Spoiler Alert: ‘Night of Too Many Stars’ musical number

Stephen Colbert (L) and Steve Carell perform onstage at Comedy Central's Night Of Too Many Stars

This weekend, we featured a plethora of mysterious and funny pictures from the ‘Night of Too Many Stars’ charity event, featuring Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell and Jon Stewart in what looked to be an aviation-themed musical number.

Details have now emerged as to what exactly that musical number was all about, courtesy of the New York Daily News (links omitted):

Memo to the movie producers who just optioned Capt. Chesley (Sully) Sullenberger’s memoir: At the “Night of Too Many Stars: An Overbooked Concert for Autism Education” at the Beacon Theater on Saturday, comedians Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell put on a song-and-dance homage to the Hero of the Hudson that left us convinced that Sully’s life is “Rock of Ages!” with an emergency water landing.

Backed by a seriously swivel-hipped, white-mustache-wearing chorus line, Colbert and Carell donned captain’s hats and epaulets to sing, “Everybody’s Talking ‘Bout Sully,” probably the only song we’ve ever heard with the line, “Suck it, geese!”

Billed as a “zeit-heist” by Colbert, it was really a smart sendup of dated pop culture, replete with references to “Joe the Plumber,” “American Idol” contestant Sanjaya and an onstage cameo by Internet phenomenon Tay Zonday, who performed an excerpt of his weirdly hypnotic “Chocolate Rain.”

But it was Sullenberger who got star treatment in the song. Even the night’s emcee, Jon Stewart, got into the act when he joined Carell and Colbert for a little bit of “Make ‘Em Laugh”-style choreography that involved giving one’s mustache “a brush” from the “left to the right.”

Sully fans should be able to catch the segment when Comedy Central televises the benefit on Oct. 21.

Another fun spoiler that’s leaked about the special: Chris Rock apparently took bids to curse out someone over the phone. The winner – a lady named Desiree – bid $20,000 to have Chris Rock call her ex-boyfriend. Desiree’s ex, a fan of Chris Rock, had posted pictures of himself online with another lady after he and Desiree had been together over a year. Apparently the rant was expletive-laden and lasted over three minutes!

And a curse-filled rant from Chris Rock? What fun would that be. Good for Desiree for forking over the big charity bucks for that.

Wow, that looks awesome! I hope Sully felt honored by it. Oh, wow, a musical number by the TDS Trifectca. I can’t wait to see it, they’re always awesome together. And w00t, Stephen is rocking his outfit better, he looks in better shape than Steve! They both look so adorable in those hats.

It’s so nice of you to say what I was thinking: Stephen does look like he’s in better shape than Steve. That should make Stephen feel better about his child bearing hips. He seems really obsessed with them lately.
