Eye Candy: Stephen Colbert, astronaut-in-training

Hey Zoners, here’s a visual pick-me-up to help us get past our disappointment with the Emmys. The good people at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston have posted some behind-the-scenes photos from Stephen’s visit there in May for his astronaut training. The sight of Stephen in his orange jumpsuit makes me smile every time, because I know how much fun this was for him. I especially love the pics of him trying out his namesake treadmill!

You can view the whole collection of photos (more than fifty of them!) at the JSC’s web site. And if you want to relive the awesomeness of Stephen’s astronaut training, the videos for “Fallback Position: Astronaut” are here: part 1, part 2, and part 3.

A big thank you to NASA and the JSC folks for sharing the photos with everyone!

  1. I gotta be honest – I have no idea how you narrowed this down to three. I just keep looking at the pictures and just adoring them all. Gah, can’t even finish the comment, losing IQ points as we speak!

    • Example of stupid, you say? I counted your number of pics as three. I rest my case.

      • “…losing IQ points as we speak!”

Mwahahaha… My plan is working! *snerk*

Actually, if you looked at the post while I was still working on it, it only had three pics to start with. I added the fourth at the last minute.

  2. Also? Pumpkin patch!

  3. Those pictures are great! So many–I’m sure they could have extended the segment on the show! What do they do with all that extra footage? I wish they would put it on DVD for fans to buy and donate the proceeds to science :)…or another worthy cause.

I wonder if he got to keep the orange jumpsuit?! I don’t know what it is, but he looks so different when his glasses are off. Don’t know why–he wears frameless lenses so it shouldn’t be so different. Maybe my eyes are tired from all the pics?!?

  4. How great does he look in that jumpsuit? What a handsome devil.

  5. I love it when he does field pieces! He somehow looks younger! Looking forward to the Take Our Jobs segment(s), those would be brilliant for sure.

  6. Thank you Ann G!

Ya know, not many men can pull off wearing an orange jumpsuit. Heck, not many *people* can for that matter. But, our favorite, most dashing pundit sure can.

    This one’s my favorite: http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/jscfeatures/photos/Colbert2010/jsc2010e086540.jpg

*sigh* It’s that smile that gets me.

(PS–And it just occurred to me that I haven’t seen these videos yet. This is a definite problem that must be remedied as soon as I get home from work.)

    • That’s my favorite too! It looks like he’s having such a great time. For as crazy hard as Stephen and the staff work on the show, it’s times like this that it must seem like the greatest job on the planet.

Fantastic pictures! I don’t know how he does it, but he makes that orange jumpsuit look phenomenal! I love the picture of him with his treadmill – he looks so proud. :D

Thank you so much for these! I really love that first picture – they captured the smile he gets when he’s laughing. :)

  9. Oh my -Stephen, orange jumpsuit, big happy grin = pure joy.

Thank you Ann G -this has made my day!

I love them all, but especially the ones where he’s behind the controls in the simulator–it seems so wish fulfillment-y to me.
