancing, Stephen being verbally brilliant, Stephen looking wrapped in pleasure.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +3

  8. SW says:

Yes, to the dancing! Yes, to brilliance! Yes, to pleasure! You are exactly right, Karenatasha. That pretty much sums it up. And as to the video you suggested he release… ummmm, okay, Yes (!) to that too.
Can I help it if I find intelligence stimulating?

And I know it’s a bit early to talk about last night’s episode (Thursday, 3/24/11), but wasn’t that sweet the way he thanked his new “BFF for 6 months” once again for his outstanding generosity?!? And it goes without saying (but I’m saying it), that it was so wonderful to see him interview such a smart, compassionate woman and to hear them talk about how women’s issues are everyone’s issues. And I loved how she hit the tennis ball right back over the net at him, metaphorically speaking. I think he liked that. I know I did.

(But seriously, any word on that video?…)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

  9. SW says:

Hmmm. I tried to post a response, and it didn’t work. I know DB is busily repairing the site (which is very much appreciated), so maybe there was a glitch. I will try to remember my post. I think this was it. Of course, it loses something the second time around, but here goes. Hopefully I will not end up with 2 nearly identical posts:

    In response to Karenatasha…

Yes, to dancing! Yes, to brilliance! Yes, to pleasure! You’re right, Karenatasha, that about sums it up.
And if you happen to hear anything about that “video” you mentioned, please let me know. Not that I would ever… I mean…. Oh, well. Yes, to that too!

And I realize it’s a little early to talk about last night’s show, but wasn’t it wonderful the way Stephen thanked his new “BFF for 6 months” once again for his incredible generosity? My husband is a music teacher, and he’s been going to district meetings all week to stand up against all the cuts that are being made. Two art teachers are in danger of losing their positions. So, when I heard about the auction, and Jimmy Fallon’s subsequent matching contribution for Donor’s Choose, I was so happy! (Thank you, Stephen, for setting this in motion and for caring deeply about so many things that might otherwise be overlooked. You are a mensch!)

Now, as to that “video,” if you hear anything…

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

    • Karenatasha says:

Gee, I just make one little comment! That’s how bad rumors start! NO video. NO.

      Down girl! ;-)

And totally agreed about everything relating to Fallon and Donors Choose. It was great, and I think Stephen seemed pleased and touched.

      Oh, boy–ReCaptcha has a…horseshoe symbol!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1
