Episode 6117 (9/16/2010) – Lawrence O’Donnell

Colbert Report Episode guideEPISODE NUMBER: 6117 (September 16, 2010)
GUESTS: Lawrence O’Donnell
SEGMENTS: Announcement of the March to Keep Fear Alive, ThreatDown
VIDEOS: Thursday, September 16, 2010

Okay, yes, there was a show last night, but is anyone really going to be talking about anything other than the RALLY?!?! After Jon Stewart made his Rally to Restore Sanity announcement, my e-mail, Twitter and IMs were buzzing about what was going to happen in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, October 30. So of course I had to stay up until the Colbert announcement was made.

And oh, what a great announcement – the Keep Fear Alive rally. The way Stephen teared up about Mo Rocca was beyond adorkable. (As was Stephen’s hair last night – sweet baby Jesus!) Loved Stephen’s reaction to Jon’s speech – “Reason is just one letter away from Treason.” Stephen gave such an amazing shoutout to the Restoring Truthiness crowd, between the mention of the goal of restoring Truthiness and the Lincoln Memorial speech. And then Jon walked in – you knew it was coming, and it rocked as hard as we all thought it would.

Now is the time for all good men to FREAK OUT FOR FREEDOM! Whoo! We are SO in!!

As Jon said, It is happening people! IT IS ON! WON’T BACK DOWN! So let’s talk about it! As for No Fact Zone, you know we’re going to be covering the ever living crap out of the rallies. But I want to hear what you guys have you say! Are you coming? Are you flying in/ driving? What kind of signs are you going to bring? Are you Team Sanity or Team Fear? (Also, if some wonderful graphics designer would like to e-mail me, I’ve got a GREAT idea for a t-shirt!)

Leave it in the comments! Also, if you’ve seen the rest of the show, please let me know how it went – I didn’t make it past the first segment this morning.

  1. Tish says:

Starting with the rest of the show, Stephen covered the bedbug story, and got an entomologist with the best accent evuh to quash the hysterics about the little bloodsuckers. The interview with Lawrence O’Donnell was quite fun, with some nice pokes at the Tea Partiers.

BUT, all that kinda fell by the wayside after the epicness of the opener, and the TDS announcement! They really pulled out the stops and both Jon and Stephen seemed to be enjoying themselves so much. Stephen as Abe Lincoln just about killed me dead. My brain’s stopped working now…

  2. L16 says:

An incredible episode, the announcement itself would be enough for most of us, so it has somewhat detracted from what was a solid episode all round.

I am super excited by the idea of Stephen and Jon (plus the rest of the Daily Show folk) getting together and spreading some fear and sense respectively.
The mini green screen announcement was hilarious and the arrival was Jon was just perfect.

Any episode with a ThreatDown is a winner for me so I really enjoyed that, plus I thought that Jerome Goddard came across well.
The interview was nice and Stephen’s hair was especially amazing.

    • Aisha says:

I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the hair for quite some time. Maybe they didn’t have time to fix it like it normally is? I hope they leave it like that more often.

      • gentoo says:

Oh yes, the hair was quite lovely last night. They definitely need to put less product in it more often.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

      • qxyzzy says:

Heh, the first thing I noticed was his hair to be honest.. It’s funny to check out the comments here and see that other people have the same thoughts :) Never ceases to amaze me.

Loved the episodes. So amazing. I really wish I could go…

      • friedthing says:

Wow, I almost always notice the hair, but for some reason I didn’t last night (of course I went back and looked, and it was indeed magnificent), but I DID notice his suit. It was dashing! And it was a very well-fitted lighter grey color, which only made me think he took Joan Rivers’ jabs to heart, haha ;). Awesomely handsome last night, but I was so focused on the Announcement that I forgot to stare!

  3. Aisha says:

Watching the Daily Show, as soon as that phone stated ringing I KNEW it would be Stephen. And I KNEW Jon was gonna turn up on the Report too. The whole thing was incredible and I may have actually hugged the TV.

I can’t believe they are actually making this happen. This is beyond awesome.

Anyone wanna help me pay for the trip from New Zealand? Please?

    • leorabk says:

while they are at it- if anyone wants to fly me out to dc from israel that would be awesome!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +4

    • gentoo says:

Well, my friend who lives in Auckland is flying to San Francisco on Monday – we could try to get you in her luggage. I’m meeting her out there then I can smuggle you in my luggage when I come home to DC. How about that? :-)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

    • jBirdNZ says:

Hey Aisha, fellow TCR friend & Kiwi, it really is a drag living so far away from all the action so I’m with you in being with the rally-ers in spirit! I’m sure we’ll get lots of great reports and pics.

      • juice says:

Wouldn’t it be cool if there would be live feeds from around the world? Oh, wait. That would be insane!

  4. lockhart43 says:

So I thought that repeatedly telling myself that I can’t go to this would work. And it absolutely has not worked at all. I want to go so bad! This is killing me right now…

*sigh* Anyway. Putting Stephen’s head on Abe Lincoln’s body was such a great idea, and a nice nod to the Restoring Truthiness gang. And giving him fangs and making his head spin around Exorcist-style was just hilarious. I would also just like to add to the comments about Stephen’s hair last night by saying: Oh my dear Lord did it look amazing! Could not stop staring at it, it looked un-freakin’-believable. Moving on.

I can’t believe this is really happening, it’s gonna be so awesome! :D

  5. leorabk says:

so exciting!! so many awesome things this year- Olympics, NASA, soldier shows, and now this!! but i gotta say i am a bit confused as to what its gonna be like- r both rallies gonna be at the same time or…?3w

the rest of the show felt very disconnected from the announce but it nonetheless rocked! especially jerome’s accent but especially especially stephen’s impression!!!!

on a side note i thought it would be a good idea to say sorry to stephen as it is the eve of Yom Kippur (Jewish judgement day) so i called in and i video the call- and im gonna put it on youtube so ill post the link soon- but it was awesome hearing the message machine.

still getting over the awesomeness of the announcement!

  6. Gratefull says:

What a GREAT episode. Liked the interviews with both guests including the break Stephen had over Dr. Goddard’s wonderful way with words and bedbug ideas.

Have to say, the can and string thing between J and S was just wonderfully silly and loved that they couldn’t get the “should it be at my ear or my mouth” straight … just too funny.

Sure wish I could go to the rally and particularly wish I could be counted but *sigh* chances are too remote. You EastCoasters are SO LUCKY!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +3

  7. Michele says:

I loved Dr. Goddard! Anyone who can make me laugh about bedbugs is ok in my book. The interview with O’Donnell was good too. But the announcements were the best! I really want to go but it’s short notice, I have too much going on, it’s a little too far a drive and airfare is stupid expensive, and there is no way in hell I’d risk missing Trick-or-Treating with my kids. I do hope at least one or two Zoners will make it and provide the rest of us with plenty of details.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  8. Mr. Arkadin says:

I loved the vampire Abe w/ the Linda Blair twist! I was almost sorry Jon showed up & stopped the bit! I could of watched that forever! :P
But to talk about bedbugs just before I went to bed! Not nice TCR! Every itch I got last night was followed by a flashlight check of my bed! :(
I didn’t really care one way or the other about this rally before. But right now it’s hard not too be excited! :) I really hope they broadcast this rally. Although, I fear TV won’t do it justice. You’ll probably have to be there to really appreciate it. Best wishes to all who get to go! :D

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • DBells says:

well considering he’s wanting to spread fear. Job well done XD
*p.s. I cringed like a little girl in that segment and averted my eyes, your not alone* **hugs**

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  9. Arkadina says:

Rally, schmally….the minute it started, I KNEW everyone would be talking just as much about The Hair, and that I would probably have been the only Zoner shouting “Hey, Colbert – where’s the gel gone?!” Far too bouncy!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +3

  10. friedthing says:

I also have to say that I think it’s awesome that they decided on a red picture for Jon and a blue picture for Stephen… it’s a good way to take the republican versus democrat aspect out of it and make sure it’s just rational people versus crazy people, regardless of party. Or something like that.

    Difference makers: Thumb up +7

  11. ElectreJane says:

Oh my God ! I so wish I could go ! I’ve never been more sad to live in France than I do now :(
But I can’t wait for you to report on the rally/march, DB ! I check No Fact Zone every single day and I really appreciate all your work :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  12. MaryLovesColbert says:

If I could go, I absolutely would. I know I can’t, so I’m just focusing all of my excitement on how AMAZING this whole thing is! :D I love when Jon and Stephen visit each other’s shows. Both The Daily Show & The Colbert Report were this huge rush of excitement and awesomeness. :D

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  13. pkyoubuggin says:

Well, I am about 3.5 hours away from DC , so it will be my main concern to get over there on the 30th. I hope the weather will be good! This is going to be a memorable day in Washington. It’s such a brilliant idea I am kind of surprised Jon and Stephen didn’t think of it before.
Also, this is kind of interesting, because no one was asking Jon for a rally-it was Stephen’s fans. I think this would be the first time Stephen was leading the way on a major event for the shows, not Jon.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

  14. jBirdNZ says:

    Wow to the hair!

Wow to the “Oh, friction!” line!

Mega WOW-HOLY-GENIUS! to the Lincoln-vampire -sheer brilliance! 10/30/10 cannot come soon enough…

My reCaptcha: seeeky present. I cannot figure the triple ‘e’ thing out at all.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  15. wren says:

Well, I’m a 13 hour train ride away, and with a 4 year old at home and work on Monday, there’s just no way. Which bites, especially because we have friends in DC we could stay with, too.

If I *were* going, I’d carry a sign with “Fear makes everything taste better” on one side, and “Chew your food thoroughly” on the other.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +3

  16. DBells says:

Hey DB! Send me your shirt idea, I’ll see what I can pop out :3
I can’t afford to go to the rally, but I’ll contribute to it!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  17. Roseha says:

What a wonderful show again! The rally should be awesome needless to say! I had no idea that Stephen had appeared during the Daily Show, so thanks DB for linking to the “phone can” visit. Both Stephen and Jon are having such a great time being over the top with this, and it should be a great event as well. Will it really be on C-SPAN?

Stephen is impressing with the acting even more lately isn’t he? First Strangelove, and then his evil Lincoln. I do think that his adorable hair look may have been deliberate to evoke Honest Abe a little more, Lincoln certainly didn’t have the product look.

And bedbugs! What a subject for a threat down….EWWWW. Heh.
But I did enjoy the bedbug expert.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  18. Caoilfhiann says:

For a few hours I seriously considered going to the rally. Imagine, Stephen and Jon in one venue! I could probably get Monday off from work, but the trip would cost me about $500 and I just don’t have it. :-(
As for Stephen’s hair, it fits his character better when it’s…what was Allison Silverman’s term for it? Heavily shellacked? But it do like it fluffy. I was really relieved when Gen. Odierno didn’t shave it again. lol

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  19. Karenatasha says:

Weighing in, finally, after Yom Kippur off the computer.

This was a great show–the announcement, the Lincoln, a Jon Stewart visit, and the fun interview.

Also the hair. The hair. The HAIR!!!! I wonder if he ran from Stewart’s studio back to his own–it was raining, and it might have washed out the product with no time to add more. I know it’s likely he’d have a car, but honestly, at the time they both tape, running is faster than a car in New York.

I definitely want to go, and have every intention of doing so. I just don’t know if I’ll stay overnight, because buses can get me there and back in the day. But that will depend on the timing, and when the actual rally is taking place.

Which Zoners are going (or considering it)? And from where?
