Colbert Report Episode Guide 150pxEPISODE NUMBER: 7022 (February 15, 2011)
GUESTS: Christiane Amanpour, David Albright
SEGMENTS: Italian Bunga-Bunga Parties & Egyptian Democracy, Mr. Smith Goes to the State Legislature, Then Later Possibly Washington – Ron Gould
VIDEOS: Tuesday, February 15, 2011

When I grow up, I want to be Christiane Amanpour. She’s always so proper, so refined. And she’s smart to boot. I’m so proud of Stephen for getting through the entire line at the end of the “Mr. Smith Goes to the State Legislature” with just barely a smile at the end. On occasion, Stephen reports on something so insane (“Crazies F#!king Thing I’ve Ever Heard”) or assinine (“Alpha Dog of the Week”) that he barely makes it through the segment due to the insanity of the deed reported. This is most definitely one of those times. Yay for a Sweetness cameo! Also, bringing back Christiane Amanpour for the interview was a little slice of brilliance.

Stephen Colbert and Sweetness

  • Yes, democracy is spreading faster than crabs at a public pool.
  • Seventeen, of course, legally underage. Or as they say in Italy, al dente.
  • Berlusconi has developed what many are calling the reverse Burqa. It covers only her eyes and remember, young ladies, when you’re being bunga-bunged by Berlusconi, it really is a blessing.
  • We can blow up a bridge again. A bridge! If we want to blow up a bridge in Afghanistan, we have to build it first.
  • We used to have to steep our revolutions in the crock pot of liberty, and then freedom would just fall off the bone. This is microwave revolution.
  • Remember, just 2 years before Obama announced his candidacy, he was a state senator. Now clearly state legislatures are the presidential minor leagues, in that Wednesdays are also quarter beer night.
  • Because in Arizona, it should not be a crime to forget to tell the police you’re armed. Though it is still a crime if you forget to tell the police you’re a Mexican.
  • Three hole punch, bottle opener, and now weapon? Is there anything you can’t do?
  • So, just to recap: [AZ state senator Ron] Gould’s bill would make it legal for a person who does not know if they have a gun to go into the sheriff’s office, tell them you don’t have a gun, then sue the department, then carjack the sheriff’s cruiser and drive down the main street firing out of the roof as long as that person does not understand that bullets can hurt people.
  • I think ghost attack sounds spookier.

I think David Albright is Stephen’s eyebrow twin :). Did you see that? I know I should have more to say about a show with so much content, but I’m having a mushy-brained week, I think….

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

I loved the interview with Christiane Amanpour, and how Stephen brought her back to ask questions at the end. Those two have great chemistry. Bring her back soon!

The comment he made in the intro in relation to the topic of the interview made me giggle right off the bat, and that’s always a good sign of things to come :D.

Hooooooooooooly crap, that story about the proposed gun law in Arizona…I absolutely loved the way Stephen covered it, and found the humor and absurdity in it, because seriously, that is a truly terrifying idea. I honestly don’t even begin to understand how someone can possibly come up with an idea as utterly STUPID as that one. Especially given what just happened in that state over a month ago. How incredibly insensitive. I hope it fails to go forward, I really do. I also loved Stephen’s take on the democracy issue as well, particularly the part about fighting a country vs. fighting some indefinable enemy, and our country’s constant hypocrisy surrounding democracy-building as well.

And the interview was fantastic, too-fascinating topic to discuss, so strange to think that could be the next means of fighting in war, and I love the way Christiane (whom I fully agree with everyone’s sentiments on-I really admire and respect her, she’s awesome) was brought back-watching Stephen mouthing along with her words was hilariously adorable. It also seemed to me that during the interview as well as the gun segment that he was slipping out of character quite a bit, which I think made it even more entertaining.

Very good show last night-lots of great discussion and good topic material along with the humor.

Christiane Amanpour is fantastic. I immensely enjoyed that interview. And a big high-five to her for going along with the Albright interview! Watching Stephen trying to mouth the words that Amanpour was saying sort of made him look like a fish, which made me laugh really hard.

The “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” segment was….WOW. Just wow. I applaud Stephen and the writers for putting that together, and for being completely successful in making me laugh at something that rather upset me. The line “Because in Arizona, it should not be a crime to forget to tell the police you’re armed. Though it is still a crime if you forget to tell the police you’re a Mexican.” was brilliant.

Does it throw anyone else off when Stephen says something other than, “That’s it for the Report everybody, goodnight” at the end of the show? Always catches me off-guard. Maybe Stephen’s trying to keep us on our toes, lol.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1
