Huffington Post’s Sanity Bus price tag: $250K and counting

Well, we said before that Arianna Huffington’s offer to provide buses to the rallies was an incredibly generous gesture. Now that we’re seeing the cost of this offer, it’s even more staggering.

The Wrap has the story, and it looks like Arianna’s offer was as much of a surprise to her HuffPo cohorts as it was to delighted New Yorkers.

Arianna Huffington’s surprise gift to Jon Stewart — a convoy of shuttle buses to his “Rally to Restore Sanity” in Washington — was an even bigger surprise to the folks at the Huffington Post.

And the cost of the grand gesture — an estimated $250,000 for 100 buses for thousands of New Yorkers — is making some of Huffington Post’s finance executives wince, according to insiders.

. . .

Huffington confirmed to TheWrap that she made the sudden decision during her Sept. 28 visit to “The Daily Show.”

“Jon and I were talking in the green room about the rally. I said, ‘Oh my God, how are those people going to get there?’ On the air I decided to make that offer, it was spontaneous, and nobody knew. My people were in the green room with me, and even they had no clue.”

Very impressive. Even though I won’t need to take advantage of this convoy, my hat’s off to Ms. Huffington for making the offer. I’m sure the HuffPo contingent will be an impressive presence at the rallies.

Comments

  1. This article reaffirms my belief that the planners of this rally are grossly underestimating the final tally of attendees at this event. Heck, these buses alone are 1/6th the planned attendance of 60,000!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

    • Not to mention the fact that the marathon is the next day and expects attendance of 30k or so. I would imagine that a chunk of those people are going to at least check it out and see what’s happening.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  2. Well, as someone who IS relying on these buses to get to the rally, I really really hope they are going to happen and not get cancelled by her staff due to budget reasons! *GULP*

Anyhow, it was indeed a great offer from Ariana.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

Will sign-up deadline be Oct 15 as first mentioned? Seems it changed to Oct 8. I really want to join with my group on the bus and show some solidarity!!!
