EPISODE NUMBER: 7013 (January 24, 2011)
GUESTS: Charlie Rose
SEGMENTS: Stephen Rejects Keith Olbermann’s Power, The Word – Coverage of Denial, Art Stephen Up Challenge – Banksy
VIDEOS: Monday, January 24, 2011
The firing of Keith Olbermann has sent waves of disbelief in, okay who are we kidding, no one. But Olbermann will be missed by many. At least we have the solace of having Keith Olbermugg to give us comfort. And the way Stephen was bound and determined to get the “Am I canceled?” line out without a character break was both heroic and adorkable. Stephen being Banksy explains his effortless and inspiring portraits of Snoopy. Not sure what made Stephen break down into that beautiful smile right after the art segment, but thank you to whichever ‘Colbert Report’ editor left it in.
If you’ve never seen it, you can watch the Charlie Rose interview with Stephen Colbert on CharlieRose.com. I love interviews where Stephen adopts the mannerisms of the journalist he’s interviewing. I’ve only seen him do it a few times – Stone Phillips comes to mind, as does Martin Short (as Glick). Stephen’s soft-spoken Rose-ish demeanor during the interview was amusing as well as respectful.
Most excellent show all around – what did you all think? Leave it in the comments!
- It’s one part bourbon … and it really helps.
- It’s funny ’cause it’s not true.
- In punditry, as in the Highlander, there can be only one.
- KEITH OLBERMAN, YOUR AUDIENCE AND YOUR VOCABULARY BE MINE!
- My body’s rejecting Keith like a pompous kidney. Jimmy, quick, more wind, more lightning.
- Am I canceled?
- It’s a job killer – all those healthy people are going to put graverobbers out of business.
- This is a return to the Republican values that I love – they don’t let reality push them around. They just pretend the world is what they say it is. [No Matter What The Birth Certificate Said]
- [Stephen Got "Majority" On Math Exam]
- That auction convinced me that Banksy equals bank, see?
- You’re probably wondering, how did Stephen make that happen? Easy. I’m Banksy.
- What can I say, I was in college and I needed the beer money. Don’t judge me.
- Welcome to the Mantletop Honor Zone 5400. Home of the Whopper.
- Let’s just say that this is a clever take on … Space Fights.
- Are you really that intrigued with them, or are you faking an interviewgasm.
- Did PBS broadcast those? Because that would be great for the pledge drive.
- That’s a very gentile place to throw down.

Fluffy, unplasticky hair + pretty smiles + an “Oh, hi!” bookshelf sign-off = extra warm fuzzy feelings for my favorite show :).

I’d love to see Stephen at “Charlie Rose” a second time. I love his interviews, they are so private because of the studio and the guests are usually more open.

That was an all around awesome episode! Loved the Keith Olbermug, the superb WORD and the utterly hilarious interview. I agree, there were lots of gorgeous smiles and his hair looked absolutely magnificent… I would like to see it like that more often :)
Great beginning of the week. Yay, keep it up!

Colbert’s take on the Olbermann departure was interesting, because it was a great capsule/consensus look at everyone’s reaction to the commentator: very talented, but also a bit angry and misguided, and not always compatible. Not very many pundits would want to “absorb” those powers (and their consequences), but it certainly won’t stop them from trying.
Also, even before the quickening sequence started, the audience knew it was coming… and I could hear the laughter sort of spill out a bit (which was great, because I felt the same way).

Wonderful show to start the week! I smiled the entire time! Love it when that happens.

Great episode – all of the segments were terrific, and getting Keith Olbermug and Bill O’Reilly’s microwave to fight it out at the end was sheer genius! I kind of wish the interview went on for longer, but oh well, you can’t have everything! :) It was fun seeing Stephen take on a softer persona!

The whole clock gobbling moment where Stephen’s trying to regroup after rejecting Olbermann’s powers had me in stitches. It’s amazing how someone can be so funny doing essentially nothing.

Re: “That’s a very gentile place to throw down…” (at the theater, where he pushed a patron)
I think it was “genteel” —
I think a gentile place to throw down would be, um, Nieman Marcus? A polo match?
I loved the episode too! The Charlie Rose interview was great! As a matter of fact, I’d be happy to see him with the lights out more often…
Oh, were we talking about the show?…

*Snickers, gives thumbs up* :D.
So I take it you must’ve liked the first take on Stephen’s portrait that he showed the audience then as well ;)?
I noticed as they were going to break after the art segment that he was standing by the fireplace kinda chuckling, I dunno if it was at the picture he showed or what, but I found that an adorable random shot to see. And after the interview when he was all, “Charlie Rose, everybody!” to the audience and getting them to clap for the guy, that was lovely, too. He’s such a charming, classy guy, he really is.

Oh, thaaaaat portrait. Yes, I (ehem) enjoyed it. If only it wasn’t photo-shopped. Well, so much for ME being classy.
And I agree with you… I think it’s amazing that he must know he’s so loved and appreciated and yet be so down to earth and generous in spirit! Very charming and classy indeed.

Hehe. Eh, hey, I’m right there with you, so… I just get a kick out of the fact that that one was made by a guy :D. That’s awesome.
Yeah, he always seems a bit surprised by the reaction he tends to get from people, but it’s great that he appreciates it and lets others have the spotlight and gives credit where due, too. *Sigh* :).

I was writing so fast, I just caught my bad English. I meant to say, “… he must know he’s so loved and appreciated, and yet he is so down to earth and generous in spirit!”
I can’t very well leave bad English on a Stephen Colbert fan site. I think my fingers got all excited from our previous discussion about his faux nude portrait and just went wild…
See what happens?

The Olbermug! That was hilarious, particularly in the sign-off where Olbermug and O’Reillywave started to duke it out, so to speak. The little character breaks during the Olbermann segment were really adorable. Stephen’s hair looked wonderful last night, too.
The closing line of the Word was amazing. Just AMAZING. And I really loved Stephen’s homage to/interview with Charlie Rose. I especially adored the moment where Stephen asked Rose why he hesitates before he speaks in interviews, because Stephen does the same thing. It’s not necessarily before saying a seemingly simple word, but it’s the same mannerism, and something I’ve always admired about Stephen. :)

YES. Just a complete and total “BAM”. Seriously, I love this segment so much, but man, lately they’ve been so…so hard-hitting and full of some seriously stinging lines. Not that I’m complaining, mind, I love it, keep ‘em coming.
As for other things, oh, man, Stephen’s Keith and Charlie impressions had me cracking up so much. Eerily spot on, the guy can do an impression like nobody’s business, nice showcase of some of his acting skills there. And the interview with Charlie was full of such admiration on both ends, and they were both having fun with the whole setup, and there was a great back and forth…I love it when interviews are so relaxed and easy like that (and “interview-gasms”. Nice word :p).
And the powers and mug stuff was just insane. Completely and totally insane. In the best way possible :D. Great way to kick off the week of shows.

That’s exactly why I loved the Olbermug bit so much, for the complete and total ridiculousness of it.
“So what’d you do last night on the show, Stephen?”
“Oh, nothing much, just had a quickening to absorb all of Keith Olbermann’s powers and then had a mug with a tiny wig and glasses on it do battle with the microwave I stole from The O’Reilly Factor. Y’know, normal show stuff.” :P

Haha, exactly! And nobody in his family/friends are likely the least bit surprised or find that weird :p.
Yeah. The pure imagination involved in this show is fantastic.
I wonder if Keith saw that? Be interesting to know what he thought of it.

DB, I first want to thank you for introducing me to i-tunes multi-pass. I now get the episodes delivered to my computer intravenously, which makes my rabid fandom even easier to maintain.
I loved this epp tonight because it was kind of loose and free wheeling, and the way he impersonated Olbermann and Rose just tickled me.
It is kind of scary how fickle these t.v. execs are nowadays…I hope Stephen stays a Viacom darling for as long as possible, if only for the selfish reason of seeing the show every night!

I thought it was funny how both Jon and Stephen had on funny wigs tonight. Also, I loved the microwave ending. Is he really frying stuff in there?
What I really love the most about TCR are those little things. Like, the intro to the interview with the Charlie Rose graphic and the lighting, or lack thereof. It’s stuff like that that kicks up this show above all the others. It’s such a shame that it doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. I just love how after all this time, they don’t just phone it in, they still try hard to make every part of the show great.
I thought the best line of the show tonight was when Stephen said, “I don’t know what you’re talking about” when Charlie said it’s not about him, it’s about the guests. :-)

I absolutely loved this episode, particularly Stephen during his interview with Charlie Rose. I thought the whole set up and everything was perfect and enjoyable to watch! …and Stephen remains adorable (and amusing) as ever :)
@llama: I thought that was the best line of the show too XD
