Restore Truthiness drive on Donors Choose reaches $101K mark in less than 24 hours

What an amazing outpouring of support from the Colbert Nation! The original goal of the Restore Truthiness movement was to raise $101,010 by Oct. 10, 2010. However, they reached their goal in less than 24 hours! As of this post, the Nation has raised $110,719, from 2,721 it-getters, helping 29,267 students. Way to go, Nation!

We received a letter earlier today from Anna Doherty of Donors Choose that I wanted to share with all of you.

My colleagues at and I saw [the No Fact Zone] post about the Reddit / Colbert Rally campaign and wanted to say THANK YOU for getting the word out to your readers! We’ve been so blown away by all the work of the Colbert Report community to bring life to classroom projects on our site.

By way of an update, did you see that the campaign has now raised nearly $105,000? We all woke up this morning to a very pleasant surprise J The group has helped more than 25,000 kids around the country!

Thanks again for including the blog post about yesterday and for your continued support.

You’re quite welcome, Anna! I’m so glad that the Restore Truthiness movement decided to use their power for good, and show their support for Stephen by raising money for Donors Choose. What an amazing way to call out to Stephen, by giving generously to one of his favorite charities. I had no idea that when the campaign started yesterday (?!) that the Colbert Nation would be able to reach the goal in less than 24 hours!

  1. Holy crap, Nation!! I take back every cynical thought I ever had about this thing :)

  2. We have to thank as well for it…they posted it on their front page and got a lot of people involved!

    • Absolutely – the Restore Truthiness movement includes the Reddit folks, the Facebook group, and the Colbert Rally site, as mentioned in NFZ’s original post about the event.

But most importantly, this is not about one group or one site. This is the Nation, pulling together to support one of Stephen’s favorite causes.

      • couldn’t agree more…even if the rally is not going to happen, this great outpouring of support has gone so much further than everybody expected and it helped so many teachers and students. I’m proud to be part of the Colbert Nation (and Jon Stewart’s nation as well)

  3. I’m so proud of you, Nation. :’) I’ve been following the Restoring Truthiness page all night, and the tally just goes up and up! I feel so happy to have been a part of all of this, and will definitely donate more when I can!

  4. I just have one word: AWESOME. :D

  5. In my head I hear Stephen from last week’s ep where the commodation was given…He looked in the camera and said, “…talking about You, Nation!”

    Way to go!!!

  6. Very, very cool news.

Also, nice poster. What did Pinocchio ever do to Colbert?

  7. Karenatasha says:

I am simply stunned into delighted silence. But all I can say is: thank heavens Stephen wants to use his popularity and Nation for good, not evil!

Has anyone ever seen the film “A Face in the Crowd?” I actually always thought it would be fun to have Stephen in a remake, because it’s about the negative flip side of using fame to manipulate a TV audience.

  8. Ms Interpreted says:

Very, very cool! We’ve known for quite some time that Stephen has some of the coolest fans around, but it’s still incredible to see such a measurable and awesome demonstration of their collective goodwill.

    Rock on, Nation!

  9. DogGoneGirl says:

Well, sure the facts speak for themselves AND YET, it just FEELS so good!

Good people, generous people giving to a good cause! So much more than a speech in a park with geese flying over head! S#%k it, Beck!

Truth be known, I wouldn’t have followed this had DB not posted it on NFZ. Thanks! DB!

    • I’m with you! Even if this rally doesn’t happen, the involvement and petition for one has done more than Glen Beck’s rally. What started as a silly joke, has turned into something much bigger and more important.

I don’t think I’ve ever been more proud to be a member of Colbert Nation, because, even though we’ve given a lot of money before, this is the first time we ever done so completely unprovoked. Rock on, Nation, rock on!

  10. This is amazing! Colbert Nation is the best nation ever!

  11. marleygirl84 says:

This just brightens up my day! I hope it’s making Stephen smile that big old adorable smile of his! I’ve been in awe over the power of Colbert Nation before, especially when we were asked to sponsor an Olympic team, but I think this tops them all just because, like Megan said, this was done without any word from Stephen himself. I think what I love most is that it makes something purposeful out of that stupid Glenn Beck rally in some way. I really do think Jon and Stephen are planning something, but even if they don’t……this has already turned into one amazing “yes, and”…. started, for once, by the nation themselves.

  12. Never underestimate the power of The Nation. Way to go, everyone! *cheers*

  14. This personal thank-you from Stephen on Reddit is pretty damn cool:

And the photo that went with it is pretty cute, too:

(Thanks to Anon for the post above – that’s how I found the links :P)
