Episode 7027 (2/23/2011) – Stephanie Coontz

Colbert Report Episode Guide 150pxEPISODE NUMBER: 7027 (February 23, 2011)
GUESTS: Stephanie Coontz
SEGMENTS: USA Today Infographic Sells Out, Bust In Show, Nailed ‘Em
VIDEOS: Wednesday, February 23, 2011

Since I’m a day behind on ep guides, I’ll make this short and sweet. Again, a lovely show. I find it funny that Stephen is so offended by the The USA Today graphic about men liking a sharp dressed man, seeing as how we do a weekly Fangirl Suit Report about his wardrobe. The capital building diorama populated by Peeps was a quick but hysterical site gag. Stephen’s “Union Goon” accent was just another adorkable example of his way with accents. Wasn’t too crazy about the Nailed ‘Em segment tonight, but I really enjoyed the elegance and wisdom that was Stephanie Coontz.

What did all of you like about the episode tonight?

Oh, ‘Union Goon’ had me in stitches, but I was so sure it would be a kitten feeding that hungry, hungry wood chipper. I may have also giggled/n’awwwed an exorbitant amount when Stephen brought the puppy out again >.>

(Did I imagine it or was he desperately trying to calm the poor doggy down once the fur cannon fired? :3 adorable )

I thought the entire week was wonderful, with Stephen doing what he does absolutely best, which is lampooning people with power and/or authority who either abuse it or don’t know what to do with it.
And I loved Stephanie Coontz too — You said it very well: elegance and wisdom. I want to get her book. And I love that the Colbert Report makes me want to go out and buy books. (Barnes & Noble seems happy with it too…)

I like that the show makes me want to do that, too :D. TDS is quite good at that as well. Keeps the place I work in business, so hey!

Haha, I thought the exact same thing!

The “union goons” bit was easily the most entertaining part of the show-I loved the way he pointed out the absolute stupidity of such a plan. And the bit with the puppy and the wood chipper-hearing the crowd’s reaction throughout was about as funny as what Stephen was doing! Plus, any excuse to see Stephen holding a puppy again-awwwwwwwwwww :).

Also liked the interview with Coontz, too. Not only will I have to read her book sometime, but it would probably do me well to check out the original “The Feminine Mystique” as well. Always fascinating to learn about that particular time period and the way women back then responded to it.

“This is brilliant, folks. We know that government workers are greedy goons, because we keep saying that they are. But since they refuse to live up to our stereotypes, we must do it for them. And then, the American people will despise us, by which I mean them.”

Seriously. Stephen and the writers are geniuses. I love this show so much.

Loved the interview, and loved the sign-off. And I know it goes without saying that the picture you included for this recap is adorable, but I’m still saying it: sweet baby Jesus, that picture is so adorable!!

Apart from the pooch [of course!] and when its little head popped up again, and a few fun bits in the interview, I wasn’t that bothered about last night’s show. The infographic segment, Nailed ‘Em and the baseball cap didn’t do it for me and for some reason it seemed quite choppily edited. Hmmm. Still, you can’t win ‘em all, or maybe I just wasn’t in the mood. Normal service will soon be resumed, I’m sure…. …oooh, three hours until the Huckabee episode is on!

I thought this was a really good episode. DEFINITELY a download keeper. The only thing that I was a little put-off with was the end of the Nailed ‘Em segment (was a major GOL (gasp-out-loud) moment for me), but the Stephanie Coontz interview was superb. I love how Stephen has had an eye for bringing on well-informed, intelligent, awesome women on his program lately (the other one being Amanpour). And even though I’m not a dog person, if there were ever any rare moments when I’d like to be a dog, one of those would have been that part with the little pooch at the end of the “Greedy Goon” bit…if only to get a kiss from Stephen…

By the way…just a random question: being a newbie here, do you have to be a super Stephen fan, or is it for anyone who loves Stephen no matter where you lie on the fangirl/guy spectrum? I know there are some people here who have been following the show longer than I have and are more vocally excited about Stephen antics. For me, I’m more reserved when it comes to my responses, but it’s because my fangirlness is manifested in a more “physical” sense: when my emotions come out through my body language, which is of course impossible to see online. But I don’t think that makes me love Stephen any less than any other Zoner here, does it? Just wondering.

If you do not read from I Am America and So Can You each night before bed, if you do not catch each and every recycled Strangers with Candy joke used on the show, if you do not know the significance and story behind each and every item on the shelves of Stephen’s studio, and if you do not levitate with joy when noticing Stephen’s hair is particularly soft and fluffy on a given night, then your presence here is unneeded and unwanted. Good day, madam. I SAID GOOD DAY.

Kidding of course. :P If you like talking about the show, then you’ll fit in just fine. Welcome to the insanity.

I’ve been blogging here for close to five years. I didn’t start watching the ‘Colbert Report’ until about May 2006, after the show had been on the air over six months.

I am a huge fan, quite passionate, but I don’t have nearly the background as many of our readers, who have been a fan since the ‘Daily Show’ days, or who have been to multiple live tapings and events, or who remember him from ‘Exit 57′ and ‘Strangers With Candy’ 10 years ago.

I hope that doesn’t make me any less of a fan. And I don’t think of you as any less of a fan. As a matter of fact, this exact issue is addressed in our comment policy:

        10) Thou shall not covet other fandom member’s experiences

No one has “better” fan experiences than someone else. A fan who has just started watching the show last month is not any less of a fan than someone who has been watching ‘The Daily Show’ since 2000, or someone who has flown across the country, or across borders, to see a live show. Heck, DB founded this fan site and has only been to one taping of the ‘Colbert Report’!

It’s not how much money you have to fly, but how much passion you have in your heart that matters. And here, you are welcome to let your fandom flag fly!

Well said! I myself just started coming here late last year, and have been watching the shows since 2008, and catching up on everything I missed before then. I’ve never understood how length of fandom automatically makes one a “better” fan-you can’t always help when you get into something, and may not always be able to afford to do all the stuff some fans seem to get to do, or whatever-it seems strange to me when people hold stuff like that against “newer” fans.

Anywho, hello, Anais, welcome to the fandom! Hope you enjoy yourself here :).

My favorite moment of this show was the “wood-chipped” dog. I happened to watch this show with my mom & when that dog’s head pop over the desk, my mom laughed so hard I thought she was going to strangle to death!
    My mom. It-getter. :D
