For the Fangirls: Conan O’Brien vs Stephen Colbert

For those of you who don’t follow me on Twitter (and by the way, you totally should), you missed a very interesting exchange of tweets between myself and Team Coco fangirl and all around groovy chick, Joanna Nuval (aka @janeway529). It started with the new video promoting the new ‘Conan’ show, which features Conan O’Brien getting all kinds of naughty/hysterical with his desk and a bucket of sudsy water. After discussing the fangirly appeal of the video, we started talking about fangirling, and eventually asked the question: Who has the best videos that will turn fangirls stupid, Stephen Colbert or Conan O’Brien.

My first lob was the “When Doves Cry” segment of the American Treasure series and Stephen Colbert and Elvis Costello performing “Cheap Rewards”. I also threw in a character montage for good measure. Joanne and Team Coco came back with a Conan desktop striptease and Conan playing the drums. I countered with the fact that Stephen may not be able to play the drums, but boy can he dance (I also sent her the alternate version)! Team Coco came back with Conan belly dancing, and riding a mechanical bull. We countered with asking if Conan could sing in Korean. Team Coco challenged us to a Martha Stewart-off, and we met them with Martha and Stephen in the most adorkable Christmas sweater ever. After much more video linking and watching, and the fact that it was almost 11:30p EST and the Team Colbert fans actually had a show to watch, we decided to call a fangirl truce.

However, the next day, this wonderful chart comparing Stephen and Conan showed up on one of my fave new Colbert fan sites, the f**kyeahStephenColbert Tumblr, which made me laugh, and reminded me that adoring Stephen and Conan is not an either/or scenario. Enjoy!

For me, there is absolutely NO contest; it’s Stephen, Stephen, Stephen ALL the way!!!! I’m afraid I just don’t get the Conan being sexy thing at all; yes, he’s a great, funny guy, but just not my cup of tea, sexually!!!
Now, Stephen? Hell, where do I begin??!!! :-)
    Great comparisons tho’…kinda spooky! :-)

Conan is, historically, my 1st true late night crush, followed soon by Jon & of course, Stephen. I love them all equally though, & they are all pretty sexy in my eyes ;)

I love this comparison chart! Wow. Who knew they were so eerily alike? Did they both have a secretary named Lincoln? Ha

I really like Conan, although I haven’t watched him much. But Stephen? He is my true late-night love. Nay, obsession. :-)

      DITTO! My feelings exactly!

Been crushing even harder than usual this week :) *happy sigh*

Did Stephen really lose TDS to Jon? I didn’t even know he was up for the job?

Well Stephen had been on the show for a couple years before Kilborn left. But I was never clear on whether he was seriously considered as a possible replacement by Comedy Central and the Executive Producers, or if he just thought that he’d be the natural choice since he’d been with the show for a while. Or both. Just as well that he didn’t get it though. If he had, we wouldn’t have had Strangers With Candy or the Report. The horror…the horror…

      • Laura says:

Absolutely. Everything works out for a reason and I hope that he realizes it was a good thing that he didn’t get the show. He got his own show and even though he has to live in Jon’s shadow, it doesn’t seem like he minds that much.
He is so much better as the character Stephen anyway. When he guest hosted for Jon those few times, it seemed weird to see him just as himself.
I think Conan is good looking at times, but there is really no contest. Stephen!! I love Conan, but he would only be 2nd runner up, with Jon being first. Craig Ferguson would get Miss Congeniality.

The story I heard is that Stephen had applied for the job and that when he heard Jon got it decided to go to the Comedy Central official announcement as a reporter from the network. Once there, he raised his hand for a question and asked: “Does this mean I didn’t get the job?” Apparently, Jon turned to the Comedy Central president next to him and said:something like “I thought you told me he wasn’t funny!”

The last part should be verifiably true. Whether he asked for the job, I don’t know. I think it’s likely he’d have tried for it, but Jon genuinely was more well known at the time. I think in the end it worked out very well for them both. Stephen did find his political voice with the help of Jon. I wonder, though, if he’d have gotten it, what the show would have looked like? We have been able to see what some of Stephen’s less political humor looks like, and it’s still very clever and highly original. But I can’t imagine the world without “The Word.”

My g-f’s and I had a crush on Conan when he first came out with his show back in ’93, and he was then like the coolest, sexiest host on late night. But then again, there was not much competition for the title.
I personally always watched late night on new year’s eve because they had a central time zone countdown, so it became a tradition of sorts.
I would say in terms of Irishness, we must discern the types: black Irish versus carroty-Irish.

  7. Eris says:

Stephen really was the frontman for a Stones cover band in high school? I thought he made that up.

    • friedthing says:

Isn’t there some interview in which he talks about wearing his brother’s 00 jersey to perform with his band? He might have even said what it was called… don’t remember… what interview am I thinking of?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • DB says:

Stephen has said on multiple occasions that he tends to make some really crazy stuff up in his interviews. There’s one interview where he talks about his “big splurge” after getting the Daily Show getting some kind of muscle car, and then in another interview he totally admitted to making that up. So it’s entirely possible it could go either way.

I love that comparison! Who knew they had so much in common.

I didn’t really think of Conan as sexy until recently. Maybe it’s the beard? At any rate, that video of him washing the desk made me very, very stupid.

And holy crackers, I didn’t know Conan could play the drums like that. He’s good!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

    • GidgetAF says:

That beard turned Conan from “adorable” to “SEX on an f’ing STICK”. Oh, man… I love Stephen, too, but…wow. Just…wow.

  9. Gabby says:

I honestly love both these guys. I also love how much they have in common. But I’m sorry lately Conan has been looking REALLY GOOD. He is in incredible shape and that beard is amazing :) Don’t worry I love Stephen too but Conan is looking really HOT these days.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  10. Gratefull says:

Stephen’s shape is most definitely HOT! So HOT, they have to replace his Brooks Brothers suits every day ’cause they incinerate as soon as he puts them back on the hangers after the show. LOL

Also, Stephen is such a better string dancer than Conan even if Conan started it … Stephen’s moves at Conan’s concert were so fine while Conan looked a little like a frog leaping. I’ll give, their nose to nose shot was just too funny!

I will concede there is way more to Conan than his height and red hair but in my book, he has a long way to go before he can truly pluck the hem of Stephen’s gown, IMHO.

I’m sorry but Stephen better at The String Dance? You’ve got to be kidding me?

This is why the top photo on this link is the background on my laptop: http://assets.nydailynews.com/img/2010/06/03/alg_conan-obrien_stephen-colbert.jpg

When they’re both on my screen at once, I don’t have to choose! Their crossover “I made Huckabee” war with Jon Stewart is still the funniest thing to ever air on television, as far as I’m concerned. (And I’m so glad they did a follow up on Conan’s Legally Prohibited Tour.) I just wish Conan wasn’t on the same time slot as Colbert/Stewart now, because I was hoping for more Conan/Colbert Cwnage. (But I did love the little shout out Stephen gave Conan the other day on his show, “See ya in November, Buddy.” Awww! I promptly rewatched it six times in a row.)

  13. Camille says:

I’m pretty sure their dance off at the Legally Prohibited Tour blows anything they’ve done individually out of the water:

sorry but this is a bit crazy. I find both Conan O’Brien and Stephen Colbert incredibly funny and I love their shows or loved as the case may be, but both are more then DOUBLE my age. Finding either one of them sexy would be kind of creepy….(to me at least).
I can not wait until November 8 so I will be able to watch Conan on television and the Colbert Report (online)!!! : – D Oh and Conan does the string dance the best–he invented it.
