Episode 6122 (9/27/2010) – Ken Burns

Colbert Report Episode guideEPISODE NUMBER: 6122 (September 27, 2010)
GUESTS: Ken Burns
SEGMENTS: Corn Packer Apology, The Delawert Report, The Word – Army of Mum, Yahweh or No Way – IHOP & Antonio Federici Ad
VIDEOS: Monday, September 27, 2010

Before we get started on the episode guide, I thought I’d share something from the ‘Daily Show’ last night that I found quite interesting. Jon Stewart gave his impression of the covering of Stephen Colbert’s testimony in Congress. While we knew Jon would be supportive of Stephen’s efforts, it was nice for him to do what he does best in situations like this, which is to point out the blatant hypocrisy of the reports in the news cycle. (Also, O’Reilly’s “drone” comment? Not cool.)

And now, onto the Episode Guide!

How adorkable was the Delawert Report? Stephen really looks different in a brown suit vs a black/navy/grey suit. Looks like he brought back the Sarah Palin glasses for the different look as well. My fave part, though, was the character breaks during the Dela-WORD.

I’m glad that Stephen keeps the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell issue in the spotlight. The thought of a gay man trying to fake enjoying the gift of pleated Dockers was terribly amusing, although not as amusing as the mental image of a dog dressed like an admiral.

Is anyone else craving Harvest Nut & Grain pancakes after that Yahweh segment? Just me then? Okay. While I’m not a big fan of baseball, I’m always amazed at how Ken Burns can make any subject he touches interesting. I enjoyed listening to Stephen and Ken’s discussion about the use of steroids in baseball and what it could mean to the long-term future of the sport.

What did all of you like about tonight’s show? And while we don’t normally open up the comments to ‘Daily Show’ talk, please feel free to comment on what you though of Jon’s coverage of the Congressional hearing story, and about the O’Reilly interview.

Delewert Report

  • I’d like to say I’m sorry to any gay Iowans who were offended when I used the term “corn packer”. No matter what the context, that was wrong. From now on I will use the politically correct term “manhusker”.
  • I am furious and indignant. I call it “infyurgnant”
  • It’s the same reason I don’t believe adults come from babies. I’ve stared at them for hours, and I’ve never seen one of them turn into a middle-aged man.
  • It’s a real blow to me because I wanted Christine O’Donnell to appear on the Report since the early last week.
  • Yes! We stopped the repeal. In your face, gays! But not in a gay way.
  • Unfortunately gay people aren’t gay just at gay pars and gay parades. Turns out they gay eat, they gay salute, they gay fire an M16. It’s like they got to gay everything up.
  • If a tree falls in the forest and there was no one around to see the elite force of secret attack beavers who took it down, there was no tree. [Secret Attack Beavers Now Playing On Cinemax]
  • I say we transfer all of our gay soldiers to these non-existent units. [The Raspberry Berets]
  • I can see why a church would want to name itself after IHOP, they’re both places Americans go on Sundays to get rid of that empty feeling inside.
  • And really, folks, what is pancake if not a huge, fluffy Eucharist?
  • Evidently the ice cream is so divine that it impregnated the nun.
  • On the other hand, if this ice cream is trying to stir up sales with the image of a pregnant nun, this could be the most sacrilegious frozen dessert since the 12 pack of Aposticles.
  • The Judas-icle looks like refreshing lemon but is actually banana. What a betrayal.
  • Are there Muslim baseball players? Is it appropriate to have Muslim players that close to America’s pastime?
  • I’m juicin’ right now.

  1. Ms Interpreted says:

I laughed so hard at the Aposticles — how ridiculous and delicious! :)

My heartiest guffaw came when Stephen referenced “Crimean War veteran John McCain”, though. I really couldn’t say why, just that I thought it was perfect.

Seriously excellent WØRD all around, very sharp and satirically brilliant. Much as I loved the DelaWØRD, the actual WØRD was my true fave. Well done, Colbert Report gang!

    Difference makers: Thumb up +5

  2. Mr. Arkadin says:

Can I just say Bill O’Reilly is an a$$hole. Thanks!

I loved TDR! I want to see a whole episode.
And the Word was superb! Your right DB, Stephen’s been great on DADT. Far better than the President IMHO.
As a huge jazz fan, I’ve never really forgiven Burns’ for making jazz seem so boring. But, he’s always been an excellent guest on TCR. And last night was no different. That said my favorite Burns’ appearance was his first one. The civil war parody about how future generation would read about the “epic” first meeting of Stephen and Ken Burns. Great stuff. :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +3

    • Karenatasha says:

Yup — the jazz issue and Burns. A friend of mine who’s a jazz expert got into a huge public row with Burns at a symposium! I wasn’t there to view it, but I heard it wasn’t pretty.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  3. Michele says:

“Crimean War veteran” killed me too! That was so funny! And I agree that the Word was especially good last night. Very well done!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  4. lockhart43 says:

This is what happens when you inappropriately insult Stephen: instead of spending time defending actions that do not need to be defended, he delivers a pitch-perfect show with hilarious jokes, cheer-worthy bullet points during a brilliant Word, and a great interview. Nicely done, sir. :)

I loved the Judas/Aposticle joke, but seeing Stephen crack up repeatedly during the Dela-Word was sincerely one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen on the show. My face hurt from laughing so hard. I’ve never seen him break like that during a cutaway bit, it was fantastic. And thanks for that adorable screencap DB! I won’t lie when I say it’s kinda nice to see the return of the Palin glasses.

And RE: O’Reilly’s drone comment – I appreciated Jon’s immediate and serious objection to it, and well as calling it a pinhead statement. Uncool, O’Reilly, uncool.

    Difference makers: Thumb up +15

  5. riftcanyondreams says:

I couldn’t keep a straight face during the Delawert Report, mostly because Stephen couldn’t :) That was just hilarious. I also second the comments about the Word, really enjoyed that too.

It’s also always nice to see Jon address Stephen, or vice versa. Good to see him point out the ignorant, hypocritical coverage of Stephen’s testimony.
As for the interview, Stewart – O’Reilly conversations are always a highlight for me, although at times painful to watch… Jon’s multiple facepalms on the Factor speak for themselves. Damn, I can’t stand O’Reilly… but Jon’s quick wit and reasonableness always make up for it.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +4

  6. friedthing says:

Haha, I’ve watched the Delawert Report at least 5 times now. It’s a cute look for him (they all are), and the person writing reeeeally slowly on the white board was so, so, so funny! I’m glad they kept the laughing version of it in, because they certainly didn’t have to! Oh, and the way Stephen flinched when the board slammed down next to him was hilarious :).

Loved the real Word as well… VERY sharp.

I think some talented soul out there needs to make Stephen an Aposticles popsicle-making set.

    Difference makers: Thumb up +8

  7. Aisha says:

I loved the Dela-WORD! I thought the different jacket was a nice touch, made it seem more like a local show with a lower budget. And the character breaks were adorable, as was the bit when he reminded the hand what it was supposed to be writing.

About the Judas-icle: am I the only one who thought he was going to say the flavour was… something else that is yellow?

TDS seemed a rather Colbert-centric ep, what with the coverage of the hearing and then Papa Bear. O’Reilly’s intro was GREAT. I thought Jon’s coverage of the hearing was awesome, parodying the over-the-top reactions of the media.

    Difference makers: Thumb up +5

    • riftcanyondreams says:

About the Judas-icle… I gotta admit I was expecting that too.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • Mr. Arkadin says:

“About the Judas-icle: am I the only one who thought he was going to say the flavour was… something else that is yellow?”
Yeah. The piss Judas. By Robert Mapplethorpe no doubt. ;)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  8. DrMeowMix says:

As a Delawarean (Delawertean?), I feel obligated to say that the Delawert Report set looked waaaay too big budget for the First State. Oh, if only…
I probably laughed just as hard at “Crimean War veteran John McCain” and the Aposticles, too.

I think Jon’s response to Stephen’s testimony was pitch perfect, and for Stephen to have done anything more than he did would have been easy fodder to turn into “he’s whining/a crybaby/etc” criticism from those already bashing him. Can someone get him down to testify on behalf of striking down DADT? That Wørd was amazing. Also, there’s just no way for that poo-tornado to become more embarrassing or a bigger mockery of American ideals.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +4

  9. MaryLovesColbert says:

I loved that Stephen couldn’t keep a straight face through the Delawert Report! That was so fun. :P

And I was really glad that Jon defended Stephen against all those naysayers on Fox. Some of those objections to Stephen testifying in Congress were just ridiculous!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +3

  10. mrtigger001 says:

As a newly minted Delawert resident, I enjoyed every minute of the Delaword.

And Ken Burns makes for a great guest too. He’s pretty good about not being sheepish around Stephen and also sets Stephen up pretty well for some good punchlines.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  11. Karenatasha says:

The Word (as usual), was brilliant, and like everyone else here, I am delighted that Colbert keeps the spotlight on DADT. One of the worst, most hypocritical acts of the Clinton administration, IMHO.

Loved, loved, loved the “Crimean War” comment. There was something
particularly tasty in Stephen’s almost casual use of that. Ditto for Dela-wert Report.

Re TDS: I was so happy Jon mounted such a passionate and well-crafted defense of Stephen. I’m sure Stephen was touched by the support. As for O’Reilly, well, we all know what he is, so being insulted by him can only be taken as a compliment.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +3

  12. Jen says:

Hey was that Paul Dinello writing on the white board during the Delawert Report? Haven’t had a chance to watch it again so I’m not too sure if I was imagining it.

Great episode! Kudos to Jon too for calling out O’Reilly on the drone comment.

    Difference makers: Thumb up +6

    • gentoo says:

Well maybe both of us are imagining it but I also thought it was Paul Dinello. Whoever it was, they did a great job giving us a wonderful character break.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

    • friedthing says:

Oh my gosh, it totally was!! Good catch! Makes it even better :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

    • lockhart43 says:

Yes! That is absolutely Paul Dinello. I didn’t catch it last night because I don’t have Comedy Central HD, so on my television you can only see his arms. Nice catch! That might partially explain why Stephen was laughing so much. :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • Jen says:

        ahhh awesome, I knew I wasn’t hallucinating!

I’m pretty sure there is a bit where you can see a bit of Paul’s face and he’s clearly cracking up :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • riftcanyondreams says:

        Awesome! I can’t believe I didn’t see that.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  13. Roseha says:

Thanks so much for including the Daily Show segment DB – Jon was brilliant in his takedown of the hypocritical reaction. And funny too.

My favorite part of TCR had to be the Delawert Report with the dry-erase board malfunctioning, and Stephen in that cute retro brown suit. I didn’t realize it was Paul! Hilarious now that I know that.

I loved Stephen’s line to Ken Burns above: “Is it appropriate to have Muslim players that close to America’s pastime?” Burns is good at going with the flow on TCR.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  14. Caoilfhiann says:

Stephen has more integrity in his wonky right ear than you’ll find in the entire congress AND Fox News. As for the drone remark, O’Reilly has made an enemy out of me (I was never a fan). I’m not saying that I’d do anything to hurt him, but he was trapped in a burning building with a Chia Pet, I’d save the Chia Pet.
The Word was my favorite part, but I found myself laughing out loud throughout the show.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +4

  15. Raven says:

Loved this episode and I also loved how they left it to Jon to cover the media reaction to Stephen’s testimony and let Stephen just get on with making a great show. Loved the Delawert Report, makes one wonder if that was the best take they could get and then if so, how badly was he cracking up in the other takes.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2
