Episode 6140 (11/3/2010) – Doris Kearns Goodwin

Colbert Report Episode guideEPISODE NUMBER: 6140 (November 3, 2010)
GUESTS: Doris Kearns Goodwin
SEGMENTS: We Hardly Better Knew Ye, Stephen Colbert Gives You Props
VIDEOS: Wednesday, November 3, 2010

I know that there are a whole lot of people who are sad out there about the way that their election turned out. It could be worse, though – you could live in Texas and have Rick Perry as your governor. *shudder* And in my congressional district, my voting options were either the poster child for Nepotism, Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX), or bats#!t crazy violent overthrower Stephen Broden. Johnson won – yay?

That being said, I loved the orange Boehner balloons. And I was terribly saddened to see so many Better Known congressmen and women who are no longer serving in our Congress. Sad, sad day. As far as the props go, there were some crazy ones all over the country, and it was nice to see Stephen feature a few. I can sleep better at night knowing that baby curling is not allowed, although you have to admit, if it was, that would be the most adorable winter sport ever. Doris Kearns Goodwin brought it home at the end, bringing in a bit of sanity to the perspective of what happened with Truman after FDR. Here’s hoping that Obama can find the passion and strength again that he showed so well when he was running for office.

What did you think of last night’s episode? And have any of you caught up on your sleep yet from the rally weekend? Because I’m still not quite there yet myself.

Stephen Colbert - November 3, 2010

  • When a new mall opens, who do you give credit to, the correction crew who took two years to build it or the ex-football player who cuts the ribbon?
  • Now we’ll never find out what was in the Sharron Angle mystery policy box.
  • I’ll have these people frisked after the show.
  • You lost, stoners. Put that in your bong and don’t smoke it.
  • Under California’s current laws, it takes more energy to go vote than it does to get weed.
  • Now, supporters of the initiative said that the word “plantation” conjures up associations with slavery. Well, what is next? Getting rid of the word “island” because it remind people of the injustices suffered by Gilligan?
  • That’s why for thanksgiving vacation I am taking the whole family to Pangaea.

    I absolutely loved this episode!
firstly i love anything having to do with BKAD so the flashbacks were great (btw the last guy who was singing with stephen actually looks like john boehner) but it is sad that the colbert bump didnt work :(
i adored the interview- there were all these lines that she said that u could see stephen’s genuine interest in them (like the lincoln line)
it seems like every week there is a balloon fall- I know this sounds nerdy- but how cool would it be for an episode to have a balloon fall for every segment (i kid u not i was literally thinking during the episode how they could work out the logistics hehehe)
and btw i want that pill that stephens on- i could def use some artificial energy :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +4

    Eye candy! :)

Man he was so tired. Hope he got some good sleep last night! Loved the mystery box.

I feel your pain, DB. I live in John Boehner’s district. I wasn’t happy about how my state’s Senate or Gubenatorial races turned out either. *sigh* Fortunately, I have TCR and TDS to help me laugh away my disappointment and people like Doris Kearns Goodwin to help put things in perspective.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

Marvelous show! One of his best! Stephen & the writing were really top notch. And a big tip of the hat to the audience! Unbelievable energy, I could feel it sitting at home! Well done!
There was no one segment that really top the other, as they were all really strong. However, I really enjoyed Stephen’s take on CNN & there pundit overload. Particularly the line about the James Bond villain & James Carville as eye candy. :D And I had forgotten how terrific that John Hall duet was! Really great! (I hope against hope that last night’s segment wasn’t the de facto end of BKAD.)
Is it too much to hope for a Stephen-Elvis Costello duet tonight? *Fingers crossed*

  5. Nicolai says:

I liked it when Doris asked something like “What’s with the eyebrows?” And Stephen laughed like he wasn’t even trying to do anything, lol

“Looking at Carville reminds me I can’t wait for the Hobbit!”

When I grow up, I want to be Doris Kearns Goodwin. Always a top notch guest, and an all around cool lady!

I loved Stephen’s line about James Carville and The Hobbit! That whole bit about CNN’s election coverage was fantastic. Part of me wonders if there was a pre-show Q&A conversation last night about how utterly exhausted Stephen must be. He’s been in a chipper mood all week though, bless his heart. He’s such a trooper. :)

The interview was great! I was agreeing with just about everything Kearns Goodwin was saying, she was such a good guest to have on after the elections. The two of them seem to have a great rapport with each other, and you could tell how interested Stephen was in the conversation. Also, that shrug that Stephen gave after Kearns Goodwin said, “Hey, you do know history!” was adorable.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +4
