Hey Zoners!! Weekends are great, but I do love Mondays, don’t you?? What can make me look forward to the dreaded Monday, and embrace it with excitement, you ask? A new episode of The Colbert Report!!! YAY! Last night’s show was awesome, as always, so let’s dive right in, shall we?

So, how were we edu-tained last night? Well, for starters, we learned that Cosmopolitan Magazine is now available to the women of Mongolia. Yes, THAT Cosmo! I have to admit, I am intrigued as to what the content will be like. I mean, I’m not so sure the Mongolian female population is quite ready for “75 Crazy-hot Sex Moves,” but then again, one never knows, right? I’m actually sort of imagining it as if the girls from Sex & the City were the guest editors for “Field & Stream.”

Next up was the always crowd-pleasing, The WØRD. Unrequited Gov was our topic last night and, I realize this is beyond redundant to say, but Stephen was right. President Obama needs to stop trying to get invited to the GOP’s lunch table in the Congressional Cafeteria, and remember the reasons people turned out in record numbers to elect him. After all, as Stephen said, “Mr. President, the Republicans just aren’t that into you.” But seriously, anyone know how we might be able to send Mr. Obama a clip last night’s WØRD, because I think he needs to hear/see it. Too bad he doesn’t have a iPhone, then he could just watch it on the app, The WØRD. **shakes fist** Blackberry!!!!

No educational show would be complete without a history lesson, and our Playful Professor was happy to oblige. OK, maybe not so much a history lesson as a damn funny segment, but go with me on this, alright? Last night we had part one of the 3rd installment of his Peabody-defying series, “Stephen Colbert Presents: Mysteries of the Ancient Unknown- King Tut’s Penis.” *phew* Do you know what I loved most about this segment? (Well, other than the dancing Col-brow, which is always a treat.) What I really loved most was the display of infinite patience world-renowned Egyptologist, Dr. David Silverman has for our fearless leader. The look on Dr. Silverman’s face and the tone of his voice was that which one addresses a precocious child. In fact, I wouldn’t have been surprised Silverman finally said, “Because I said so, that’s why!” But, to his credit, Dr. Silverman indulged our favorite investigative journalist and, for that, has earned major Colbertian points in my book. Well done, sir!

Finally, we had Stephen’s interview with Garry Trudeau. I must admit, that being a huge fan of Mr. Trudeau’s work, I was ecstatic that he was a guest on the Report. Some of you may remember that Stephen and Garry were on the same panel discussing humor and politics in 2004, when The Colbert Report was but perhaps a glint in Stephen’s eye. Did any of you Zoners realize that Trudeau had been drawing his Doonesbury comic strip for 40 years? I hadn’t. Time sure does fly when you’re making fun of politics, doesn’t it? I was also pleased to learn that Doonsebury was the first to feature an openly gay character. I always knew about Andy Lipincott, but had no idea he was the first. Boy, talk about a trail-blazer! The whole interview was really wonderful, especially since it seems that Colbert is a huge fan of the comic strip, and more so, Garry Trudeau himself. But just for the record, I think it is safe to assume that Mr. Trudeau is just as big a fan of Stephen’s as well. Who can blame him?

So, what was your favorite part of the show? Leave your comments kids!

  • Now that Mongolian women have Cosmo, they’ll know what body parts to feel insecure about – It’s the beard!
  • Enjoy Cosmo, Mongolia. Now we’re even for Ghengis Khan.
  • And we rich folks wouldn’t have our tax cuts if the President wasn’t willing to fight all the Democrats who want him to fight the Republicans.
  • To thank him, the Republicans gave Obama nothing. Zilch. Zero. Jack-squat ala’ mode. [Smothered in a "F**k you" sauce]
  • Isn’t it better to have loved and lost then to have fought and won?
  • So tonight, I am proud to proclaim 2010, the Year of King Tut’s Missing Penis!
  • I will travel any distance…As long as it’s not more than 12 blocks.
  • When King Tut’s mummy was discovered in 1922, the king’s “tut” was there, but, in 1968 when it was re-examined, the boy “thing” was missing.
  • Thirty-three hundred years ago. So, like, Mayflower.
  • Dr. let’s stop beating around the bush. Where’s the penis?
  • Oh, Dr. I have made a remarkable discovery. I do not care about this.
  • Trudeau: If you’re going to read it, you probably should have someone spot you.
  • So you scooped yourself. That’s not gay-code, by the way.
  • They looked like they were drawn by a palsied toddler.

I was also very impressed with the way Dr. Silverman responded to Colbert’s questions :D And I loved the dramatic light on Stephen as he introduced the King Tut’s missing penis segment~

And it’s always lovely seeing Colbert after what felt like a long weekend XD Yay!

  2. Gratefull says:

I thought both interviews were marvelous. Dr. Silverman seemed like a it-getter. Loved his line about taking Benjamin Franklin and putting him 3,300 years ago. Chances are it made Mr. C. smirk too.

Trudeau’s interview was sheer play! Oh, that it could have been longer. I think they both were having loads of fun. I do wish they would consider making some of their interviews longer so that Stephen Colbert could milk them even more. Loved the line about there being cheap comedy writers down in Honduras.

Wonder if Mr. Trudeau gave Mr. C any pointers on getting his Tek Jansen comic book novel published. LOL

    • LoriE says:

I agree. I sometimes wish he’d do longer interviews with some of his guests and put it up on the web like Jon does. THAT would be heaven!

Did anyone else think Garry Trudeau looks better now than he did in 2004 when he and Stephen were on that panel? What gives? Has he got some kind of Dorian Gray thing going on or what??

@friedthing…Haha! Yeah, the no-glasses interview was great! You are so cute!! Love ya!

    • bleu says:

I often wish the interviews would go for longer! Stephen + interesting/funny guest = pure awesomeness

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  3. friedthing says:

Since no one has properly freaked out about this yet, I just have to mention one thing from the King Tut interview: NO GLASSES!!

And the interview with Trudeau was so great!!! This is going to be such an awesome weeeeeeek!

    Difference makers: Thumb up +14

  4. jbirdNZ says:

I’m with you, friedthing! I love Egyptian history and couldn’t wait to see that segment, but definitely the icing on the Colbert cake was seeing those lovely naked eyes. WOW!

The Pursuit of the Pharaoh’s Phallus definitely had me giggling uncontrollably. Such a funny segment! I always like it when the person being interviewed plays straight man to “Stephen.” And the tape recording of the music cracked me up! I don’t know why Stephen went for the no-glasses look, but I liked it, so I won’t question it. ;)

The Garry Trudeau interview was wonderful. You could tell that Stephen was a fan of the comic, and the two seemed to have a great rapport with one another. That interview could have gone on and on, and I would have been more than happy to watch.

THIS. Every last word of this. As usual, the “Word” segment pretty much summed it all up so perfectly.

The Pursuit of the Pharaoh’s Phallus definitely had me giggling uncontrollably.

Same here :D. His utter and complete commitment to the investigation made it all the better. I also liked when he was sitting at his desk at the beginning of the segment, and that weird vocal thing started up again when he wasn’t expecting it and he got a bit startled :p. Dr. Silverman’s patient, straight man play along was brilliant, too, and yes, I also really liked the lack of glasses as well. Easily my favorite segment from the show.

I’ve read the Doonsbury comics off and on a bit, was nice to get some history and background of the comic strip. I can’t imagine doing that for 40 years, but hey, if it’s something you love, go for it. Definitely an interesting interview.

      • lockhart43 says:

His utter and complete commitment to the investigation made it all the better.

Oh absolutely, I loved that! It made it all the more funny for me. It was very Geraldo-esque; “Stephen” was on a definite mission. :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

    ‘Dancing Col-brow’ LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!

I found the tape recording of the music during the interview just HYSTERICAL haha great episode all round

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +3

  7. Mr. Arkadin says:

The whole show was great! And I loved every moment of it. But, I liked “The Word” most. Not only was “The Word” strong, I enjoyed the tension I though was of the audience, “Should we laugh at him making funny of Obama?” I like when TCR challenges their fans about Obama’s shortcomings.
Lori thanks for highlighting the three best lines. I think my favorite was: “Isn’t it better to have loved and lost then to have fought and won?” (Although [Smothered in a "F**k you" sauce.] was pretty great too.) ;P

  8. Katt says:

The thing that knocked my socks off last night other than King Tut’s lack of tuttilage and Stephen’s nakes eyes was his completely out of the blue reference to the 9 membered Aboriginal Tribe living in the middle of Australia’s Gibson Desert. Seriously!! What other show knows about such obscure things!! Not even our own Australian shows make reference to those sorts of things. Well done to the writers and research deparment on that one!!

  9. Caroline says:

I loved the Word segment in this episode – and, yes, someone should force Obama to watch it.

But I wasn’t so crazy about the King Tut segment. Stephen can dial his character up or down, and I think he dialed it too far up. The guy he interviewed was intelligent and pleasant, so having Stephen’s character be so rude wasn’t that funny, after a while (in part 1 or 2 of this segment). I mean, that character works better when the interviewee is pompous, ignorant or otherwise deserves to be taken down a notch.

Does any one else agree with me? Or am I just not an “it-getter”?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

    • lockhart43 says:

Don’t worry Caroline, you’re still an it-getter! :) For me personally, I love when the person interviewed plays straight-man to “Stephen” and gives earnest, straightforward answers to Stephen’s ridiculous questions, and also makes stone-faced witty responses to his statements (like in Pt. 2 of the segment when Dr. Silverman tells Stephen that if he looks in the box and finds that King Tut’s penis is, in fact, not there, that Stephen will be the very first person he calls, lol. Sometimes I actually like those interviews better than the ones where the guest gets nailed because I so enjoy when the guest willingly plays along.
We won’t kick you out of our sandbox just because you didn’t like the interview, I promise :). And I loved the Word, too! The last line was the perfect closer, and [Smothered in a "F**k you" sauce] made me laugh so, so hard.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +3

  10. LoriE says:

@Bleu… Dancing Col-brows…♫♪ These are a few of my favorite things ♫♪ *wink*

The WØRD is always my favorite segment, guys. Hands down (until another fave is aired, of course…you understand). I wish Pres. Obama could’ve seen it Monday night, for sure. It was as honest and true a statement that could’ve been made as to the state of our government. I’m still holding out hope that he’ll come to his senses and ask Stephen how to fix America. Lord knows Colbert & Co probably could. I have to say, Mr. Arkadin & Lockhart43, those were indeed some of my favorite lines as well. Thanks!

@Caroline…No worries. Like Lockhart43 said, you don’t have to like EVERYTHING that was on TCR to be an it-getter. In fact, difference is the spice of life, and we it-getters are most definitely spicy, if nothing else. :D
