Episode 7014 (1/25/2011) – Amy Chua

Colbert Report Episode Guide 150pxEPISODE NUMBER: 7014 (January 25, 2011)
GUESTS: Amy Chua
SEGMENTS: The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother Controversy, ThreatDown – Radical Muslim Snacks, Flying Robot Drones & Coked Up Vacuums, Nazi-ometer
VIDEOS: Tuesday, January 25, 2011

I’m glad that Stephen explained the controversy behind Amy Chua’s book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother. I’d seen some headlines but hadn’t actually read anything about the book before the show other than the snippets that Karenatasha blogged about earlier this week. The segment about halal food amused me, as I have known multiple people who won’t eat at one of the burger joints downtown because they have fake bacon on their bacon burgers and their female staff all wear the hijab. Too bad for them – they make the best fries in downtown. Oh well, more for me! I also laughed heartily at Stephen’s “clarification” of his feelings about Sarah Palin.

What did all of you enjoy about the show tonight? Leave it in the comments!

Stephen Colbert and author of Tiger Mother

  • Whose side are you on, International Date Line?!
  • By the way kids, it is a good read, and your book report is due in an hour or I’m going to sell you to the gypsies.
  • And if they get an “F”, they become part of the “Bodies” exhibit.
  • Ladies and gentlemen … sex. Now that I’ve got your attention … death.
  • That’s right. A sandwich of death. And for once, I’m not talking about Arby’s.
  • Not choices! Folks, we are dangerously close to being served Filet Al Fish by Imam McCheese. Vigilance!
  • Even if they don’t enslave us, they will crush us at Jenga. Vigilance!
  • We should have known – how do you think Roombas clean your house for 10 hours? They’re tweaking! They’re on the high speed chicken feed!
  • For the record, I believe Sarah Palin is a true statesman whose experience as a failed vice presidential candidate, half-term governor, and eight episode reality show star has fully prepared her to take control of our nuclear arsenal.
  • Oh, and here’s my defamation lawsuit by Hanna Barbara. I’ll just add that to the pile.
  • Bringing up Der Rear, you have Colonel Klink, and he gets 1/2 a Hitler. But 2 Emmys!

My favorite bit was the Palin clarification. Thanks for clearing that one up, Stephen. ;) And Fox News has to be kicking themselves for not thinking of the nazi-ometer first. Jon did a segment just the night before about their penchent for nazi name calling.

    VIGILANCE!

    Difference makers: Thumb up +5

  2. Angela says:

Hehehehehe, ah, there are few things out there that make me quite as happy as Stephen taking on Sarah Palin. Seriously. I love the way he handled that. So completely deadpan. And the Nazi meter? Wonderful. Between that and the aforementioned bit Jon did on his show last night, their frustration with this issue is so apparent that I’m amazed they haven’t just finally yelled point blank at the camera, “SHUT UP ABOUT NAZIS ALREADY, EVERYONE!” (a sentiment with which I would fully agree).

The story about the “radical Muslim” stuff-Stephen’s take on it was hilarious, but geez, the actual story itself made my head hurt. Some people’s paranoia and ignorance truly knows no bounds, it never ceases to amaze me.

Great interview with Chua, too. Now that we’ve moved aside some of the controversy and hyperbole about her book, it was a rather interesting interview, a few things said in there I actually couldn’t really disagree with. I still think some of her methods were/are incredibly extreme and strict, but she’s free to parent her own way, as is everyone else. The college dig was a cute little thing in the introduction for the interview, and I’m glad that she was able to have a bit of a good back and forth with Stephen.

Ah ha! So now we know why the hair looks different! :) Oh, and that was cute how he tried to imitate the “Bodies” guy.

The segment on halal foods certainly delivered. Lots of ignorant people saying ignorant things.

In any case, Paula Deen has been indoctrinating midwesterners for decades. Though I must openly admit to being an ardent follower of the Church of Alton Brown, as well, since we’re talking about food-as-religious-construction.

Also, I believe sharia law is technically only applicable to Muslims. Doesn’t that kind of negate any effect of whether any non-Muslim eats halal food?

I love Alton Brown too. I learned a lot from watching him.

Count me in as a member of the Church of Alton Brown – the reception after the service is always so delicious! :)

Oh Aaron, don’t get bogged down with facts. Pat Robertson is trying to brainwash his minions and he doesn’t need those pesky facts getting in the way. :-D

I finally watched this episode tonight – I was so exhausted from class yesterday that I fell asleep at 10:30 and missed both TDS and TCR. And then because missing both episodes threw off my schedule, I actually forgot what day it was when I woke up this morning. That just goes to show you how much both shows are a part of my daily life. :)

The Nazi-ometer segment was so great! I loved Stephen’s response to last week’s comments that he, er, I mean Mika’s eyes, made about Sarah Palin. And I always love a good ThreatDown – Stephen saying Roombas are on the “high speed chicken feed” really cracked me up! The line “ladies and gentlemen…sex” was hilarious, too. Definitely reminded me of IAAASCY.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  6. Josh says:

First up, and I hope nobody takes this out of context… Hitler is number one!

    Best line of the show.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2
