EPISODE NUMBER: 6145 (November 18, 2010)
GUESTS: Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta
SEGMENTS:Joseph Gobbles, Tip of the Hat, Wag of the Finger
VIDEOS: Thursday, November 18, 2010
The Joseph Gobbles story arc was hysterical! I immediately had the mental picture after the writers came up with that concept – “Okay, so we need a turkey.” Ha! And poor Jay getting shot. He shouldn’t have been doing the drugs anyway. The bird flipping Stephen off? Classic. The “flight risk” line kind made me think of my favorite line about turkeys ever – “As God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly”.
The first time I discovered Maru, I watched videos of that adorable Japanese cat for two hours straight. I’m a sucker for a cute cat video, I really am. So to see him on the show was a little slice of awesome. Also, the video of Maru and the giant box hasn’t been seen a million times. It’s been seen over 4 million times.
While Stephen jokes about being scandalous, one of the things that I really like about being a fan of Stephen is knowing he’d never pull a David Letterman, and I could trust him completely with my tub of “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter.” Okay, mostly completely. I found the interview with Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta to be really amazing. Guinta seemed to be such a genuine guy, someone who really cared about his fellow soldiers and about America. It was also great that Stephen completely dropped the character for the interview. Guinta really deserved some serious respect, and both Stephen and the audience gave it to him in abundance.
Well, folks, the show is on a break for a week. So let’s keep ourselves company in the comments! Also, don’t forget to vote in the poll – it’s always interesting to see if everyone else liked the same things I did!
- New Word: Thankstaking
- This year, the magic phrase is “There’s such a thing as too much wine.”
- Ladies and gentleman, the Colbert Report’s 2010 Thanksgiving Turkey, Joseph Gobbles. It is nice to dark meet you, Joseph. That’s turkey humor.
- Good luck, Joe, or as your people say, [gobblegobble].
- Sounds like someone is still on Friendster.
- Oh but a million people go on YouTube to watch Maru and the giant box? Evidently, if the Vicar of Christ wants attention on the Internet, he should do his sermons like this [in the box].
- Look at the comment section. It’s emptier than Jesus’s tomb. Could there be a more fitting place to type OMG?
- And instead of instituting papal bulls, institute papal memes, like LOLCatechisms.
- My sister Lulu thinks, he’s not going to do it this time, but I always do.
- Imagine the other team’s surprise when what seems to be an incomplete pass suddenly sprouts legs and sprints to the end zone.
- Multibillion dollar brands, over here. You know who has a squeaky clean image? Me. So huge corporations, hire me to plug your goods, take out a huge policy and two days later, I’ll disgrace your brand to the point where Mel Gibson is worried about *my* career. Then we split the payout 50/50, and I promise that each deal comes custom disgraced. For instance, I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter? You won’t believe what I’ll do with that Not Butter. And Izod? Make me your spokesmodel and I’ll leak a sex tape with an alligator. Just say the word, I already have the tape.
- Oh my God! The turkey I pardoned just shot Jay the Intern in a drug deal gone bad! This is a tragedy. Jay didn’t even get my coffee yet!
- Oh my God, a turkey flew away! There’s an armed and murderous turkey on the loose! Quick, I need to make the police a sketch. Hold on a second. Everyone be on the lookout for this man. He’s very dangerous and as we have just learned, is a flight risk.
- I’m sorry, they usually don’t clap for me that long.

Joseph Gobbles was simply epic. And what a great guest to have!

I will no longer be able to look at a turkey without crackin’ a smile.
The guest was simply amazing. Not only does he deserve his MoH but he will do such a brilliant job representing those who were not awarded the medals they so deserve.

I just knew it would end with him cutting into a cooked turkey. Did he rescind the pardon or was that one of Joseph’s friends? Perhaps Adolf…ok I can’t think of a turkey name that works with Hitler.
The interview was pretty powerful; what an inspiring guy.
And I gotta say, while I adore goofball Stephen, serious Stephen is pretty damn awesome.

I adored this entire episode. Both TDS (the return of the Glenn Beck glasses! Epic!) and TCR had incredibly strong shows last night – when midnight rolled around, all I could do was sigh and think about how awesome my favorite hour of the day just was. :)
Whoever came up with the idea to name the turkey Joseph Gobbles deserves a high-five. And a cookie. And a raise. That was brilliant! They got so many good jokes out of that. That whole segment was so goofy and so ridiculous that it’s already one of my favorite TCR moments. And I hope Jay the Intern is a fast healer! Last night really had the perfect balance of silly and serious.
I cried during the interview. There were a couple of times where Stephen looked a little choked up as well. What an incredibly humble and honorable person Staff Sgt. Giunta is. That interview was really amazing. It’s also a perfect example of how Stephen treats every single one of his guests with such a fantastic amount of respect.

I SO thought he was going to break into a WKRP thing there! Glad I wasn’t the only one who thought of that :D. And when he did the hand outline and made that into a turkey… That was just too cute.
The interview just proved how awesome two people can be. Sgt. Giunta for his bravery and his quick action and how humble he is about his actions, and Stephen for being so genuine and serious and humbled by his guest. It was incredibly cool to see both of them together, to see them both showing emotion, and their conversation was fascinating. It’s moments like this that explain why I love this show.

What a wonderful show–both the funny and the serious sides.
Everything having to do with Joseph Gobbles was inspired. (Flight risk–yay!)
And I thought I’d die laughing during the “I Can’t Believe it’s Not Butter line. (“Last Tango in Paris,” anyone?)
But the interview really won my heart. I knew Stephen would treat Sgt. Giunta with the respect and honor that he deserves, and his only attempt at humor was just right: joking about the fact that he himself wouldn’t be modest if he were in the same situation. (Though in truth, I bet he would.) I also love the fact that Stephen said right from the start that he wouldn’t mind if his guest received more applause than he did–and then he led the standing ovation. Sgt. Giunta’s bravery really took the spotlight and shone. A very special moment, in my opinion.

I voted for “Joseph Gobbles Shoots Jay the Intern” only because I’m absolutely positive that Jay was smiling in that three-second clip where he’s laying on the floor grasping his leg. I’m not even sure he was trying to hide it this time. Good episode.

Yes, I saw him smiling too!

Wonderful interview. It brought tears to my eyes. I am humbled by the service of our men and women who enlist. And I love seeing how appreciative Stephen is when he has the opportunity to interact and interview our soldiers. I like to think he’s an extension of all of us who don’t have the opportunity to do so. On a lighter note…
TURKEY ON THE LAM!!!

That interview was fantastic and heart-warming. I’d heard about Staff Sgt. Giunta on “60 Minutes” this weekend and was just riveted by his story. I could tell how honored Stephen felt to have him on the show. I’m always touched by how much Stephen admires our fighting men and women and how much he goes out of his way to make them feel honored.
